Friendly reminder that the "make small games" advice doesn't mean to make shorter games (aka worse games). It means to make more focused games where you can spend your extremely limited time as a solodev polishing fewer mechanics to higher standards rather than spreading yourself too thin and loading your game full of shitty, under-polished, and ultimately pointless features. When Steam gamers think of "short" games, they're thinking about games with 3-15 hours of playtime.

Um bros?

>>560813916
I'm estimating about 3 to 4 hours per chapter. Yeah, I wanna do it in chapters because it lets me pace myself over time better while consistently releasing stuff and thus meaning I can make more stuff with the systems I've created.

I don't think a discrete number of mechanics is a good way to think about it. I think of the components of a game as "activities", which are each composed of numerous layered mechanics. For example, in a roguelike, you can simplify your entire game down to just one "action" scene and one "upgrade" scene. The action scene can be active-combat like Hades or Gungeon, a bullet heaven autoshooter like VS or Brotato, a tower defense like TangyTD or Wireworks, or even a simple stat sheet autobattler like Backpack Battles or The Bazaar. Then there's the "upgrade" scene, which can range from simple choose-from-three like VS or Hades to Backpack Battle's inventory Tetris to Wireworks'... well, wireworks.

>>560814253
That's not long enough for Steam. At least bundle 50 arcade games together or something.

>>
>>560815062
Generic action adventure RPGs aren't nearly as tight, and so these "activities" tend to blend into each other, but if you have narrative dialogue, then usually that should definitely be considered one of the main activities. I'd categorize many RPGs as movie games aka "visual novels with extra steps", where the narrative delivery IS the main activity.
>>
>>560815252
No narrative dialogue options or RPG mechanics beyond a few "Status effects."

• Understood. The constraint is process fan-out, not GPU load. I’ll keep live runs serialized and avoid multi-instance
explosion, but I won’t avoid single heavy runs when they are actually needed.

>>
>>560815951
Combat will always be repetitive if the mechanics don't change. New mechanics are typically introduced alongside character growth, and character growth is typically represented by a stats sheet.
>>
>>560816120
What kind of RPGs are you playing where it actually introduces new mechanics?

Literally any good RPG will be constantly introducing new mechanics, or they're just flooded with so many mechanics that don't require for you to immediately engage with and you can pick and choose at your own leisure.

>>560816418
Small itch/web games are fine. Just don't expect for it to make any money on Steam.
>>
>>560816579

I don't, though I will make more than my unpublished big game that I can't seem to get over the finish-line. I swear I'll get that one done too... this small one will teach me how(hope/cope)
>>
>>560816748
Do they make any significant gameplay impact? i.e. Does the introduction of a new move change the player's decision making in any way?
>>
>>560816854
In a good game? Yeah. Look at something like, IDK, the Izuna Drop in Ninja Gaiden for example.
NG is far more complicated than I could hope to do, but that fundamental idea of moves doing tangibly different things remains

been trying to procedural generate a mesh using the mesh data of other meshes to basically create one giant mesh.
it works fine, but it has terrible performance cuz it renders a trillion faces inside of itself, and ive been trying to figure out some way to make it not do this but all i could find was stuff relating to voxel games where every mesh in the procedural mesh is just a cube which doesnt really apply to what im doing since checking for the sides of a cube is giga-easy compared to this.

>hurr just ask isrealgpt
already did, isrealgpt has no clue how to do this either and only suggested i do voxel game stuff where everything is a cube or things involving physics checks (which would also be giga-slow)

anyone have any ideas for how i can cull all the faces in the mesh? im out of ideas.

That'd be nice. I'm using the new Paper Rpg maker. But I'll be writing a lot of custom script myself. I'm trynna make something with a Pokémon feel to it and got the core game mechanic that makes it unique planned out but I need to think of an art style. I was thinking early Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest type games rather than Pokémon clone 847476. I could go into more detail if you're interested.

this post last night made me really fucking angry
because disgusting gamercunt subhumanoids don't find games themselves and need e-celebs/youtube algorithm to spoonfeed games to them, devs have to work a THIRD job as a social media content creator just to get their games known at all
so because nundev had to basically spent half of his dev time posting tiktoks just to get his game noticed (he spoke of this on /agdg/ himself), he obviously had EVEN LESS time to make something that isn't just generic waifubait slop

and yet this fat disgusting subhuman slob sits there, risking nothing and doing nothing all day, complaining about a problem it itself created

A reminder that submissions are open and will remain open until May 23rd. As previously mentioned, we are planning on doing two developer spotlights but we will be deciding on the second spotlight about mid-April. One is already selected. If you are interested, you may sign up without a trailer and it'll be up to the production team to determine who gets the second spotlight.

