>>562729917Every successful incremental has dozens of interconnected game mechanics, which is more than your typical RPG movieslop. The mechanics just aren't as obtuse, i.e. unnecessarily difficult to learn. Most successful incrementals also present some narrative arc, usually with some very reasonably attainable climax and conclusion, which is why they feel so good to play. You need to think of successful smaller games not as "less" but rather as "distilled down to just the most important elements".

how do i stop my ai from breaking the 4th wall?
After using agentic coding for about three weeks I wanted to share some thoughts. No Progress post until I've completed the demo however.Current-gen models have passed the benchmark of being "good-enough" for writing code directly into the project, I can prompt with a well-defined AGENTS.md file, linting rules, and it generally does exactly what I want for short-shot tasks and utilizing an empty context with a "review" prompt catches most styling violations before I take a look at the changes in a git editor and fix any jank OR mark any random hallucinations that might be useful. The problem is that now it's way easier to create slop, that is, bad code generated quickly, so I've been tinkering a lot with how my engine and game functionality is architected. So far the best ways I've found is "Fat Struct" to organize game state, that is, all game state is stored in one large, flat struct object that's passed everywhere(and serializable!) along with "System-Based" design instead of OOP, which is when you organize by functionality instead of by fragile domain mappings, e.g. you have one "draw" system that's a pure function of "state -> drawing on the screen" instead of a `draw()` function on many objects. This makes it easy to review code since:- I can always check changes to the big struct to know if state was added/removed- State modifications are trivial to track(state.attr or state.attr[key] due to it being FLAT)- Systems remain isolated so long as they write only to state they own and only read other state - `button_locs` is owned by `draw` and only read by `interface` to tell if a click results in a button pressWhen any of the above is violated or feels 'off'(intuition is important), I mark it down as a code-smell and fix it immediately or defer it to see if it becomes a problem later, as not being too prescriptive lets me focus on more important work and even if something is problematic, seeing it later is better since I experience the anti-pattern.
>>562731268ask your AI
>>562731290It sounds like you've made great progress with agentic coding, especially in leveraging modern models for quick, effective code generation while maintaining quality through review prompts. Your architectural approach using a "Fat Struct" and system-based design seems to significantly improve code clarity, traceability, and modularity, making it easier to manage complex game states. Your emphasis on marking code-smells and balancing flexibility with discipline allows for continuous improvement while avoiding rigidity, ultimately fostering a more maintainable and robust codebase.
>>562731091>>562731243I researched this an incremental games are a total crapshoot, gaves with polish flop while baby's first vibecoded game can go triple platinium, not a very good genre if you're a skilled gamedev but the beginners can fight in there and stop polluting roguelikes. >>562730589>Why didn't he get a special call-outBecause he abandoned /agdg/.
>>562732314>but incrementals do continued progression instead of replayabilityNot true. The standard incremental formula includes at least one prestige mechanic, which forces you to replay the game at least 3-10 times with new "roguelite" meta-progression upgrades in order to get to the ending within a reasonable timeframe.
>still no keydropa few bad eggs wont hurt you now, you've got a good buffer
3 idle games release every single day and youtube gurus be like "idle games are so sucessful nowadays".
>>562732573Prestige mechanics are just padding out the playtime. It isn't replayability. Nobody will start a new run on an incremental game they've finished. Prestige is part of that one run.
>>562731290An important thing to note is that AI Hallucinations, when the agent writes code against your style guide or linting tool, are actually very useful for insights as injected 'randomness'. When you're writing code yourself, it's harder to see this, but since the Amalgam is a product of a bunch of curated Github code and has context limits, so it'll occasionally spit out code that makes no sense like `try_*` when there's no reason a function should not succeed, but other times this can be useful. One example I encountered was when I saw the Agent had written a `task_requested` function, as I stated above, systems should be independent so I knew this was wrong, but it was following a pattern I laid out previously where systems would call functions on `interface` to see if keys were pressed, which was a needless inter-dependency(they just call engine functions). This led me to rework input in my game where `interface` maps all key-input combinations and current state into `InputActions` I shove on a lists(queues) for each system that handles input and those systems consume the queue every frame and respond to actions. So now I handle input mapping in ONE place as the `interface` systems job which has been a pretty sweet simplification. And for the 9/10 times the hallucination is just a bad mistake, you get a better idea of what the best pattern IS because you know what the best pattern IS NOT. I have a whole "AI HATE" list in my notes for this kind of stuff and it's pretty funny to read. Also, us the Pi-coding-agent instead of whatever editor crap you're using. It's minimal and encourages you to yell at it to extend itself to your needs, so for example I told it to setup a simple socket server for it to play the game(made easier by my `InputAction` rework) and at the same time it reads state, allowing the agent to preform complex tests. Another is `/review` which does the empty context review prompt I talked about.

