Low-skill and low-vision retards come here with the delusion that "it's just video games. how hard can it be?", but in reality, game development is one of the absolute hardest things you can be doing with your life. Eventually, they put in so much time and effort and accumulate so much sunk cost that they simply cannot admit to themselves and others that they will never be good enough to make a good game, and instead, they will spend the rest of their short, miserable lives haunting this thread, blaming everyone but themselves for their own shortcomings.

Unity but with ECS, so most builtin things you'd expect to work don't. I considered designating "pack leaders" and having them do all the queries on a navmesh, and having a much simpler AI for their followers, but having a really good pathfinding solution that works natively in ECS systems code would open up some gameplay options.

maybe use a flow based(vectorfield) pathfinding system
you generate 1 flow map, towards a single target, and all the units can use it at once(with extra logic to avoid overlapping eachother). Planetary Anhelation uses it, and they also have to worry about generating it from procgen geometry
though, you may be able to get away with something else idk
>>
>>557980281
that would actually be a cool design for a monster in a horror game. NPCs you know being effectively rolled over repeatedly approaching you while they look happy, glad to see you, or whatever else. Just a big blob of people rolling at you. Shouldn't be that hard to mock up with some random off the shelf NPC generator like unreal has, either.
>>
>>557981761
Problem with these is that when you move the target you have to do a big dynamic update, and the player moves a lot and quickly in my game, so keeping it current isn't simple. Most flow fields I've seen either work on really small grids or just assume the target will be static.
>>
>>557982270
thanks ideasguy
>>
>>557982680
afaik it would still be faster to generate a new flow field every second than a standard pathfinding for 1000s of units
>>
>>557983019
Well that's not really the alternative, the alternative is doing something like this with a quadtree, which is what I think existing (expensive) assets do.

what exactly do you need the exact path every frame for?
surely you can delegate tiers of precision where the ones further away only update every n frames, then the next layer half that time and so on
>>
>>557982680
I think that idea you had about multiple simpler AI following an "Actor" makes sense.
Maybe make it so that each unit can function as an actor when the "Actor" dies?
>>
>>557991526
That's the kind of thing you can do when you're not using flow fields. For them, the queries aren't the expensive part (they're basically free so doing them every frame is no problem,) but rewriting the field every time the player moves is very expensive.
>>
>>557969098
What if you do not intend to make money and just want to make something that's worth playing?
>>
>>557991710
I'm not the anon who suggested vector fields, and you can still delegate them by only creating a partial vector field of to different hotspots and then have the unit pathfind towards said spots then follow the field if you don't mind them grouping together, that still depends on whatever are you trying to make

>>
I've never implemented it, but dijkstras should work pretty well for that case, right? For one, it computes all the shortest paths to/from a point, so you'd do it from the player until you've pathed to all the enemies. For another, it's based on caching "the shortest path from a to b is x" for every pair a and b. Even if the player moves, you can keep the cache and potentially reuse most of it.

90%+ of the retards who post here will never release a playable video game, so you'd be in good company. Starting with and actually shipping Pong automatically puts you in the top 10%.

Discipline means to be regimental and hard on yourself. It takes a lot of hard work to git gud at anything, and it takes even more hard work to actually make the things you want to make after you learn the necessary skills. You need to be prepared to put in the hours. In fact, if you really wanted to make video games, you should've been putting tens of thousands of hours into learning applicable skills since you were in your early teens.

Billionaires pits everyone making 100k a year to 10k a year

Honestly just having a job puts you above 80% of the population

You have aspirations to do, skill to get you by, money for independence, and time for hobbies

The fuck those unemployed retards do on the daily? Scroll goon and bicker on social media daily. Can't even enjoy a proper hobby and becoming constant disappointment to their parents.

Their parents are in their 40s 50s still making minimum wage and they themselves will never be able to reach their parents level.

If you have a job right now and use your entire free time doing jackshit that doesnt improve your identity like studying more, learning a language, doing hobby projects that accentuates the degree + education that you went through, connecting with other hardworking / talented people around you or above you and only mingle with what the unemployed retards do like scrolling, gooning, bickering on socials maybe you havent learned your lesson yet. Maybe you should just go back being unemployed.

I've given this advice many times in this thread: solo indie gamedev is one of the absolute hardest things you can be doing with your life, but getting a specialized job at a game studio is way easier, and is something attainable by most people. If you really wanted to work on good video games that you can be proud of, that is by far the easiest route.

