Bungie seemingly wanted to make the most "hardcore" extraction shooter that they failed to realize that there is only so many restrictions you can add before players lose interest. Hunt and Arc have optional progression resets, Marathon does not because of the colored loot system it has. That also gives Marathon a sense of gear fear that you might not get in something like like Hunt, because the gun attachments, colored backpacks and shields can give you a huge advantage. The 4th map is only accessible on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays so you basically have to revolve your playtime around it. There's just an amazing amount of odd design decisions.

Couple that with an extremely piss poor tutorial that basically leaves it up to you to figure the rest out on your own, some massive jumps in contract difficulty, and a meta that now consists of cloaked assassins sniping you from long range or ratting you near an extraction point, and it’s easy to see why players have had enough.
