Whether or not Bungie can win them back with Marathon is a huge ask, since it's unclear if the game will have enough staying power and content to keep people engaged for more than a month or two.

>>558169308Think about it for a second. Bungie's first hit IP came with both a standard length campaign mode that you could play with your friends and it offered 4 difficulties. These came with easter eggs and later skulls to spice up your campaign runs even a bit further. With each game these features were improved in some way. Halo 3 got forge, theater mode, file share and a better ranking system, better clan features, more fun sandbox additions like the splaser and trip mines. Halo Reach massively improved forge and had the REQ system where the long term progression of your cosmetic unlocks was a core multiplayer feature. It admittedly did some things that upset many halo fans yet pleased others, but overall it was a decent halo game. Their second hit IP came with a "story" that was more like a couple halo missions dragged out between a bunch of intercom dialogue and basically missed everything about freytag's pyramid when they made the "story". The "multiplayer" content varies from a shorter even more watered down version of a halo mission, to three longer halo missions with some encounters that might require some thinking power, and a watered down version of team slayer but without the sandbox features that made halo multiplayer fun, like vehicles and sticky nades that make them go flying, interactable assets on a map like opening a big gate that changes the dynamic of the combat flow, and with only half of the max lobby size of their previous IP, which means you'll never get anything like BTB or multi-team. Their third IP that won't be a hit, is just one mode. All those years of development and they were only able to muster up one mode.
