The first day of the fifth game of the 75th Osho title match is being played, between Takuya Nagase (sente) and Sota Fujii (the Osho title holder). The time control is 8 hours per player over two days, and the match is a best of 7 (Nagase leads 3-1).
The opening was double static rook, with Fujii playing the Murata System opening (which iirc he's only played once before) instead of his usual gote openings (bishop exchange, or more rarely gangi).

When did you realize chess really is 99% tactics? I can't believe I used to waste so much time on openings and endgames when all I had to do was spam puzzles to improve.
>>
>>559685314
Case in point: some boomer in my chess group who started around the same time I did is obsessed with openings and never does any tactics. At club night he opened with the Sicilian, so I played 2. a3 and 3. h3 just to troll him and ended up annihilating him tactically. The game ended with a discovered attack on his queen. It's kinda crazy how fast you improve compared to openingcels when all you do is spam puzzles.
>>
>>559652224

>>559652541
all his terminology and history is correct. Not sure you'd get all that right just from translating the links.
>>
>>559685314
this, but also basic endings are needed. Bonus: helps your analysis skills since you really need to read deep to get a lot of endings right.

When teaching kids, I don't bother with specific openings, but hammer the opening principles: develop all the pieces (minor out front, major from the rear), control the center, keep king safe.

All you need for a middle game plan is to keep your own pieces protected, take free pieces, and get in the habit of always asking "what's the threat?" Everything else is tactics.
>>
>>559685314
>>559686114
>>559688280
A lot of it is tactics and that's the best way to improve, but you need more than that, even at bad level.
Else you'll end up stuck defending all your pieces that were attacked and get a passive position with no tactics to play.

Is there a way to use an engine to review lines in a position without seeing the eval?
I've started using Stockfish in 15+10 to double check lines and ideas of mine. Only after I've made a move, of course, and never in the endgames. The real-time feedback is very helpful. One downside however is that I always know the evaluation of the position which is unfair to my opponent.
>>
>>559760273
thats fucking retarded even if you could hide the eval, having stockfish tell you what the best line is should give you a good enough idea of the eval regardless
>>
>>559760493
>having stockfish tell you what the best line is should
It depends. Tactical lines, yes. But even if you see the engine line, it's not always obvious what the eval is, especially if the position is closed.

There was some faggot GM who makes clickbait videos about these stupid "rules" making chess seem so easy, and they're simply wrong. I tried following them and I lost a million points OTB lol. I got tricked by that bitch.
>to take is a mistake
Actually not true AT ALL. It should be the opposite. Capturing retains the initiative as long as the opponent can't recapture with tempo. But I am 100 points lower now so he got me, well played.
>>
>>559797865
Those rules are targeted at people below 1000 that can't hold all of steinitz elements in their head at one time, it stops them from taking every possible even trade they encounter they aren't meant for people that know how to play chess.
>>
>>559793442
This dude is living documented proof that starting chess as a kid is basically a requirement if you want to become a titled player. Sure, exceptions exist, and a few insane outliers might even reach CM or FM with tons of talent and years of hard work, but improooving as an adult all the way to a title is clearly a meme for the vast majority of people.
>>
>>559798049
>tfw I was over twice that
>>
>>559798153
Samefagging, but I just checked his FIDE profile, and he's below 2000 now. Jesus Christ.
>>
>>559798153
True but improving from a kid to a titled player is well out of reach for the vast majority of players too. There's no guarantee he would be titled if he had started at 7 years old. The vast majority don't reach any title.
>>
>>559798817
Definitely agree, but I was more so trying to make the point that even if he had the potential to become a titled player as a kid, I don't think he'd ever reach it now simply because he started trying to improve at chess so late in life. I used to think the whole thing about kids improving much faster and having higher ceilings was a myth, but then I joined an OTB club and saw it right in front of me. The speed at which these kids improve compared to us fully grown adults is fucking scary man. Their brains are like damn sponges.

