Marathon is a very boring game to stream when you're just running around killing NPCs and getting loot. When the burnt peanut was playing marathon, when he was engaging in firefights, people really liked to watch it. It's when he started to just kill NPCs and gather loot, people thought it was really boring. Tim the tatman also has this issue too when he streams Marathon.

The increase in the range on gunfire sound allows streamers to engage in more frequent firefights with other players making for a much more entertaining stream.

On runner kills, I always see the random teammates running up to bags and immediately loot everything. Even mid pvp.

Coming from other extraction shooters, it’s usually if you get the knock/kill then you should get first dibs. This game has a bunch of goblins for sure.

The game is simply too punishing, it's not "hard", Deadlock is a game I would consider hard, Deadlock has a lot of depth to it and it will take dozens upon dozens of hours to get a mechanical feel for playing it and processing all the information it has (map objectives, items, hero abilities, etc).

Marathon on the other hand you can pick up quick, there isn't a lot of info to swallow but the slightest mistakes will result in you instantly dying, which for a game like this is just very conductive to having a playerbase, it's literally designed, intentionally or not, to burn people out except for the rattiest of rats.

Deadlock actually rewards you for taking the time to learn it, Marathon simply doesn't.

This is probably the worst part about the game. If PvE was actually good then it could take a lot of the strain off of PvP, but the PvE fucking sucks ass.
In Arc Raiders the PvE enemies are fun to fight, can be challenging and also worth fighting. In Marathon the PvE enemys are super boring to fight, just bullet sponges and also never worth fighting unless you're doing a quest where you're forced to.

You haven't played Deadlock, although denial is part of the game, you get currency from creeps without even touching them as long as they die around you, giving you a lot of breathing room to engage with players during the laning phase more than most MOBAs. Deadlock's TTK varies wildly but it can be very, very quick, some characters can do half your health even by the 3 minute mark with a single ability. My point is Deadlock is a genuinely hardcore game but can still keep a large player base because it knows the difference between being hard and being punishing. Marathon is simply punishing.

It's definitely a big draw but if that was solely the case you would see a big decline in the player base over time but it's pretty consistent and growing in the long run. It's kind of the other side of the coin, a huge draw of Marathon is the art but once people actually dive into the game they drop it before long.

in marathon you just play cautiously and most of the time you will not get ganked, let's be fucking real most people are not making absolutely zero noise for extended periods in this game. even if your team sucks shit you can peel off and try to escape and if enemies are really dogged in chasing you ttk is low enough to where you can fight back if you play smart.

deadlock's "this is a MOBA, not a shooter" ttk means that upsets in a teamfight are borderline impossible and if your team sucks that badly the match is often decided long before you actually have a fight
this isn't to say that deadlock is bad but I've seen infinitely more serious "I need to be talked down from the ledge" crashouts over deadlock. part of that is that it is a game that is incredibly fun when you're winning, moreso than marathon- I honestly think a bigger part of that is the art repeatedly luring people in.
