You're supposed to do contracts to level up your factions, and collect materials and credits for permanent upgrades. The rank up rewards exist so you can have a steady supply of decent gear as you go along. It does assume you're going to survive a few rounds now and again. However, with extremely bad luck, you can still run free kits or do rook runs to get your bank back up. Pick an upgrade you think you'll want and feels impactful, say, the ability to purchase green meds, backpacks, and green shields. Focus on one of those and exclusively go in trying to make progress on that upgrade. PvP isn't the focus unless you want it to be, but you will have to sometimes take a fight especially if you're filling trios and not running solo or rook. The loop is basically get shit, get in to get more shit, get that shit out, so you can get a better baseline quality of shit to bring in. It's a gear treadmill where there's risk in losing the gear. That's the fun.

Many mid/long range fights involve swapping targets real often as people pop up in different places, despite what people say about muh ttk. My trio firefights at this point in certain areas feel like Halo 3 battles with everyone shielded up with alll these attachments and power weapons. Then again this is 40 hours in, and there’s still more, but it’s a big ask for most players.

Some games don’t need to be more than 7 minutes. You’ll start reaching this curve in the game where you’re more comfortable with gear and the losses won’t feel detrimental.