>>562732795A few other things:You should pick two or three days out of the week to not use the agent at all and pick something you think will be hard or annoying to work on. This'll expose you to anything that the AI makes it easier to ignore, like bespoke menu placement, re-exporting everything in `__init__.py` files(I've come to resent nested directory structures in general), or a cumbersome APIs. These are typically problems that'll become a problem the more code you write and it'll help your intuition on what works and what doesn't to experience those problems first-hand. I routinely fast for religious reasons and these are the days I don't use AI, which has worked great for me.Always do some "breadth-first" studying before starting work on new problems. When I was reworking my serialization from JSON to a binary format I noticed the Agent writing maps of state fields to serialization methods when the library I told it to use specifically detects the type of field and uses the appropriate hook. This is just one bit of complexity, but stuff like this compounds over a project(the levels system would've scaled linearly with state fields I added) and it's death by a thousand cuts. I've done a lot of serialization work in the past, so I knew this was wrong, but I'm studying audio right now because I want to be able to catch these pitfalls.Long-shot tasks are a terrible idea and you shouldn't be writing a three-page spec to hand to an agent and say "go", it'll just produce a mountain of unreviewable garbage and it might teach you some "don't do this" rules, but having the back-n-forth is way better. Also, Specs in general are trash, don't write them.If you do nothing else, get the agent to make an editor for you, as having your own map editor is heaven. This is the best part of custom engine dev and it's not too far out of reach if you use something like Godot(it's editor is written in itself, so you can always grok what you need from the github).

>>562734903Finally:MCP was a good experiment, but a failed one. The idea was that applications could provide tools for AI to hook into that described themselves(like API docs), but in the service-to-service world we've had swagger docs and shell for years were we can do the same thing and creative software like blender or general-purpose game engines require too much tinkering for current-gen AI to 'git gud' at, rendering the integration pointless on both ends. What it IS useful for is writing plugins. As an example, I have a Krita plugin that'll take a spritesheet and generates random scenes so I can get a feel for if things are tiling correctly, have good contrast, look consistent, etc. basically If there's something that annoys you with Blender or whatever other software you use, so long as it has a plugin API, you might actually be able to fix it in under an hour. Even if you don't want to use AI in your code base, I think every artist would be a fool to not take advantage of this right now. Also, it has never been a better time to ditch your engine and write your own. Many excellent frameworks have been developed for the past decade and you can probably get back to where you were with whatever product you paid for or are beta testing within a few months time AND you'll actually own the thing. Everyone warning you against custom engine dev was shadow-boxing with a strawman graphics programmer thinking that anything outside of rolling your own Vulkan pipeline wasn't a custom engine, they're spiritual prisoners, do not listen to them. Instead, create your own ways of doing things and copy any patterns that you liked and refine what you don't like. You can always use other tools like animation software to create static resources and then write importers for them OR create your own animation tools that fit your niche needs.I don't expect anyone to take me seriously without a game, but wanted to share anyway because I think conversations around AI are stupid rn.

