I really cannot vibe with this game's combat.As a game designer with decades of experiece with all types of action combat from Ocarina of Times to Zenless to Dark Souls I don't mind any particular speed or pace of any type of action combat.The problems with Endfield are the utter lack of precision, consistency, responsiveness and sometimes even agency built into the combat sanbox.All aggravated by the camera.- Enemy attack telegraph are inconsistent and inaccurate, both in terms of timing and hitbox.- Enemy attack animations have wildly variating larger hitboxes compared to the actual models movement arcs.- Dodge timing are inconsistent and not having any cooldown or grace period makes it feel even worse, spam dodging is cheap, precise dodging is in not that precise.- Attack chain animations reset VERY inconsistently after dodging and with no sensory feedback whatsoever.- There is no free aiming because the game ALWAYS soft-locks you onto a specific enemy and this soft-locking is also extremely inconsistent and it's not soft enough, you need to dodge away, turn the camera and input a new direction to switch targets.- The manual target-locking completely shuts down camera control making it a lose-lose choice to hard-lock or not.- There is a baseline egregious animation frontloading that feels like input-lag and just exacerbates all of the above.- The combat sandbox comes down to a locked rotation decided by the team composition and paced by basic attack chains. It allows for very little improvization and reactive gameplay but at the same time is severly obstructed by enemy attacks and phases.It feels like being skilled at this game comes down to just coping with all the combat system problems and playing around them.I originally thought this game was the future of gatcha but I've come to the realization that the combat content is more of a chore than doing deliveries and rare nodes collections.