>>
One thing I think is really related to starting chess early is performance in puzzle storm. If you start early you get a bunch of neural networks built in for it when your brain is most plastic. Then you can just use those to easily and quickly recognize patterns.
While the people who started late don't have such connections so they have to rely on brain software instead of hardwire which takes much longer.
So you could have someone who's a worse chess player but performs much better in puzzle storm and related time-based things (like bullet) for that reason.

I have 1 example that contradicts your 1 example, it seems its not as clear as we thought

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Soltis

>Soltis learned how the chess pieces moved at age 10 when he came upon a how-to-play book in the public library in Astoria, Queens where he grew up. He took no further interest in the game until he was 14, when he joined an Astoria chess club, then the Marshall Chess Club and competed in his first tournament, the 1961 New York City Junior Championship.
(learned at 10 started really playing at 14)
...

>His first-place finishes in New York international tournaments in 1977 and 1980 resulted in his being awarded the International Grandmaster title in 1980 (which is commonly referred to as "Grandmaster").
(GM at 23)

I suppose that still counts as a kid but usually people mean rigorous training from toddler age not taking up a cool game as a teenager.
>>
>>559808176
I don't think people mean rigorous training from a toddler age.. Even very few GMs have that.

I would think the cut off for becoming a good chess player is when a person reaches a point where they have problems that aren't solved by other people.

Chess is really fun and I would love it if I could study real hard all day every day, but I have 100 things more important to do, so it rarely happens that I do more than fuck around for an hour to unwind.

Where as when I was a kid I would play cs:go for 90 hrs a week and hit GE.

If I got into shooters as an adult, I would never, ever, in 30 more years get GE.
I have bills, work, I gotta make dinner, clean the house, spend time with my cat, hit the grocery store, get my car fixed, I have appointments, meetings, retreats to go to, and I still gotta freak hoes.

There's not 90hrs in the week to be wasting on a game anymore...

Before you even factor brain plasticity which also impedes progress

I hate it so much when I am doing puzzle rush and when I try to play another run, I somehow get into the normal puzzle mode so I play a move instantly and instead of being rated 1100 it's rated 2800 and I lose points on my puzzle rating.
>>
>>559809186
Huh. Well I suppose I may have been taking the Polgar route and applying it to other GMs. But at the very least starting as a small kid and being coached from then on
>>
>>559813228
This is something I've thought about, I sometimes play puzzle streak and know the answer but feel like it's more complicated while knowing everyone just plays their instinct at lower puzzle ratings, but if that's the case then what's the point of those puzzles? Puzzles where you simply use your intuition to "find" a tactic in ignorance of concrete calculation? In what situation of a chess game is that useful, besides time trouble where your performance during probably won't even be improved by these puzzles because you dont learn from them because you're not even truly trying to, and where if at all your play is changed it will be for the worse a la the problem you just brought up in which puzzle rush thinking is applied to more complex positions?
>>
>>559811449
No, the point is he doesn’t care anymore, and that’s how he overcame his mental barrier.
>>
>>559818546
Solving those puzzles doesn't help, and puzzle storm in particular doesn't help either I think, except maybe for keeping calm and thinking under time pressure.
If you want to improve you should do real puzzles instead.

The second day of the fifth game of the O-sho title match, in which six-time champion Sota Fujii (23) would lose his title if he lost, has begun.

The O-sho title match is a seven-game series in which Fujii, who is aiming for his fifth consecutive championship, is being challenged by 9-dan player Takuya Nagase (33) for the second consecutive year. Fujii, who had a record of 1 win and 3 losses, was in a "kadoban" position in Game 5, which began on the 8th in Otawara City, Tochigi Prefecture. On the 9th, Nagase's sealed 47th move was opened and the match resumed.

Both the O-sho and Ki-o titles are in kadoban positions.