Took me a bit to figure out, but I finally have an enemy who actually fights you and stuff. While I don't show this, his moveset is fully customizable as well via the inspector, including shockwave attacks and ranged ones.
The lack of animation makes it look like nothing is happening, but the enemy is really throwing some stuff at you.
Now imagine there being at least 5 of him going at you all at once.

Yet another progress-free pastrypost incoming.
I went to a proper bakery and got these mini croissants, half with raspberry, the other half with something like Nutella.
Worked a full 5 hours yesterday but made very little progress. I was fiddling with transparencies and gradients on something that doesn't matter, like at all. For today I have prepared a list of tasks and low standards for what's acceptable.
I remember years ago I was making some content for my previous game and I added something that was meant to be temporary and it was marked as temporary and it's been on my list to redo, but no one ever complained so I got away with spending two days on something that would have otherwise taken me two, three weeks. That's the mindset I need to rediscover.

If i rent a place closer to my job, i can effectively cut commute to just 15 minutes x 2 per day. I can pursue my digital art hobbies as much as 2 hours on weekdays. But i will literally have ZERO budget for entertainment/hangouts/savings.

If i dont rent a place closer to my job, i can use the money to buy the shit i always wanted when i was younger, upgrade my wardrobe, buy dakimakuras and shit, but i can only just go home to sleep, sketch a bit on my sketchbook, then only able to draw digitally on weekends.

For me, it's seeing some of my favorite games not doing certain things that would just make the gameplay experience so much better.

Those don't look like croissants at all. They look like doughy hotdog buns, a croissant should be flaky. I'm assuming you're in the UK because you eat like shit and consider slabs of garbage to be a delicate treat. If you're going to continue to live like this, you need to stop putting whatever the fuck is clouding up your drink because that will be what takes you over the edge. Having a sugar habit like this is legitimately stupid, there is no gain from eating sugar garbage and even the supposed uplifting effect is negated by the later draining effects of this shite nutrition and the hormonal problems this lifestyle grants you. If you want to be motivated to work in a chair like a fat faggot the best course of action is to do some vigorous exercise, after you've had a moment to rest you'll feel significantly more energized and it also helps offset the undeniably unhealthy hobbies spent sitting in front of a computer.
But you are an antagonizing faggot ritual blog poster, so your feminine & rotted brain will not accept this and you will eat more to retaliate against anons for trying to help you. Fuck you.

Thanks for making this post.
It made me realize that among those without talent, wealth or connections, the only ones who are going to make it are those who have the grit to do uncomfortable things for long periods of time. So I immediately closed the browser and worked some more on my game.

Your post was very relatable, I was having the same thoughts, when it just hit me that this is the line that separates people who make it from people who are never gonna make it. To succeed I need to become a better person than I was until now, better than you are right now. I'm sorry anon, but the reason you have to fail is so that I can make it. Life NEEDS to be so difficult and uncomfortable so I can have a chance at success despite having no talent, because there's only so many winning prizes to go around.

I have a buddy who doesn't like competition, he feels genuinely guilty about winning, because the other person has to lose.
You can't be like that. Some will succeed, others will fail. That's just how it goes. All you can do is anything in your power to steer your life to your desired outcome.
And for most of us, that means working on your damn game no matter what

I can already tell you that "it definitely would" but "they're not gonna like it". Unlike normal gambling games, you can spin the roulette here for free (up to an amount). No matter how much you say that the rates are fucked and the gem packs are too expensive, the addicts will just say "uhm bro it's a f2p game just don't play it? I've been playing for free since release just fine!" (ignore that they spent hundreds of hours just to keep up with the lowest currency spender).
Since spending money is optional it's difficult to regulate it. And if you tried, you'd have to go through battlepasses and lootboxes first, you can't kill just one head of the hydra. But good luck I guess.
>>
>>558038678
>(ignore that they spent hundreds of hours just to keep up with the lowest currency spender)

>>
>>558036524
Good luck bro, all the people I know who are addicted to gacha are like crack addicts who insist it is harmless
Meanwhile they're obsessing over a game that is trying to monopolize either your time or your money, you get to pick which way you get fucked at least.
You wanna waste hours grinding out free in-game currency or do you want to empty your bank account? Pick your poison, faggot!
There is a complete and total lack of respect on the behalf of the developers of those games toward their playerbase. They don't respect your time, or your money.
I think gacha players enjoy being degraded, they love getting shit on. The same type of people who are paypigging for streamers and e-grils.
They're fucking idiots that get taken advantage of. And they LOVE IT. They cannot get enough of it.