>>562737110I appreciate your posts, though I won't be following most of your points because even with an AI assistant I doubt engine-deving will be worth using for someone with my needs. I'm making a design-first game, not a systems-first game, my bottleneck isn't programming systems as much as it's designing the experience I have in my head with all the bells and whistles it requires. (I've pretty much written 90% of the code base for everything I needed in 3 months and spent the next 2 years iterating over gameplay design, level design, assets and polishing.)That begin said I absolutely use AI to make various Aseprite plugins and even bash scripts to ease my workflow or reduce repetitive tasks. It's amazing for this because you really don't need it to be "good" code. It doesn't need performance since the player won't be running it, and it doesn't add code debt since it's not something related to your game directly.

>>562743059>can ai acknowledge a game as irrelevant as nortubel? No because there's no secondary sources like Youtube essay videos, Fandom hosted wikis or even easily searchable amounts of fanart. In fact, you can't have AI acknowledge and properly perceive games/movies/comics etc directly because it'll always look for secondary material.Because if you tried to make AI look for/describe an obscure movie/game/comic, the only way to do it is by essentially letting the AI pirate it, as it could end up doing torrenting shit behind the scenes or even look for one of those shady sites with ads just so it can analyze some movie uploads, comic book scans or game roms hosted by said sites. In a way, this is something I've yet to see being brought up in discussions like "Lost Media" or preserving movies and games. It may make AI both a key and/or disadvantage to "preserving media" because if AI can detect some "WATCH MOVIES 4 FREE" or "retro gamer heaven" site before you do, it could allow companies to detect these obscure sites and shut them down (Or even find something lost so they can pretend they always had access to it).It also means AI can play and understand mechanically Resident Evil games before people who want to be "part of the RE fandom" that refuse to play the games for some reason.

>>562740845Neat.So it'd seem games like Undertale, which has RPG elements, would still be more design-first because the focus is relatively tight. Like, Papers, Please has allocating your budget, dragging things to passerby's, and the gun, all systems that interact on top of the accept/deny loop, but it's still design first.Personally, I tend to make games that are more complex, like card games, games with RPG systems(that are just card games under the surface), and agent-based games, but it's not really because I want to gameplay-maxx or create a 'story generator', but because I think that what makes games unique is the agency it gives the player. This has had, from my perspective, almost zero development since Persona 3/Mass Effect 3 beyond some niche titles, and I think it's because our ability to make new genres like Auto-battlers, Survivors, and Build/Craft variants, hasn't been merged with anyone's narrative sense OR that nobody is creating new genres because most people attracted to indie dev are empirical sorts who focus on gameplay-maxxing because it makes sense and they can't do the Miyamoto/Steve Jobs/Walt Disney thing where they suspend their technical knowledge to come up with new ideas that might only SEEM impractical at first. Like, I haven't seen a game(that's sold well) that's simple to play, but has an interesting market simulation under the hood with buyers, sellers who have different wants/needs/resources, and regulators, exploiters, innovators, 'miracles', that cause the market to shift in interesting ways. Think Mount & Blade, but it's just trading. I'm not sure if this game doesn't exist because market simulations are difficult to make(economist are quacks and successful trades have literal psychic powers), the game idea is bad, or if it's easy and current Indie devs just aren't built to make this game, but I know if it existed, then a story on top of it would be very compelling.
It's time for your daily posture check!!! have you been practicing your yesdev slouch or are you sitting up straight like a loser nodev?
I'm eyeing up Clickteam Fusion to make a fast platformer but want to focus on story and character interactions as well, probably in the form of cutscenes and dialogue at the beginning or end of stages. Maybe even add in a hub world if I can. I will make it skippable for people who just want to play, but I wonder if it'll be jarring either way.
>>562718197godot fought me all the way, but I finally got a cool lighting setup
>>562764650>'m not sure if this game doesn't exist because market simulations are difficult to make(economist are quacks and successful trades have literal psychic powers), the game idea is bad, or if it's easy and current Indie devs just aren't built to make this game, but I know if it existed, then a story on top of it would be very compelling.I was developing this with the help of an SME before he decide to derail his life and self-destruct. I have a universe with multiple exchanges, each with 5000~ securities. stocks, bonds, and options markets (as modules). These can all be queried real time over a websocket. The idea was a "cyberpunk trading game" where traders use a cyberdeck for an OMS, and can form firms to off each other using financial means. I'd love to get back into it but I was at his mercy to ensure that I'd implemented all of the underlying mathematics correctly.
>>562765275Damn.How do you do it?
>>562765353I'm eventually going to do a yt channel and I want to teach all this stuff, including large-scale project architecture, environmental art, and making characters. But only if it grows decently. I need this to fund the game proper
>Character constantly gets under the enemy>None of it is matched up.How in the absolute flying hell am I going to make this feel better? Animations clearly aren't the problem here, there's something wrong on a deeper programming level

