I think I'm just not smart enough for this shit. I can barely code, so the options for games I can realistically make on my own are extremely limited. I was thinking about making a point and click game, something that's basically just a glorified slideshow, but I have no idea how to add a gimmick that would make modern players actually interested in playing such a simple game. It's not like I don't have any ideas, I have plenty. The problem is finding an idea that's actually within my extremely limited skill level.

Also the simpler my ideas get, the less interested in then I get. I don't really want to make a point and click game, but anything more complex isn't an achievable goal. I once tried to make a Vampire Survivors clone (which I also wasn't really interested in) and even that was too complicated for me. This fucking sucks.

You should make a codex first--I think this is the best approach for non-technical people. Table top games explain all of their rules, lore, characters, etc in a single book. That book becomes the bible for how that game works. People were able to make games based on D&D because D&D specifies in great detail how all game systems work.

Spend some time making yourself a book that you find enjoyable to look at, and define your systems in there. If somebody non-technical brought me a codex like this and said "can you help me make this a game?" this signals to me a few things. 1.) you've put in a ton of effort and you actually care and have skin in the game 2.) my life is much easier because I can just take your system equations written in plain language and write them into code. That doesn't take much thinking if it's already declared.

hopefully this didn't get crushed when turning it into a 4mb webm.
basically I have yugioh quick-effect type abilities in this game that allow you to do a bunch of stuff with your units if they're in the radius of your "commander" unit even during the enemy turn, but it costs a resource called "leadership stars" which is shown next to the commander.
I implemented a couple movement related ones today and the webm is just showing off that you can chain them together to set up hit and run strategies with some setup. The language for the descriptions is kinda bad right now I need to make the syntax more consistent.

You don't even need shaders for this.
Copy paste the object, scale it a little bigger, turn it into all white, then some of the art program allow you to blur the image. And then you have your glowy effect.
For the lightning shine, just draw a ray of shine, put a few behind the object, rotate them during the game, and you got the lighting shine effects.

Filling the screen from top-to-bottom with buttons like in the top-right case isn't always a good idea. You'd ideally want some breathing space, maybe between logo and buttons. I guess it's not easy to change that without a scroller though ...
Eh, it's probably fine.

I think the way it displays stats is overall clearer (having it be semi-transparent behind the stats feels like it diminishes the focus on the reward screen) ... Same for the difficulty icons, I like the black text over the white text and the clear difference between song name and creator on the right, as well as the position of options.
The more I'm thinking about it, the more I'd say, right is better. It really did lose some soul but it's clear and professional and competent and has some neat extra graphical effects.
Unless there are animations on the left side that outweigh the right side, in which case it's harder to say.

If the right side had some way that it plays the image/video in the background only after hovering over it long enough that could bring back some of that lost soul.