Signing up without a trailer does not guarantee you a spot in the show. Only a trailer does.

some people make what they find fun and want to play. others make what they played and end up being a horrible copy of a good game.
copying a game you liked can literally never result in a new game that you want to play but doesn't exist.
i think most devs aren't motivated by "i really want this to exist", cause they don't have an idea like that. they just want to make a game and publish something on steam and out of lack of ideas they copy stuff that already exists.

nah
the gambling often happens when you have a game idea
when you have an idea for a game you'll often immediately know whether it's successful or not if you're smart enough
freak accidents can happen however
>>
>>560840151
the point is: whether your game is successful or not depends on the whims of the masses at the time your game releases. so it's not like building a house, it's like building a tourist attraction. or like running for office. or like composing a song. there is so much outside your ability to model and predict, and therefore outside your control.

from what little personal experience I have it's true
but also from looking at other peoples' games, you can just tell
>oh, you've made [typically unsuccessful genre] before and it didn't do well and now you're making incremental gambleslop? yeah that'll probably do well, I don't even need to see the game

it's harder to tell when it's someone else's game, however, and you can never predict just how successful or unsuccessful it'll be, just a general range.
I was surprised by a game recently but thinking about it, the devs had experience polishing what would otherwise be an unsuccessful game and could make successful games just by having consistently good humor and polish so it's not surprising that they just keep winning every single time despite making games that shouldn't
>>
if comedy/fun happens through breaking taboos. what are modern day taboos? and i don't mean political taboos, actual taboos even online. e.g. being racist isn't a taboo online, it's just a political taboo.
are there even any taboos left? or is it also important that the taboo is semi-acceptable? otherwise it's not fun, but just attention-whoring.
>>

>Why buy Selaco when you can boot up the latest Brutal Doom + addons on some GZDoom built map pack?
NTA but the same reason I bought Oblivion Remastered instead of fiddling with mods. Games are entertainment and I don't want to work and do research when I want to have fun.
>>
>>560841527
there's a reason studios pitch ideas before making them. same with prototypes. they don't run on the idea that you "can't know if the game will be a success upfront". literally their whole strategy is to know it upfront by proving a concept first.
>>
It's wild to me when artists say they can't code. You just have to learn what arrays, loops and conditionals are for an evening and you're essentially guaranteed to sell copies whereas autists have to spend at least three years trying to learn asset creation just to meet the minimum base line to be able to potentially, possibly maybe sell a game.

zombie games are about enjoying the fruits of societies achievements (architecture, food, furniture, art, shelter, electricity, clothing etc. etc.) without the annoyance of other humans claiming all this wealth for themselves. it's a way to dehumanize humans into dead walking creatures that you are allowed to kill to get their stuff.
on a deep psychological level it describes our urge to kill and steal. but we can't do it because we empathize with real humans, so if we imagine them to be monster, we are finally allowed to kill them and take their stuff.
the only thing missing is some sort of apocalypse harem and apocalypse bros. that's why people are so desperate for npc's in project zomboid.

you don't understand. the gross value on steamworks shows how much your game earned BEFORE vat and taxes. net is after and valve's 30% cut is applied to the net, not gross.

so let's say you earn 1 million dollars gross from your game. great right? well no, roughly 20% of that goes to vat and valve's taxes. so you're left with 800 thousand. and THEN valve applies their cut and you're left with like around 500-450 thousand dollars that then get taxed additionaly in whatever country you live in. that's where the "you don't see 50% of your income from games on steam" number comes from.
oh and if your country doesn't have a tax treaty with the united statia then you're gonna get fucked by pre-taxes even more. enjoy, gekyume.

people arguing about the amount of games released nowadays really ignore how inflated that number is. i just analyzed 100 new games and at least 95 of them were absolute indian slop platformers with 0 content and laughable music/sound design etc. - basically like hobby projects of little girls.
it's a piss poor way to measure actual game releases via steam. cause literally everybody can release anything on that platform. you can just make a game about pressing a banana and put it on steam.

6-8 are the only valid measures for someone making a commercial product. Anything above 8 is more of a curse since it will follow you for the rest of your life even if you want to escape it.
Anything below 6 is a valid goal for amateurs and hobbyists.
If you post here you should be aiming for 6 or below, anyone expecting anything above 6 here is a delusional nodev fag.
Someone will respond to this post with a tiresome "MY game will be a 10" but instead of attaching an image of their game they'll attach a bocchi or some fag reaction image garbage, this is because they dont make games.

the problem is that "your only move is to hustle" is a 5. it will earn the dev some passive income but it won't be enough to sustain gamedev as a career unless you also get lucky with investing that money and double it. commercial gamedev, even if you go solo, is quite expensive.
and also do note that he probably didn't get ALL of those 4 mil or at once. 50-60% was eaten by taxes

It's fine to scope things down and very often devs think they need more enemies or bosses or classes than they really do,
but in this case you can't just put the shotgun game's clothes on and pretend you can also get away with one enemy because the shotgun game did. Players will look for indications of how much content the game has by seeing different environments / enemies / etc and so if there's just one environment with just one enemy they'll be wary.
Of course, it does scope things up a lot. Having a lazy, generic enemy stand-in and then having the current one as a boss might work.

