hypothetically, if you had a game where you released a demo after one month of progress and hardly anyone played it and no one commented, would you cancel the game and try something else or keep going? i think i might be able to finish it completely in another two months, it's just unlikely it would find a target audience.
>>560488051did you do everything u were able to do to promote said game?
>>560489949>did you do everything u were able to do to promote said game?no, not at al and i don't know the first thing about it or how not to completely botch a game release. i have no social media, really.
>>560490221then start there
>>560488051>where you released a demoOn Steam? You are guaranteed to get at least a few dozen players, and from those few dozen, you should look at your median playtime. If your median is very low (<15 minutes), it means your game is shit.
>>560490750okay, i think my issue might even be having a game that's worth marketing. my demo provides maybe ten minutes of gameplay. if a finished my game, it might provide a few hours of gameplay at best but i worry it would become monotonous with the first half hour. it's just kind of a flawed concept for a game. i'm afraid it's not something i could easily change either without basically throwing the whole thing out and starting over. i think my game mainly exists as an interesting tech demo for an engine nobody but me will ever use. maybe this is my game's post mortem.
>>560490906it was just carelessly tossed onto itch to see if anyone here would give me some early feedback but i am finding such things don't come easily. the lack of feedback could be taken to mean my game is shit.
>>560491638Are you the only linux build guy? That's less than careless. That's like leaving a botched meal on top of a dumpster and expecting someone to eat it (only the most desperate degen would).
>>560472110But LLMs need VRAM, not RAM - they run on the GPU. You can get like 2x 3090 if you want to run shit locally.
>>560472496>They need to figure out how to lower that tremendouslyWhy don't they just... ban anyone who can't pass an IQ exam? We don't need Indian creations here.
>>560492373They'll just use AI to pass the IQ exam.
>>560492460Make it in person. Find some jobless artist to administer the exams.
>>560492373Because cheap labor from Indians equipped with LLMS outweighs the cost of paying proper salaries in first world countries in the long term. It's a short term loss, long term gain.
>>560492148i managed to convert it to a webgl build but there's just little of substance for someone to actually play. that's the real problem. did you want to play it?
>>560491638itch is the dead sea if its not a porn game. It is not an accurate gauge for how the game will do on Steam. My honest advice would be to ask YOURSELF if it's a game you would buy on Steam, WHY or WHY NOT?You will end this project eventually finished or not, but your skills in game design and finding the fun will persist.
>>560492576the literal opposite of that is true you fucking moronoutsourcing to jeets with chatgpt is a short term gain because they are cheaper than paying someone who knows what they are doing, but long term they will completely destroy your product and run you into the ground
>>560492704>there's just little of substance for someone to actually play.I mean, that already tells me enough. It's fine. I'm sure you learned a lot in making this project, so it's not a waste. If you want a substantial number of people to play your game, it does actually have to be a game with gameplay and not be just an empty tech demo.
My game will get 1 million sales. I wish you all the best out there! But I just think you guys just dont care enough.... sucks to suck!
>>560492732i'm learning that i need to put substance over style and have actually good gameplay loop or i'll never have anything worth marketing and i should target windows and not an OS 1% of people use. and just use godot because my engine that i put so much work into is maybe a hair more performant than a web build of a game engine and has a small fraction of the features.
>>560492151You can run llms off of ram purely using the cpu its just really slow. If you need like an 'oracle' machine with an extremely dense model that you only use every once in a while the cheapest way to do it is to build a server with a ton of ram. Still though vram and ram are made using a similar process and what open AI did was book the fabs for the next few years to make HBM so they aren't producing as much ram or vram.Manufacturing HBM consumes roughly three times more wafer capacity per gigabyte than traditional DRAM. Memory producers reallocated capacity to HBM, shrinking the available capacity for conventional DRAM and VRAM.
>>560492735No, it's a short term loss (burning money and operating the business at a loss) but long term gain (SV salaries will go down to <$100k from $500k).

