I would say that game tried its hardest to imply that Osborne and Rean really are kindred spirits, but that Osborne went astray by having no friends to rely on and thus he commits atrocities, in full control of himself not because of Ishmelga, in order to bring about the curse and find a way to destroy it. If he really was like Rean, his abrasiveness and pride in 3rd and Azure, despite how much I enjoy them, make little sense. Rean would never act like that, so why would Osborne do that? To maintain an image of quasi-tyrannical pride that makes him throw his weight around? In front of Alicia it’d make sense, but in front of the SSS? Why? What does he care how some cops, regardless of their newfound glory, perceive him?I can’t help but feel the writing is conflicting.

But to be a good boss, to be a made man, you need a certain level of kookiness. Tony Soprano, Henry Hill, Jimmy Conway, the Corleones…you need to be either a sociopath or a psychopath to do “what must be done” and carry on with your life feeling little to no remorse about it. Now of course it is not lost on me that these guys are self-serving assholes and Osborne does what he does for the greater good and resigns himself to going down as a man of questionable morality and ethics at best, but I just have to think doing all that bad stuff had to have gnawed at him mentally. Or that he had to be kooky to do it well. I thought what we learned of the Mad King of the past would rear its head again. Am I too off the mark? Sometimes it feels like I am expecting too much of an anime game to go that deep in a character’s psyche and explore if he is a psychopath, but then again, every arc in this series poses or explores questions I would not really associate with anime JRPGs, so…Sorry, had to get the thoughts outta my system.
