TL:DR at the bottom! I apologize if my language comes off the wrong way, I'm still developing the mental knowledge to talk about mechanical stuff in a thoughtful way. Feel free to ask me about any points if they're confusing, I'm still learning this game. While I'm not a GS one trick, it is my favourite weapon, and this comes from the lens of somebody who has soloed basically every challenge(not scaled for 4 people) in modern MH solo with the Greatsword, apart from the risen EDs in Rise since my MR is only like 115 there.On paper, this thing is ridiculous. Perfect blocks that allow you to really easily defend and animation cancel into outright guards, the weapon's main skill floor being rendered obsolete with focus mode, a super good wound break and an offset that can counter a lot of moves. GS is a Swiss army knife in this game, and it's way lighter to use than previous games due to how easy everything is is comparison, although I think maybe the line people draw about HOW easier is a bit thinner than given credit for(easy retreat + easy counter into ridiculous damage TCS that's even on roars in Rise, basically free, easily aimed TCS from 1 uncharged swing follow up in World, ect...), but looking at the 10* ATs, I'm not sure that it's actually keeping up as easily as most of the others.(1/3)

Using AT Arkveld as an example, they wanted to make it a challenge, and given how much offensive AND defensive tools they gave the weapons, the really only way to make it challenging without completely rewiring Arkveld's identity was to make it absolutely ferocious in pace and damage. Arkveld will NOT stop attacking, and with my other weapons(CB, Gunlance, Switch Axe, Longsword), it feels amazing. I DO still actually like the fight on GS, but because of how aggressive it is, charging slashes is really, really hard. A single charge from draw, sure, but positioning in a way to utilize charged slashes and initiate combos is nonexistent; he attacks too fast to follow up on for 80% of his moves, locks onto you with lunges really easily, uses dragging moves that either knock you back far blocked or get him out of harm's way long enough to start another attack if dodged, and is somehow as agile as a Rise monster. There are guaranteed spots for big punishes, of course, such as the free wounds on lunge chain slams and the nova, but they're exploited just as easily by other weapons while they're able to keep up consistent damage on the guy. There is a way, however, to keep up on Greatsword decently enough, and that's to EXCLUSIVELY attack with offset attacks as to give you a way of being safe, as tackle is redundant since he has a grab attack he can chain to. The thing is though, he attacks SO regularly, spamming offsets actually works wonders! If he's always attacking, you can always counter and just punish him. Plus, with slam follow ups, you can get very easy wide slash followups for basically free, too.(2/4)
Another example, AT Nu Udra. I won't mention the AoE damage because that's countered by adept, cool preparation mechanic. Nu's biggest thing in the fight is that he can attack everywhere; his tentacles are all danger points. While attacks from the tentacle slaps don't interrupt you outright while charging, they DO do hefty chip damage, and with a weapon like the GS where staying in a smart location to charge up before striking is the plan, having everywhere be dangerous is just fundamentally hard. You can wait for the slaps to be done, of course, but either you're going to be hit with a biiiig tentacle slap, which is basically your only window for slashes, or the bane of a GS' existence, the oil attack. For a weapon that has to stay still, an attack which makes the monster reposition and deliver an unlockable, enormous explosion that will leave behind napalm and burn you to death is a horror show. The best way to deal with this monster? What a surprise, use offsets more than slashes. If you offset the slaps, they don't deal damage, and you get a follow up. Also, offsets are EXTREMELY low commitment attacks, being able to execute the counter within a moment of charge, so you can dodge the explosions way easier.(3/4)

There are smaller examples, like Jinn Dahaad being able to flush out areas and other weapons escaping way easier than GS, but the point I'm trying to make is that GS has a lot of challenges for not a lot of get back compared to other weapons. Longsword can just counter every single one of Arkveld's extremely fast moves while just playing normally and keep up damage tenfold. Guard weapons like Lance can slot in guard up and ANNIHILATE Arkveld's challenge without even having much experience in the weapon. Dual Blades can press the reposition button to avoid Nu Udra's checkmates, and then keep going apeshit like nothing happened. Greatsword has to really work for what it needs, and even then, I feel as if the only real ways for it to keep up with the the other weapons is to forsake its identity and use its main attack as a treat rather than the main attack of the weapon. I'm not the biggest fan of the future of Greatsword in Wilds being reliant entirely on offsets to keep up with extreme aggression, and I hope that it doesn't. I suppose I just want to inspire conversation about it. What do you think?TL:DR - Greatsword in endgame Wilds is reliant entirely on offsets, and has to work a lot harder to be comparable in damage to what the other weapons do easier. I feel as if the unique personality of the weapon has waned a bit in favour of offset and perfect guard cancel, and I fear it may struggle to keep up in the expansion.(4/4)

Was kind of expecting a worse time playing with support hunters compared to playing solo because of the increased HP with multiplayer scaling.Granted I'm not that great at fighting AT Arkveld aggressively yet since I keep triple carting to it unless I play more defensively, but I managed to do it in 18 minutes with support hunters compared to my usual time around 20+ minute playing solo.Hopefully the challenge quest version next month is more lenient with the S rank time requirement compared to previous challenge quests.

There's a Tempered Odogaron event quest that also gives R8 Artian parts if that's what you're after. Steer clear of tempered Lagi or Seregios if you're not confident, they are way harder than others on the same star levelA good progression set without fighting any ATs is Lagi/Zoh/Gore/Lagi/Gore. Imo you can use this set all the way until you get a good gogmartian so I think it's fine to upgrade it. AT gears are obviously better but it's hard to farm them solo with bad gear.

You can recognize the start of the roar animation and block pre-emptively or if you have no shield just roll the roar or roll to a spot farther from the monster to buy yourself some time before they run into you after a roar so you can potentially dodge. This obviously means you can't be mashing nonstop. Anyway in general roars are way more lenient in third gen than in previous games. It's really a non issue unless you're getting hit constantly and not healing
