Thanks for the responses. I'm not really sure how much "faster" I can make it without it being uncontrollable. I was thinking about maybe making the arena start out surrounded by a destructible glass wall that you need to slam your opponent into repeatedly before you can go for a knockout victory. That way the players can zoom around a bit more without being at risk of immediately rolling themselves out. I will certainly be making it far more juicy in terms of more VFX with lots of hitstop abilities like picrel.

Yesterday I worked a bit extra on my game and reduced the time I owe it to 14 hours and 10 minutes. I posted I was going to do it, so I did, even if I didn't feel like working. Thanks for being my accountability buddies. Today I'm going to reduce my work debt some more.
My goal at the moment is to get the game presentable and playable in 4 months. It's still missing some major systems and has no content, so it's completely unrealistic but I want to see how close can I get. I used to be a lot faster on my earlier games.

Over 2 months since I started the prototype -_- I was literally only supposed to take 7 days but then iirc I ramped it up to 10 days and then 14 days. Probably rising production standards on my part and the increased awareness of what corners I was cutting. I try to cut the same corners and not worry about things I was worrying when I lacked experience, but I just can't let some things slide. That 1 frame mismatch between the sprite and the physical body didn't bother me before but now I'll spend an hour or two figuring out why it happens. Or if I get a crash, production stops until I figure out what caused it and how to fix it. And back then I used to have variables like enginePower and engineDamageLevel while now I have a VehicleComponent class and a VehicleComponentDefinition class and every vehicle has its own list of components with its own characteristics. Does it make the game more fun? No, but I can't go back to the previous way of doing things.

But low poly is not that dificult if you have proper ortho references.

Calculators are still useful and makes you more efficient, you're not better because you can do math without a calculator you only need to understand how where and why to apply the formula. In that sense experimenting with AI has actually improved my art because I can see something that's very close to my style drawn properly and easily spot the mistakes I've made. This sounds like bullshit but is very true btw. A few years ago I was so desperate for art assets that I wanted to try AI art. Couldn't afford to pay anyone and figured I could never learn how to draw. Eventually, I did learn how to draw, and I'm glad I did because I learned a lot in the process. Before, I wasn't really aware of things like making sure different figures in the scene should share colors that complement each other, or how to make sure different assets were in perspective compared to one another, or how distant objects should fade in vividity and detail to avoid visual noise. Had I generated the assets and put them together, sure, they could be nice individually, but the composite would lack something.

This is also, by the way, why games made with store-bought artist-produced assets typically look bad. Many of the assets are just fine! But, they were made out of context, and the person using them typically doesn't understand how they should put them together. For instance, if you have an image meant to be readable at a distance, it shouldn't have a ton of internal detail that fades to nothing.

You really want to work with an artist who understands the vision, or better yet, become that artist yourself

Sadly, yes, which is pretty ironic. If your goal is just to save time and you don't care about the sovl factor or whatever, I bet an artist with a solid understanding of all of this could quickly generate an asset and spend an hour reworking it instead of spending four drawing it. In the FBX export do an export with just the Mesh and Armature but uncheck Animation, that's your model
Then select just Armature, check Animation, then export, thats your animation (might be Other+Animation not Armature+Animation but try arm+anim first)
You should be able to open these both in unity/godot and see the mesh+armature without animations, then assign the animations from the animation export back to the mesh+armature in-engine

Western gamers do not want to see anime girls in screenshots or capsule images unless it's a coom game. Any western gamers who do want anime girls in their games are already well catered for by jap games, and gatcha games which are coom-adjacent.

It happens in agdg a lot because there are far more vocal weebs here than on the wider Internet and those weebs will pile (You)s on any progress that features an anime girl. Also, autistic people are drawn to characters with heavy color coding elements, such as sonic, mlp, or anime girls with pink hair. The colors help them relate to and clearly identify the characters.

agdg devs think they're creative but they have a very specific niche tastes that are not commercially viable. They'll make a hardcore military simulator type game and because the dev watched girls und panzer at some point he will inevitably spoil it and alienate 95% of the game's prospective customer base by putting some fucking gay-ass anime girl front and center.