now i'm actually starting to get some ideas that might make my vector graphics game more engaging like rpg mechanics, dungeons and towns with NPCs kind of like daggerfall. does this pique anyone's interest?
>>560492735>long term they will completely destroy your product and run you into the groundBeing an investor or on the board of directors does not guarantee you have good business sense and there are multiple reasons why they sometimes choose to seek short term profit and run a company to the ground. It is also true that once a tech company manages to secure more revenue streams they will hire more and more finance/marketing people to optimize them and develop new ones, any department will continue to justify its own existence and be oblivious to their own bloat. It is also easier to say that the people bringing in the dragon hoard from selling overpriced junk to businesses and governments are more important than your development teams because optimization and functioning software cannot easily be quantified into profits on a spreadsheet. Regardless it is often in the 'unseen variable' where the real value of the company lies, quiet quitting among customers is also common where you previously had brand loyalty you now have people waiting for a better alternative to come along. You can track signs of this, but it is an inconvenient truth to the CFOs out there so it usually gets translated into more and more aggressive upselling, you can usually tell how grim the situation by how aggressive their monetization strategy is towards their already existing customers.
>>560495379The vector graphics idea is kind of stupid. It doesn't look good. No shading and no obstruction = impossible to communicate depth. A real daggerfall-like will always find an audience, but it's also 100x+ bigger than what you have so far, so expect to take 100 months or 8 years of constant and consistent work to get there, which is humanly impossible (you will burn out and waste years). If you really want to get into gamedev long term, go play some smaller successful indie games like incrementals and roguelikes. Find some open space in a more reasonably scoped genre, and just use a real engine.
Editor done.:DNow I have a functional level editor for my engine.
>>560497647by next week you'll have a different engine, editor and game I'm sure
>>560496474look, you are my strongest critic and i don't know if i should hold your opinion on my game over mine but maybe i could compromise on our ideas and make a 3d roguelike in the same style as my current game. i wish i had more feedback on the style of my game than just your opinion. i personally don't find it difficult to gauge depth in my game. i just don't think following the crowd and giving up the single unique aspect of my game would be good. i would just end up making a generic roguelike or incremental of which there are many to choose. i guess when my game bombs someday because of it's art style you can find me and say "i told you so".
>>560497647mejor usa ia puto
>>560498438The art style isn't going to kill the game, but it's also not a plus in any way. You can make a daggerfall-like in the style of old ASCII Dwarf Fortress, but people would still want to play it because it has hundreds of hours of content (and they'll even mod it for you for free to fix your shit graphics), but getting to that hundreds of hours of content takes an ungodly amount of work.Unique doesn't mean good. Players don't want unique. They want more of what they already know they'll enjoy. Personally, I'd say the art style is too abstract. It's too hard for potential players to understand at a glance what they're looking at, and so they'll be too quick to dismiss it. If you already have tens of thousands of players playing the game, more players would be convinced to look past the abstract art style and try the game, but getting that first ten thousand is going to be nigh impossible.
>>560498975>Dwarf FortressIt did boost popularity when they upgraded the graphics and put it on Steam though
>>560499553They didn't "upgrade" it to some weird abstract art style. They upgraded it to some very standard pixel art.