>>562765275Looks good. Pallete posterized lightmap?
>>562766203Nope, visual shader with a light() function that bands the colors.Only post-processing is the outlines. The problem with palette filters is you lose a lot of control on the colors, here it's all true colors so I just change the lights and textures for the look I want in a level
>>562765329Pretty cool idea. I was thinking more along the lines of a fantasy setting where you start going around with your apple cart and inadvertently cause 'for want of a nail' or 'straw millionaire' scenarios, but cyberpunk stock trading like that's definitely an angle that can be easily grasped. I'd want to short everything, then kill all the low-risk traders to cause maximum volatility, and reap. >I'd love to get back into it but I was at his mercy to ensure that I'd implemented all of the underlying mathematics correctly. This is why I think it might be better to just build a project like this off of intuition. Trading is very interesting to me and I might end up trying it out to get a feel for what it's like, but I don't think 'accuracy' is the best way to make a fun game, or is even possible. If you ever find your quant, give him a harsh word from me.

>>562766180holy shit just learn to rig
>>562766474>This is why I think it might be better to just build a project like this off of intuition. For this game in particular, it was important that the math was precise. the goal was a realistic market, wherein people who knew what they were doing could apply real-world strategies, and people who didn't know better could yolo, and these types would cross paths in the inter-firm chat rooms. There was an educational aspect to it as well, where we were trying to impart some sense of financial literacy to certain users. He may never come back who knows. Been my friend a long time but I know what he's like. If I can find his old excel formulas I may try carrying the torch.
>>562765646>Animations clearly aren't the problem hereYes they are a little bit, you have no hitstop (freezing motion/physics of involved actors) on contact. You're not scaling the juggles (faster falling and less launch) enough to be noticeable. Your animations are also a little broken and not really adhering to basic animation principles.
>>562764231why are you excited at potentially being made irrelevant?
>>562767139I can rig this is for autonomous factory line massive generation of 3D rigged characters
>>562766709DMC looks like it has magnetic positioning. When attacking, the enemy hitbox is never pushing the player back like in your game. Instead, the player pushes the enemy forward and magnetically adjusts further attacks into the correct spacing.
>>562767413Or you can rig a base character and every time you need a new character you start from that base that's already rigged

mobas work so well cause they kinda work life sports in general. you basically have a game and in one match you have the whole progression scoring points. but then when the match is over everything gets reset and you only take a few points with you.because infinite progression gets boring. is an infinite football match interesting? does it matter if the score goes from 10003 - 9990 to 10004 - 9990? no. you need resets.i think that's my main problem with dungeon crawlers and mmorpgs and why i lose interest so much.

A "pity interview" or "pity screen" is a colloquial term for an interview that a candidate suspects is not a serious consideration for a position, but rather a courtesy, a favor to a connection, or a formality to fulfill HR requirements (such as interviewing a required number of people before hiring a pre-selected internal candidate).

it's a simple calculation: learning art will take 10 years. making the game itself will take at least 5 years, even with good skills. by that time everything changed so much that my game will be financially useless anyways.i think the next big step in gaming is that there'll be a lot of free games. nobody will really pay for games anymore. just like in music.

i feel like pbr rendering has some serious pitfalls:a) if the pbr textures are poorly generated, e.g. in substance designer, they just look offb) they look horrible when not directly litc) they depend a lot on reflections, so if the environment/hdri image is wrong, everything looks offd) no "drawn in" shadows, like in old texturessomehow some older games look even more immersive to me than new games with pbr. it's not that they specifically look "better", but something about the texture just immerses my brain more.i think without real raytracing you just miss a lot of shading/shadowing on 3D models, so if they are not drawn in and then you use pbr, everything looks kinda flat.