Upfront may get you more hate initially but it's safer because hiding it runs the risk of mass refunds after people find out even for players that are past the 2hr mark.
Refunds fuck you because you loose more money than you initially made from the purchase due to processing fees.
Safer to only sell only to slop enjoyers because they won't be a ticking time bomb.

Making your dream game as first project
>make a thorough design document
>organize it into general tasts that occupy all the game (eg HUD, physics, combat system) and individual applications of it (discrete levels and plot)
>the former is very frontloaded but it's mostly an once-and-done task when finished and makes the latter pretty smooth sailing
>DON'T SCOPE CREEP IN THE MIDDLE OF DEV BECAUSE IT THREATENS THE WHOLE STRUCTURE
>>
I don't want to implement collide and slide AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
>>
I feel sick as hell
>>
>>558045871
that's basically what I did
a lot of time dedicated to building a frame I could fill with content
>>
>>558045871
The problem with this plan is that you fumbled horribly at the first step because you're asking a zero-skill nodev to do thorough design work. Design is the hardest part and requires the most experience. Imagine if you walked into a game studio and you found the least experienced developers doing design work and the most experienced developers doing implementation grunt work.

no better way to learn than by doing it, or at least trying to do it until you can
your dream game may end up poorly designed and shit, but you can learn a lot from a "failed" project
Do it for the experience
>>

too many game engines
none of them good or useful
this applies both to engines you use and engines you make yourself
>>
>>558046369
That's is why the leading recommendation from experienced developers to new developers is to make small games, not dream games. It's so that you can fail fast instead of wasting years or even decades on absolute garbage.
>>
>>558046550
I get it, but people are still going to chase their dream game no matter how much sensible advice you give them
I would recommend anyone stuck on their dream game to do some game jams for low commitment side games

While it's not my first project; most of them never left the proto tech build, this current small idea is expanding to a bigger concept. Been planning out a story, structure, the likes. You'll all get to watch it crash and burn in real time if I don't keep fueling the dev fire.

How would you recommend I learn game design?
Art and coding are relatively straightforward and I've been getting better the more I do them. Designing an engaging and good game seems to be the real thing that separates successful games from failures.
I guess it's also something you'd learn by doing, hence the "make many small games" advice. But how would you teach even the fundamentals of game design? At least the other skills have fundamentals you can learn to start you off right before practice.
>>
>>558047952
Just make original animations with music and post them on youtube instead, way more money, less design demand, and it's actually something we need more of (in good quality and not some gay furry shit)
>>
>>558047952
Game design is more a matter of pacing and understanding how it all fits together.
You need to evaluate each system as part of a greater whole
>>
>>558047952
first you must play 1000 games
>>
>>558047952
Game design is another entire 4-year degree. Here's a short primer: https://www.raphkoster.com/2025/11/03/game-design-is-simple-actually/
>>
>>558047952
Game design is basically, the higher level articulation that you throw to the peons who actually implement it (this is not true)

Can you successfully explain your mechanic in a way that makes sense why it's being implemented that way, can you outline the entire game from start to finish, can you tell somebody why the level works the way it works (roller coaster analogies are very common)

Whether that's the high level organization (there's a talk from the designer of MLB The Show on PS3 and his design documents are stuff like for example, outlining the entire game's UX in flowcharts)

This is why ideaguys are not game designers, they have an idea but can not actually explain it from end to end

you guys ungerstand that it is possible to make bite-sized portions of your dream game right?

Like, say you finish the combat for a 3D RPG.
And then you make a bite-sized Adventure game out of that combat slice.

The Customer eats the bite sized game, like a small piece of chocolate. While you're still making the big meal game. It's like an appetizer.
>>
>>558048372
Going all out will make it kino
>>
>>558048372
Except when I go to a restaurant, I don't want my appetizer and main dish to be the same thing.
Imagine buying an appetizer tray of mozzarella sticks then ordering a big plate of lasagna.
>>
>>558048372
Honestly my biggest hurdle is my inability to animate or model anything.
>>
>>558048372
you're talking to guys who dream about making a game but aren't making shit.
>>
>>558048372
>>558048673
The way programming languages and game engines insist, largely needlessly, on making threading/game loops/engine ticks all work with as much unintuitive ass backwards boilerplate as possible is so fucking unbearable. It's actually WORSE coding for new systems than for 2010 systems. We've somehow gone backwards. I want to die.

I sould just port to Godot and make it full 3d

Play games
If you’ve been playing games since you’re a kid it should be obvious what works in a game and what doesn’t
Colleges don’t teach this and it’s why every “gamedev” with a degree is shitty, they’d be better off playing games for 4 years straight