It works
I made this in Godot. It's a single room "spaceship" because I don't know what I want it to look like. But you can move around and also fly the ship. The "viewscreen" is from a camera on the ship's exterior, so I can have different cameras etc.At the moment, I just have a sun, stars, a planet, and a ball wiggling around for testing purposes. Can anyone suggest something to do with this? Originally I was setting out to do a single player space trading game, but there's tonnes of those and it feels boring.
>>560418576Still thinkning on how to reduce Overheat status. Have less options now:1) Drink water and/or other drinks once a minute2) Add spots with buckets of water in heated locations so you can pour water over yourself (new suggested idea - jump in that water barrel to chill out)3) Add spots with cold showers (maybe limited uses)What do you think on them, anon?Anon that suggested place like minilake, it is cool, but idea should be that water is kinda limited there.
>>560513914Maybe a hierarchy of cooling items the player gets as they progress in the heated zones.>start with very limited options, just some bottles of water to cool off with, ponds/water sources are very rare so the player needs to balance exploring with the supply they have>water could also be used to extinguish fire walls/doors, so the player can decide further if they want to risk exploring an area while reducing their supply of cooling>next tier could be just a bigger bottle or better cooling, extends exploration>final tier could be a special item, like the inverse of the thermal rock in Don't Starve, that slows the effect of overheatingJust some ideas off the top of my head, I'm sure this can be refined further.
171 days left and that's an optimistic estimate. I did the numbers and February was my lowest income month since September 2018. It's February so it's a bit shorter but still it's looking grim.Yesterday I spent the day working on UI and it must have been enjoyable because I finished work early. Going on past experience, that probably means I'm wasting time and should move on to something else, which I will.
Hey, newbie dev here.I'm currently finishing the demo for an RPGMaker h-game I'm making atm. Figured I'd shill it to some of you guys here for critique once the demo drops sometime this week (I'll be posting a link to a MEGA). Demo will be free, full game I think 5$ but I'll post links here (and on F95) for free anyways cause lmao who buys RPGMaker games. The basic overview is that it'll be a "4 niggas in a row" RPG where you can romance the 3 other party members. Decently linear story with some side content and hidden easter eggs you can find, basically a small scope, easy project for a first timer. Also it's a /hmofa/ RPG, so if you miss the link being posted here you can find it in the /hmofa/ threads on trash, it'll likely be linked in the OP after posting.Pic related, smug cat merchant.
>>560514739Nice art! Gameplay?
>>560514815I don't have any vids to show, mostly cause the demo will be released very soon anyways (a few days). It's an RPGMaker game, so naturally it's a turn based combat game. I tried my best to make the combat a bit interesting by making skills "combo based" where you usually need to prebuff with certain skills, and those states gained will unlock further effects for more powerful skills. There's an ebb and flow to the combat where the basic loop is "buff > attack > buff > attack" and if a curveball from the enemy interrupts this loop the player would have to find methods to get back into it without taking too much damage/debuffs.This causes combat to last a while, so I decided to remove random encounters and make every combat encounter a scripted and finite one. The overall "feeling" of this makes it feel more like a TTRPG where a GM sets up specific encounters and lets you deal with them as you see fit, or even avoid them if you can. There's not EXP to grind, but enemies will drop items and usually act as path blockers, so there's still a reason to fight. However it's a good idea to explore around first before committing to an encounter. As for story and dialogue, there's not a huge amount of different paths and things to explore, but there are some hidden things and different dialogue choices you can make to slightly alter how scenarios/acts play out. Plus, since it's an H-game focused on romance the side content with your chosen romantic interest would have influence on some of the main story beats. Like learning extra things about the quest you're currently on, or gaining a unique buff for the final fight in the game.
>>560514815>>560515237Also the art isn't mine. I'm working with a team of 3 artists from the /hmofa/ threads on trash who liked the prototype game I presented to them.Turns out people are more willing to work alongside you if you actually have something to show instead of just being an ideas guy, who knew.
I wonder how Boku feels being associated with this

>>560515321Don't count your chickens until they're hatched anon. I've been ghosted by 4channers I teamed up 6 months into development just fine. Making a game is a huge commitment and most people don't realize that until a couple of months. It's effectively 1-2 hours of work a day without getting paid and most don't have the grit for that long term. Probably not a big issue if you can actually finish the game in 6 months though.
>>560516324>>>/v/735012418
>>560499964i think my game will probably flop regardless so i might as well just carry out my original vision and be satisfied with that at least.
I'm so happy chuds.I feel like I can design my engine to suit perfectly my own tastes instead of trying to fit a gui editor to do things in a way I don't enjoy. It's like going from shoes you buy that are expensive but always left you bothered because they don't 100% fit your feet shape, to having custom tailor made shoes that fit perfectly.

1 000 000 objects at above 80+FPS (without OBS). Can go up to 1.5M with only minor dips under 60.Still doing incremental prototypes to transfer my RTS fully onto Compute Shader. This is prototype #2.Added friction so objects would actually fucking stop.Biggest objective (99% done) was having proper rendering capabilities, with each object being able to have different mesh/material or even to have more than one visual object per entity - previous prototype had everyone use the same thing so any position automatically meant the same sprite, which simplified things tremendously. Now this part finally work, and I even added a bootleg LOD fade system that my non-compute shader game didn't have (will probably need to swap to dithered alphaclip transparency for it tho, not practical long term to have every object be technically transparent).Collisions are still pure boid under the hood so they work but are weird, that's next on the todo list.

>>560628108SDL is a multimedia library. It can handle window creation, 2D textures blitting to the screen, multiplayer, sound, TTF fonts. You can even combined it with OpenGL to let OpenGL handle the 3D rendering while SDL takes care of the input and window management. But honestly, SDL is a bit old and legacy by now.My advice is that you should use raylib now.Use Nim with raylib if you want a similar low level experience to make a game but feels actually like using a game engine in terms of how easy is nim with raylib.

