But nuMarathon feels like a game with an identity crisis, it has character abilities and ultimates and advanced movement, but it simultaneously has cooldown and overheating mechanics resulting in a slower pace than even CoD DMZ or MWIII zombies. It wants you to take a tactical approach like Ready or Not or Rainbow Six but at the same time enemies don't really function by these rules. And even compared to more "hardcore" games like Hunt, it does something it didn't by having Seasonal Resets, meaning that all items earned during the end of the season are nuked from everyone's inventory. It not only is jarring if you came off of Destiny 2, but that also makes this a weird game that doesn't appeal to casuals or the hardcore crowd. Marathon feels like a game custom made just to waste the player's time in the name of "engagement" than it is a fun game that has monetization embeded in it to keep the company in business.

I played an alpha and didn't think I'd like it but this game is actually pretty good for a solo schizoid player. We will see as I'm still in the honeymoon phase with the art direction I actually like it and bungie is good at atmosphere. If the game doesn't tank I might buy it but I know the actual best stuff in the game will be impossible for me to see because I don't have the time nor friends to do raid-like endgame esoteric stuff. That's assuming they even are creative enough to do vault of glass like stuff in this type of game. I wish the game had a PvE campaign simply because I know Bungie could do it well. They have been masters of great FPS campaigns in the past. There were glimpses of that in Destiny as well. They could still do it. Bungie making an extraction shooter is like Mozart making a writing a commercial jingle for Ozempic. It’s beneath them. Like I've played Let it Die Inferno which is a mostly panned Souls-like/Extraction hybrid, and even then I've never had as many issues with other players like I did in this game. I was still able to emote or at least ignore other players far more in that vs Marathon where its a KOS fest even with proximity chat apparently being in the game. Unless you have good shields then whoever gets the drop first basically wins where the other player has basically no way to fight back, which is annoying in a game all about completing bounties and extracting. The other problem is that the bots feel like they belong to a different game in terms of combat, since they're not only bullet spongey with varying shield HP but they also have a dash ability to get up close alongside shield wielding variants, basically serving as more difficult reskins of the Cabal from D2. In theory it would be great if this meant that the game just wants you to take your time and tactically deal with them, but you barely have any ammo for your guns on the field, the enemy can spot you from a mile away like D2, and your only other weapon besides abilities/ults is a puny fucking CS knife. At least in Hunt Showdown you had far more options like a lantern you could use to light enemies on fire alongside molotovs, alongside other more powerful melee weapons to not resort to gunfire.

It's weird, at first I did not like it. I felt it threw me in the middle of nowhere and I had no sense of direction. I couldn't find people, the AI destroyed me game after game, couldn't find gear, etc. I just felt lost.So i took a step back and actually paid attention to what the game was trying to show me. After doing quests, paying attention to the factions, the lore, upgrading my guns, adding new gear to my vault, completing contacts I'm having the most fun I've ever had in an extraction shooter, even more then arc raiders. Thank you bungie!

This is how an extraction shooter is supposed to feel. IMO marathon is great. You can tell a lotta people played arc and thought that’s just how these games work. Arc is EXTREMELY generous with loot and crafting supplies and there are no real stakes. Respecfully, IMO.

Social Media has ruined the past day of the playtest for me and I’m going to continue playing this game in a bubble. I am loving this game so far. It’s so refreshing to be learning a new game from scratch, this is all that’s been on my mind for the past day. The I go onto YouTube or god forbid twitter, it’s a cesspool. I will be playing this in a bubble for the rest of the playtest. No more looking at discourse online, no watching videos or anything related to this game. No streams, no tweets, nothing. Doesn’t matter if it’s positive or negative, I am sick of the doom and gloom and I just wanna have fun, . I’ll probably just stickto this sub to find out useful information sometimes. I suggested the same to a friend and will suggest the same to everyone who wants to just enjoy the game.

I think it's wild that the shields get upgraded and you can get a double bag on Rook ontop of guaranteed enhanced weapons
