I always say that to really appreciate Undertale for what it is - a satire of JRPG tropes - you need to have played a decent amount of them. The target audience for the game was the people who grew up with those RPGs and would have the jokes right in their face, as well as the "wow" factor of the ending of their first run hitting them during the judgment hall segment.However, the game ended up making a massive splash among the younger crowd due to its popularity through mediums like Tumblr, where they loved things like the colorful dynamic cast of characters instead and the AUs created of them. Or the "deepest hidden lore" with stuff like Gaster. Their focus was on an entirely different aspect, which caused the fandom to skew in an entirely different direction, leaving millennials who grew up raised on stuff like Earthbound in the minority.Not meaning any of that in a gatekeeping or judgmental way, mind you, but purely observational and something that I find so interesting. There was nothing more jarring than going to an Undertale photoshoot at a con when it first exploded in popularity back in late 2015/early 2016, and seeing mostly tweens and teens there, and only a few other adults.

Perusing the selection of attire in the monster section of the local thrift store in hopes of finding some "dirty clothes" Asgore can use for gardening while occasionally pulling some random article to get his opinion, and upon finally finding a t-shirt of his exact size I excitedly remove it to find the words "I'm A T-Rexcellent Dad!" that makes us both wonder whether the original owner no longer felt worthy of the tittle or if they were simply promoted (we did end up getting the dino shirt among other things, as it paired nicely with his "G.O.A.T. Goat!" sweater)