But the newbie thing is important. Your main market will be (I don't know if you're polled it, maybe you should) players who are aware of mahjong but haven't actually played and are willing to learn, and would buy a game like this since they can learn it in a low-stakes / solo environment... maybe. I'm guessing.

That was something I thought about too. Obviously I am borrowing liberally from Akagi and Kaiji here, so I was going to have generic guys in suits as the standard opponents, with actual characters for the boss levels.
It's visual flair that I might need, but it doesn't add anything more than that.

Assuming USA
3.29m x .37 tax (this is an overestimation since it is a progressive tax and the dev didnt earn 3.2m in one year at once) = 2m
Additional Misc fees and State taxes (if applicable)
2m - 500k = 1.5m

1.5m x .06 roi (very low on average end) = 90k year

Currently adjusting grabs. For now they're getting nerfed, where grabbing a target doesn't automatically stun the target. What is not perfect:

- a few tiny interjections ended up as Unknown
- there are some local transcription errors in wording
- the recording starts mid-thought, so the very beginning has less anchoring context

So my actual confidence is:

- high confidence on the two main speakers
- low importance / low confidence on the short Unknown fragments
- good enough for the raw transcript and definitely good enough for the gamedev-side synthesis

Got grab breaks working. Right now the way it works is you tap the dodge button to try to break the grab. Every tap will reduce your stamina by the same amount a dodge would, but it reduces the enemy's stamina as well. Once the enemy's stamina is brought to zero, the grab breaks and you're pushed away from each other. I'll probably modify it so hammering the dodge button as fast as possible isn't required.

they will always tell you they have no ideas, but they'll never ask how to improve in finding ideas.
basically the dumber someone is the more they believe in magic. for them everything becomes esoteric and therefore nothing can truly be known.
those people create an atmosphere that completely discourages people who try to find patterns from participating in arguments.

Back in the day when you needed a texture or sound effect you'd pick something out of a stock asset library and nobody was wringing their hands over whether the use of stock assets meant the game was soulless slop. A human picked content to fit the aesthetic they were going for and it didn't matter whether it was actually handmade for the game or not, all that mattered was the act of human curation. Now you give devs an infinite pool of generated assets to pick from and people lose their goddamn minds.

Not 100% sure what you're asking, but the RPG mechanics in the game is just stat leveling. It's an RPG in the same way Diablo or Dark Souls is, not in the same way Baldurs Gate or Fallout is an RPG. Moku is an action and exploration game, first and foremost.

okay, looking at it, it is very obviously not AI
It is stiff and kinda art commission-ey rather than something you'd expect of a game but it seems they used a 3D model and drew over it.
It is consistent, there's another image from a different angle.

So the "your art is stiff" is the only thing you can really derive from that besides "people are retarded sometimes". I think it's ridiculous we expect 100% of steam reviews to be 100% honest and not written by retards.

why would you play 100000000000000 games of the same genre and expect and to enjoy it the 100000000000001st time
some negative reviews can safely be ignored, summarized as the reviewer being in an irrationally negative mood

This code is a C program that uses preprocessor macros and obfuscation to obscure its functionality.
How the code works
The program relies on several #define macros to hide standard C syntax:
Z(x): Creates typedef aliases. For example, Z(int) expands to typedef unsigned int Zint;.
W and Q(n): The line W; Q(T); defines a structure and then attempts to declare it. Note that Q(T) expands to TT;, which is syntactically invalid in standard C unless TT is a defined type, suggesting the code is intentionally broken or obfuscated to prevent easy compilation.
R(x): This is the core logic. It takes a value x and performs a bitwise XOR operation (^) with 0x40 (decimal 64).
U s[]: This defines an array of characters initialized with these XORed values.
V (and the main loop): The program loops through the array s and uses putchar to print each character to the terminal.
The Output
When executed, the program does not print the original, human-readable characters. Because the program prints the raw, XORed values stored in the array s, the output is "mangled."
For example, the first character is initialized as R(0x79) (which is 0x79 ^ 0x40 = 0x39). 0x39 is the ASCII character '9'.
If you were to "reverse" the operation (XORing each character again with 0x40), the code would reveal the original string, which is: "you're a faggot". However, because the code performs the XOR but prints the result directly, it outputs a sequence of symbols and garbage text rather than this phrase.
Summary
The code is a form of C obfuscation (often used in code golf or puzzles) designed to hide a message by encoding it with XOR logic. It is not functional standard C code due to the syntax errors (specifically the Q(T) macro) and is designed to obscure its content rather than perform a practical utility.

