I think the reason why most UTDR characters have their issues often tied to real life disorders and have their problems and actions taken seriously, despite the fact the narrative doesn't seem to dwell on these things too hard, is because they're too relatable to mainstream audiences. They reflect exaggerated characteristics that the audience perceives as similar to their own problems, which leads to those issues being treated with the same amount of respect and seriousness that they themselves wish they got. It's good that this happens, it means the characters are written well enough to have people not only care about them, but also have them reflect themselves on them, which means they achieve the purpose of serving the audience.
