It's time to put the whole 'party game' narrative in the casket and set fire to it. The idea of a party game is that you're not slaughtering, humiliating or dominating each other. So a party game must work hard to prevent that outcome. It should include random events like blue shells or dice rolls to limit the more skilled players and give the shit players a chance to make things happen. Like death streaks in MW2an actual party game. Halo 1 is not like that. It has pinpoint accuracy, the pistol and extremely easy spawn killing once you acquire the pistol. It does nothing to prevent any of this. Nothing to throw a wrench in the works. So it can be said that it encourages competitiveness. It is a game about destroying your opponent. The only way it's a party game is if you trust the players not to play it the way it encourages you to play it. Like when you head canon plot holes in a shit story. You have to do all the work. You have to make rules and enforce them. So Halo 1 is not a party game. It does not in any way support this playstyle. The players have to invent this idea and trust each other to abide by it. It is forced.

He doesn't have to care about Halo for Halo's sake, just the logic of selling what the audience is expecting. It's basic sales sense. If Halo was going to be put on ice, fine. Think the mode/map for this one in particular was called SUMO, but I've seen similar modes/maps called different names, like Bumper Cars, Monster Trucks, etc. Even Infinite has its own versions, including one with a cone everyone drives around with a death ball in the middle that you try to nudge each other into, and the more time passes, a new death ball will appear and fly around the cone. Yeah, there's a bunch of different variants, but people still play them on MCC if you can catch them.