riddle me this
i am storing and networking my item data like this
i am adding durability to armor which is just a number from 0-100 or something
without extending item data at all, that means durability has to live inside of NetMetadata, which is a hash table of bytestrings. i directly cast the bytestrings to and from a number every time i read/write item durability, including when the value updates, when something containing or holding the item is networked, and when the UI icon for the item updates (which happens lazily not every frame or anything)
is this silly? should I instead move it out of metadata, and define it next to itemId and count, even though most items dont have durability? am i overthinking this?

I've finally come to the conclusion that I don't actually want to make a game, I just have a creative drive and happen to like video games. Realistically I'd be happy making anything, whether it be writing a short story or drawing a picture or even just cooking something. I need to become better at differentiating between when I actually WANT to do something and when my brain is telling me "wouldn't it be cool if I could make something like this". I don't need to act on every impulse I get to drop what I'm doing and start a new project. I wish I'd understood this before wasting 2 years of my life on a game that I was never going to finish, but oh well.

Writing a story doesn't require me to waste months of my life learning how to program, 3D model, texture said 3D model, animate said 3D model, and import said 3D model with its textures an animation into an engine which I then have to spend more months of my life learning how to use.

- Claude was the most dismissive. It called it the wrong market, wrong tier, basically nothing transferable.
- GPT-5.4 also ranked it last, but still thought the credibility/stat strip idea was useful.
- GPT-5.3 Codex was similar to 5.4: weak visual reference, but decent reminder for trust signals and metrics.

Net difference

- Agreement: visually weak benchmark
- Difference:
- Claude: almost total write-off
- 5.4 / 5.3: weak aesthetically, but not useless for proof framing

If you were so convinced I couldn't do it, you wouldn't be this mad. I might not know gamedev, but I do know code. Except I'm used to programming PLC's and industrial robots.

The key is to be the project manager and treat the LLM's like consultants and code monkeys.
>throw project sketch to LLM
>specify what it absolutely must contain
>they throw back an extended draft
>modify absolute requirements until the draft sounds like what I want
>have LLM's hash out details
>throw the project at another LLM
>take the feedback from that one and throw it at the first one
>they verify their own ideas against the feedback
>do this until literally every single aspect is covered
>divide project into stages
>have LLM's draft a plan for each stage
>throw plan between other LLM's for feedback and gaps that might've been missed
>do until plan covers absolutely everything
>throw project description and plan at Claude
>get the exact code I need

I've done this multiple times. Just never with a video game.

If you aren’t using every tool available to ship your slop, you’re just going to be another "ideas guy" posting devlogs for a game that will never have a builds folder.

The real filter isn't the AI, it's the fact that you've spent three hours scrolling this thread instead of fixing your player controller's state machine. LLMs are just the new middleware. Ten years ago you’d be complaining that using Unity isn't "real programming" because you didn't write your own engine in C++.

This might look like my last post but there was a lot of work behind the scenes. Basic mesh system is up. Meshes are intended to be objects in the 3D world. Still need to set up camera and instanced rendering so you can have multiple mesh copies.

The hard part, the foundation, is done though.
The code generates pipelines at runtime from one GLSL file using the C-style preprocessor macros that GLSL supports. Currently you can provide any possible combination of the following vertex attributes: position, color, and normals (with position required) and additional features: wireframe (only one feature so far, will add more).

Meshes consist of offsets into a single vertex and index buffer. The vertex buffer is partitioned by vertex attribute combinations.(While there will be many possible combinations, the actual runtime partitions will be much smaller, so you register the attribute combinations to an index.) So when drawing the vertex buffer is bound for each of these partitions and the index buffer is bound once.

At some point it might be a good idea to set up indirect drawing to reduce the number of draw calls to 1.

You know what sucks about these moves?
Every other action game already took all the cool distinctive ones, so I have to come up with that fucking pinwheel to be slightly more original

Gajidev here. I wanna redesign the cola can of Wagie Run, but i dont know... Should i be:
1. faithful to pepsi, with red and blue fictional brand
2. white monster, because of recent retarded agharta memes
3. reference other memes?

I'd suggest the can color be something that's not overly present in your game. like in mirror's edge where the player's been trained to go toward anything red. as for the design, play with it. design some billboards for the cola, give it some twist.
