Finished Silver Jiken. Honestly, I have no idea how to do this VN justice in this writeup. It's so unlike anything I've read before, and there are so many things I could talk about... but if there's one thing I can drill into your head today, let it be this: Everyone read Silver Jiken now!!! If you have any interest, any at all, in crime fiction, or sci-fi, or surreal/mind screw stories, give the VN a chance!!! You might love it!!! It starts out pretty slow, admittedly... The Transmitter chapters have you help solve several mysteries as a detective (most of the plot is concentrated here), and Placebo provides clarity for the finer details of the case. The issue with this is that the earlier Transmitter chapters are more about setting up the characters and narrative than they are the mystery, so their corresponding Placebo chapter can feel redundant. Watching Tokio's reactions as the plot develops is still interesting, so I wouldn't call early Placebo completely worthless, but if you're strictly interested in the mystery you might feel bored. Transmitter is comparatively far more interesting from the very beginning, and has a great cast of characters. I came to love them all, especially Sumio and Kusabi.Things get a lot better after Placebo chapter 2, though! Every moment of dullness in the first four chapters is more than recuperated in the latter half of Silver Jiken. Parade was my favorite mystery-wise. It was really fun trying to decipher everything and make a coherent plotline. Kamuidrome has a lot of interesting themes regarding the birth of the internet, social alienation, and cult behavior. Lifecut is one insane plot twist after another. The truth about Kamui, his pretenders, the Shelter Kids policy, Tokyo's factionalism... it's cathartic to see the whole rotten system collapse in on itself. Placebo also grows a lot more independent from Transmitter as Tokio gets more and more involved in his own investigation, to its benefit.

I will say that the gameplay got old very quickly... It's tedious, especially in Placebo. The game will have you knock on every single door in an apartment complex or explore 10 identical buildings to discover clues. I understand they did this to show that detective work isn't always glamorous, but it bored the hell out of me. The lack of a backlog or text skipping was inconvenient, as was only being able to save the game during gameplay sections. There were also a couple minor questions I was hoping to see answered that weren't, but I think that just goes with Suda's writing style. So oh well. Overall, though, it's a superb VN, and one I couldn't possibly do justice with this stupid writeup. So go read it!!!