>>560475319Last time I checked Godot isn't great for 3D, but Godot works fine with Blender yeah
>>560628108If you want to make games in C++ you essentially want one of these, SDL, SFML, Allegro, or similar. You use it to set up a window and render to it, and handle input. You really don't want to skip out on this part. Then to render graphics you can either go with the frameworks own primitive graphics pipeline, or set up your own opengl workflow with glew. The former is very easy to get going, the latter has a longer learning curve.
>>560634752>But honestly, SDL is a bit old and legacy by now.I disagree, at least if you're rocking your own OpenGL. It is well supported and easy to port to other platforms.
>>560634752SDL3 released just last year, why do you say it's old and legacy?

>>560639942Maybe you don't need a big market to make a living, just a dedicated onehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stxVBJem3Rs
>>560639885Not him but I know that some of the modules are handled better with other frameworks. For example there is the SDL sound library, it is very primitive. If you need positional sound you're better off using OpenAL soft. IIRC they also have a network library, and you're better off using something else like RakNet or steamworks network sdk. These are just extra frameworks that you don't need to include, personally I use SDL2 still, for window and input handling and there are no issues whatsoever.

But you'll need to know opengl or vulcan if you want to make your own rendering engine.Basically it has most of the hardware access you need but it lacks everything else like the primary engines for a game like a physics engine, rendering engine, UI, input handler, ect.I'd recommend raylib actually, it's a bit more accessible.if you want to make a 3d game, seriously just don't fucking bother with sdl or raylib.
>>560658997>if you want to make a 3d game, seriously just don't fucking bother with sdl or raylib. There's nothing wrong with using SDL for 3D, it's just a lot more work to write your game on top of your own graphics and game engine. So if I wanted some ability that does extra damage if you attack something that has a lower speed stat than yourself I could just assign two int Providers in the editor to that ability and set it to check that one is greater than the other. But if I wanted a character who does extra damage to enemies of the same sex, or even if I just wanted a character who has different dialogue if they're talking to a man vs a woman, I use the exact same concept except instead of an int provider I use a sex provider that provides the sex of a given character for comparison in some conditional.

>>560720471Honestly, pretty easy. There's this concept of a 'production platform' in biotech, and since in this case the output is the product of a pathway, and not a part of the pathway itself, it becomes a lot easier to purify and concentrate. The issue you may face from lifting THC production into a yeast, is that the glycosylation performed in the ER of yeast will be distinct from a plant, which may lead to non-functioning variants of the enzymatic pathway required for synthesis of the output or precursors. So, to prevent that a better move would be to splice the pathway into a more compatible organism, possible a single-celled green algae. I wrote a biotech program for this type of work already, and for normalizing things to get around the glycosylation and codon differences in different groups of organisms.
>>560720783nigga will do anything to get high
>>560720471oh and btw, equipment can be aped for $500 in USA if you really needed to get it done.Step 0. Get DNA, there are lots of methods, for a set sequence I recommend PCR in water baths, single tube reaction, primers may be harder to get than other parts of the process. For one reaction this is theoretically quite cheap, but they mostly sell TAQ polymerase in batches of like 500 reactions because it fits in 1ml. Step 1. Set up a helium tank and some silicone tubing like a blow gun.Step 2. Precipitate tungsten 1 micron dust into smaller gauge silicone tubing with ethanolStep 3. Precipitate the DNA on to the tungsten in the tube, low flow rate here is important or the tungsten gets flushed throughStep 4. Cut and load the small gauge into the larger gauge silicone tubing, about 2cm/shot, place a strong parafilm wrapping around this and cut a hole for just the output.Step 5. Use one hand to position the output over target cells (egg cell, plant stem cell thallus, bacterial colony, tissue culture) Step 6. Puff the helium tank to output, and close it, thus blasting the DNA-coated tungsten into the nuclei of the cellsStep 7. selective screen for transformants, agar plates, kanamycin, or a reporter gene (GFP family, or other pigments work well)You could honestly do it easily, I recommend reading some biotech handbooks.https://files.catbox.moe/6yejvs.pdfhttps://files.catbox.moe/kidrm7.zip