Nagase, who has been winning consecutive games since the third game, is in checkmate and will be aiming to use this momentum to win his first O-sho title. This will be the seventh time the two have faced off in a title match, with Fujii having won every previous one. The Kiō Championship, which is being held at the same time, is also in the kadoban stage. With the possibility of losing both titles, attention is focused on whether Fujii, the six-crown champion, can keep his hopes of defending his title. The fifth game is expected to be decided on the evening of the 9th.

What is up with lichess puzzles? I don't understand how they work. They say as puzzle theme "mix of everything" and yet I just got 3 puzzles in a row where both sides have Q+B+R, and sometimes I have a string of all endgame puzzles. You may say it's all randomness and maybe it is, but come on, am I right?

Another common issue with lower rated players:
When caluclating they go too many moves down the lines too quickly. They have a depth-first search process. To them even if they miss something, the fact that they were 7 moves down the line is some consolation... no, shouldn't be.
You should instead have a breath-first search. If you go down 7 moves and miss a refutation on move 1, then you've calculated less than one move ahead. There is no consolation.

Finally, after thousands of games, I got a smothered mate. Can't believe it. It happened against a bird subhuman too. Won't post the game because it came from a complete bullshit sacrifice but it still feels good.
>>
>>560017764
Post the final position/combination?
>>
>>560015015
Um I used to watch hasan a lot, but after all the tariffs, immigration stuff, marginalization of trans people, war shit, interest rates, etc+etc... politics gives me anxiety and so I just watch cats and fan theories about TV shows.

>>560015062
>>560016473
Yeah I'm anti-anti-semitic, but I also don't talk about that because in my state most of the hoes are chud or chudlite.
>>
>>560020892
Hasan is too smart for his own good. You know you’re right when you’re pissing off people from both parties.
>>
>>560021193
It's more that I'm sensitive and the steady flow of strictly bad news was having bad impacts on my mental health.
I have employees that are hispanic, patients that are trans, friends around the globe and so it all feels very real when the people affected by bad changes are part of my daily life :c

I think hasan is woke and hot even though he hates gay people and women of color...

Never heard of elephant graveyard before. I’ll definitely check out some of his top vids. As for Hasan, I don’t know the context, but just from the thumbnails, it’s pretty obvious EG doesn’t like Joe.

I think that was established with Hasan good. I was just hoping you'd be more ambitious than the status quo for a fan of his and at least learn to spell.

I made a common mistake in my second language that even EFL make sometimes, meanwhile you have worse reading comprehension than the average 10yo in your mother tongue , I wonder what's worse

Thanks for sharing the voice clip. Have you considered recording yourself during games and making videos? I don’t speak for everyone here, but I’d definitely be interested in following your progress. What should we call you btw? Do you have a dark origin story?

Not seriously, it would be akward talking to my phone for an entire chess game.
It's hard to think of a name on the spot, anon works for now, and no :x
>>560047157
I'm pretty bad at endgames, most of my games don't make it to the endgame and I've hardly cracked the silman book, it's a part of my game I want to start looking more into. I recently learned the philidor position

No way, Jose. And his Nimzo looks pretty professional though I dont play it
>>
>>560058741
Unfortunately someone itt cooked me several times including my nimzo...
That was a good game for me, I often want to switch to the KID but don't
>>
>>560059861
Is nimzo working out for you? It has a lot of different variations and sometimes you have to play bogo.
>>
>>560059690
Not interested move on.
>>
>>560059861
KID is fun and you can play it like a system which makes it more beginner friendly.
>>
>>560061419
Why (You) me then to crybaby mode when I reply? You're not the brightest are you?
>>
>>560060984
The bogo doesn't work out for me, and the QID didn't go much better last time I tried it, although I was much worse at tactics then.
I usually just play 3...d5 vs 3.nf3 and I don't really have any long term plans beyond principles and calculation...
>>
>>560062618
No thanks troll.
>>560062838
I tried picking up nimzo but there’s so much stuff to remember. Definitely more complicated than caveman pawnstorms.