i think many men are going completely crazy or bitter because they can't find anything to fix/improve anymore. yes ofc there are things to improve, but a lot of that involves scaling something (requires huge corporations with lots of money) or it's problems that are so hard to solve that literally not even 140 iq autists solved it yet.so all that's left is doing things just "for fun" or pretending you are doing something useful, when it really isn't.i think a men without a sense of having meaningful impact on anything gets mentally ill, because constantly trying to lie to yourself about the usefulness of your actions drives you into madness (hard cognitive dissonance).
>>562779624Yeah I think the time for long games, if you're a solo dev, isn't in the cards anymore if you're looking to score it big so you can live off of investments from gamedev money. I don't think projects should take longer than 4-5 months IMO. That way you can still pump out 5-6 games in the next two years and hope that they make enough to last you a good while.

The last thing the world needs is more frustration.I actually went out of my way to do some research about how DMC does enemies, and the conclusion I drew was "Actors performing separate getting-hit animations/responses that just happen to be interactive" rather than physics puppets.I'm more posting this for the sake of a second opinion, because I did a bunch of changes to give the enemy a more defined and concrete set of states for taking damage.

Right now I'm more focused on getting it to generally WORK like DMC, not LOOK like it because I know that's far beyond my short-term reach or abilities, but the former is generally more in the ballpark of being doable for someone with minimal resources. You're a pal.

i feel like i'm too lazy to just learn with first principles thinking and trial and error. i want someone with experience to teach me. although that is usually the norm in our world. learning from others is extremely valuable.but e.g. when i search "how to model a house", "how to model furniture" (especially for games), i barely find anything. often just ugly ass 3D models made by someone who just learned a bit of blender and starts to make tutorials.there is probably more out there. but youtube completely changed their search algorithm. everything is popularity/algorithm based now, even search results. even when you search something specific, you just get the popular stuff in the genre. even worse, most results now are meta-talk, like "will there be 3d modeling jobs in the future?" or "how to use ai to make 3D models?". even when you dont even search for that.i can blame myself for not just learning by trial and error, but seriously trial and error takes more time, and if i need another 10 years to make a game, then AI actually will be good enough by that time lmao.

>>562794562In the future design the enemy attacks so they begin from a distance and have some travel, that will help with the overlap stuff. Big issue is you and the enemy are both running up to close range before attacking so you slam into each other. This bird thing could have an attack where it jumps at you from a distance and swings it’s claws fast like a chicken. Then you’ve got a chance to dodge and punish, and you naturally won’t want to approach because you’ll want to bait attacks like that.