>try to find static laws in a dynamically changing systemthis is why people get desperate for a formula.sick people wanna figure out "how to be healthy".poor people wanna figure out "how to be rich".single people wanna figure out "how find a partner".and then everything becomes very goal-oriented because you think you can control this. and therefore we start to filter out everything in life that we don't associate with solving our goal.this is exactly the nostalgia about being a child again. because as a child your orientation in life was more about reacting to life and not about trying to "solve it". e.g. children are very honest when they judge something, because they don't have ulterior motives. (ofc they have to some degree too, but not as extreme as adults)so our life becomes more about trying to stick to made up rules we believe will lead us to our goal, instead of just feeling the moment. and therefore we make ourselves believe we are moving towards our goal, when in fact what we are doing could make things even worse. because we don't know how the combinatorial explosion of reality will play out over time.someone might just be depressed and play games all day and meet new people and suddenly get a job (yeah that blizzard guys story). some try hard to find a job and find none (e.g. academics)i tend to believe nowadays that letting go and just believing in gods plan has better chances of winning that using your low iq brain trying to solve a dynamic complex system with combinatorial explosion.but i don't think this can be a "strategy" to achieve anything. it's just a realization of a true fact, that you don't have control over outcomes. it's not about using this realization to achieve anything, it's more about escaping the total lie that you even have control over outcomes. because it never was true and never will be.

tooldev is probably a role similar to support/healer in games. nobody really wants to do it.think about it e.g. making a walk animation. if someone would fully focus on tooldev. you'd have software that completely helps you with that, with references, with tools etc.but i think everyone wants to be the damage dealer (gamedev), therefore nobody wants to build tools, but everybody wants to build games and make money with them.i think e.g. csg tools for map design is a good example. it'd be really useful for tons of gamedevs, but it doesn't exist or is mostly jank. nowhere near as good as hammer editor.

Since there are limited spots, obviously not everyone will get there. Someone who got admitted there not by his efforts, but solely through connections or to fill a racial quote does not *deserve* to be there. Yes I do think we use *deserve* differently. I use it from a moral/justice point of view, because that's when people bring up "deserving of": in the context of injustice being present. "He doesn't deserve the gold medal because he did steroids at some point. She doesn't deserve that salary, she just sucked the CEO's dick". etc. etc. If two people of identical skillsets apply to a job position, but there's only 1 slot and the employee literally gets chosen at random, did any of them "deserve" the job more than the other? No, they both deserved it equally, but of course "deserving" something doesn't mean you'll actually get it because we don't live in an ideal world. But from a moral point of view the still both "deserve it".

what do you think of this game idea:Short 2-3 hour VN/simple rpg without lots of systems set in the future. society is basically a utopia. gene editing is a huge thing and everyone is perfect. but everyone being almost the same makes society too boring so they use their future tech to extract data from ancient remains and imbue newborn perfect children with ancient humans to get a tiny touch of uniqueness. this basically means that every character in-game has the personality and general appearance (except way more sexy looking due to their perfect genetics) of a famous historical figure, but isn't *really* them. they don't have the persons life memories or experiences. so the person with hitlers personality is not automatically evil or knows what the real historical figure did, they're just a high dominance, charismatic, narcissistic, volatile individual. unexplainably, something has gone wrong in the utopia for the first time in centuries and all signs point to sabotage. you're tasked with figuring out what has happened as a detective of sorts, and on the way you encounter and interact with tons of different historical figures like jesus, caesar, cleopatra, napoleon, joan of arc, washington etc
>>560785036don't do it. i hated my art and wanted to kill myself because i sucked but i just kept at it and eventually i sucked less to the point where i got hired to make it. it just takes time. and even if it doesn't happen for you, your value as a human is not determined by what kind of work you can create or not, that's a jewish lie to try and get you to be a slave

>>560788641I want to try my hand it an LOD system that automatically uses POM. So instead of what I'm doing here, which is defining the trees through a shader that reads from a texture, I'll want to actually place high fidelity meshes, and have the system automatically bake a very high definition height and color map. It would then be loaded per-tile depending on how many pixels each tile is taking up on the screen (SVT).I will want, however, to make a game out of it. I already have a texture defining the trees. So I'll either add other things that will then move perhaps through a compute shader, or I'll move the trees themselves and make them the enemy in a surrealist "can't trust nature" game.