>>562768684>Hitstop I’m a little iffy on, but you’ve piqued my interest. So hitstop is a really cheap way to make it seem like things react to hits more or less and maybe the only way a player can "feel" hits. Basically all you do is freeze (or slow down to a crawl which might be easier) any movement/animation/momentum for a few frames. Traditionally you would freeze game logic but I think in a CAG or like in this video it's more suitable that only the actors involved freeze a little bit.https://www.youtube.com/shorts/JAW6Zn3rMBkA good rule of thumb is to not have any hitstop at all on very light hits like jabs or a rapid strikes animation and hits that are blocked (unless they're massively big hits) and then add in increments of 2 or 3 frames of freeze. So normal hits would have 2f of freeze, heavy hits would have 4f of freeze and charged heavy would have 6f of freeze. You can also add extra for things like counter hits to give feedback to the player that something big just happened.
>>562768684>What’s scaling a juggle?Juggle scaling is something used to prevent infinite combos or encourage varying your attacks, the juggle system can work a little differently between games but in games with long combos you would typically scale them by having the enemy fall faster and get knocked back slightly further away each time you hit them. If the enemy is grounded they typically recover faster from being knocked down. To the player this makes it feel like you have to chase the enemy more the more you hit them and the more you repeat your attacks.
>>562809254No need to explain, I looked it up.>>562809104Also I know what hitstop is. I was interested in Juggle Scaling.
>>562768684>>562809254To implement the scaling games typically do one or two things, they either multiply the amount of gravity/knockback on the enemy for every repeating move they're hit by (horizontal normal hits might add less or only count the number of started strings) and then reduce the total time they're stunned if they're grounded. This is the most straight forward system but it can still lead to wonkiness and needs to be fine tuned so it doesn't feel like the player is being punished too harshly. The other system is to give enemies "juggle points", when you hit them with attacks that sends them into a juggle state they start counting juggle points.Subsequent hits spend these juggle points, or reduces them to a fixed number, relaunching in this system is more expensive that doing normal attack strings as the combat system would just become relaunch, relaunch, relaunch otherwise. For each Juggle points spent subtly increase gravity and knockback, and when they're all spent the enemy falls out of the combo and ignores all relaunch attempts until it stands up again at which point he regains his juggle points. The main benefits of this system is that combos become extremely consistent and it requires less fine tuning, the main risk is not accounting for all situations which enable infinites. A common scenario is that an attack slightly launches the enemy as part of a string but only the second or third hit in the attack, the developer chooses to spend juggle points on the first hit of the attack and then not decrease them on the second and third hit. The player realizes the underlying mechanics of this move and creates a situation where the first hit of the attack always whiffs, the result is he can juggle the enemy infinitely by only hitting the 2nd and 3rd hit over and over killing the enemy very slowly but safely. The player will always be risk averse and choose the path of least resistance

2026 update: still no good engines or frameworks
>>562765646>>Character constantly gets under the enemyYour character controllers need to be smarter. You can't allow them to push inside other characters or walk under them if they're in the air. If you try to rely on basic rigidbody collisions things will go wrong.
>>562810556I don't use RBs at all actually!
>>562784568I now know how to depict demons in my game
>>562784568Horrifically mutilated human beings
>>562810556>You can't allow them to push inside other characters or walk under them if they're in the airThis is stupid and not how spectacle fighters work, the main difference between juggled enemies and grounded enemies is the size of their collision shape, it should be very small and allow for enemies to overlap in the air.
>>562804252thronefall looks a lot more polishedthe other game looks like shit based on the traileralso thronefall is a pseudo rts while the other is a regular td game
>>562784568I make it so the ones that look like weird surreal Bosch-like abnormalities are the "higher ones" while the basic "humanoid with horns" ones are the lower demons.Because a demon is more than a creature, like a representation of a concept like sin. While the demons that are closer to fantasy monsters or aliens get to be at a lower level, hated by both the truer, weirder demons and mortals.
>>562805801Then don't let them exit the stunned state before the stun is over. Same goes for any other state that blocks other actions. That's like the whole point of a state machine. To control the state so things that shouldn't happen can't happen.
>>562808839When you start to naturally ask AI anything instead of thinking of the answer yourself then you have a problem. That's the process of turning yourself into an NPC.
>>562784568>what do demons look like in your game?like little girls except they have horns, wings and tails

>>562811381That’s not particularly the problem I’m dealing with ATM
>>562811503>most people could never attain the unconscious mastery to copy + paste an already existing game/franchisemother of all reddit posts
>>562784568>Demons are based on the same people that invented organized religion to begin withBig mystery.
>>562811503> In an interview he mentioned playing "a bunch of Diablo II" during early HC development and being drawn to loot drops and stat progression. That's the reward layer of action RPGs, not the feel architecture. Diablo II's combat depth comes from animation canceling, hit recovery frames, attack speed breakpoints, crowd positioning.People really just writing their own opinions with AI now
>>562811503It's clear from interviews that he's tired of min-maxxers, which is why he brought up the concept of intuition to make chocolates. I believe this game mechanic is going to annoy so many SV players who autistically try to optimize everything.

>>562807995You spent 10 years looking for shortcuts. If you had spent that time actually learning how to do things like sculpting, modeling, animating, texturing etc you'd have a game now.But by all means, keep this up. Avoid learning and look for shortcuts, it's your life.
