The first two maps of VoE are much better than any map from SotO or JW, and apart from EoD maps having decent metas, better than those as well. The story is decently interesting too, at least by GW2 standards.

There's still room for them to fuck it up if the patch maps/story are bad, they literally haven't had a good conclusion to anything since, and the first VoE patch decided to forego all actual content to roll out raid and fashion features which they also half-assed and botched the fashion parts, so it's genuinely hard to say whether things are looking up or down.

Switching to Seraph stats before heading to Draconis Mons was the best move ever.
This place is empty as shit so I keep having to solo champions that do shit like stack 10-20 poison on you in 2 seconds or leap-attack you but track you through your dodge roll to still land on top of you.
I hear a "henge" and "aurora", whatever those are, are such atrocious grinds that most people swear off Draconis Mons forever after finishing them, and that's why the map is empty and nobody bothers helping you when they pass. Everyone is on hour 100 in the zone and sick to death of it.

Ever since I spilled coffee on my pc tower it's been noticeably slower and I get constant heavy FPS drops whenever I play GW2 to the point where it's unplayable. It's not a complete loss because the pc is a 10 year old clunker and I was planning on upgrading anyway but now with all the AI shit going on and prices going through the roof my two options are buying overpriced used parts or wait until this whole thing boils over and prices return to somewhat reasonable (who fucking knows when that will be). Honestly, maps are your typical open barren sandbox that they've decided to make since POF, the metas are boring and localized with gigantic HP sponges and I'd wager they'll be dead by the time of the next expansion, the elite specs are a mixed bag and most people have already gone back to old ones since they're no longer stupidly overpowered, the story so far isn't bad but I expect it to flop like usual. qTroub and boonChrono because Mesmer is getting love taps and both of them look like they're coming out as above-average for the new normal of boonDPS while having all the usual advantages of Mesmer.

I'll probably play Quick Hare Evoker as a substitute for qCata getting dumpstered since it's pretty similar and I like the playstyle, and then if Conduit doesn't get further nerfs to the Scepter/GS build then I'll play that to still be overpowered.

I've only played the base game, HoT, and LWS3 so far. PoF is next.
Base Tyria maps were unbelievably based, aside from the Orr maps, which were 50% shit because of how maze-like they were.
HoT maps were all trash aside from maybe Auric Basin. If the player can't pick a destination and navigate to it without being forced to take a convoluted, unintuitive path to get there, it's shit.
LWS3 maps are a mixed bag.

Mostly decent, but the air segment sucks with a glider.

Mostly good, but fuck that hermit achievements.

Absolutely based. Could use another waypoint or two, but other than that, it's a fun, cozy map. The Bitter Cold area is ass with the retarded high-density spawns but you only have to go there like twice, ever.

I was fucking devastated that they drained the lake and made it a warzone. I was expecting a cozy Krytan countryside and instead I got kicked in the dick by White Mantle on 30s respawn timers and tons of group events that cannot be completed because nobody fucking plays this map anymore. Despite all of that, the map itself is decent because you can actually go where you want to go without problems. Unless you want to go up the centaur camp to the broken tower. Then you're fucked.

The concept is really cool but the actual map is convoluted dogshit that's impossible to navigate, nobody does any of the events, and there's a lot of empty space all over the map for some reason.

I don't like the LWS3 maps at all. They're all way too small. In particular Bitterfrost serves no purpose other than a winterberry farm. Without the winterberries the map would be dead. Lake Doric is kinda okay. In Ember Bay half of the map is a jumping puzzle, WTF? And the puzzle isn't really about jumping but about surviving multiple stacks of burning from the volcano.

I'd rework it completely. Add notches like necro spear. 3 skills to build up, 1 utility, 1 that powers up the more you have.
Add a heat mechanic from holosmith. Skills besides 1 have no cooldown initially, but get much increased effects with heat. The more of the same skill you use the faster the heat grows, so better to cycle them sometimes. Bigger heat means boosted stats. But if you blow out you are forced into next element, current gets a increased cooldown.
Add a universal beam tether attack. It sticks to a target, hitting it with skills pulses a bigger dmg through the beam. Swapping to another element releases a huge dmg wave based on how many attacks you did on tethered target. Cycle through every element without breaking connection to turn it into a disintegrate beam. Guess this is to similar to hammer orbs tho.
Add a Magicka or Nine from Blazblue like element combo for spells. Fill 3-5 slots and special spell will be available, from a list of like 10+ possible.
Without adding 'crazy' separate mechanics, give each element an aoe with 3 charges and combo potential. Landing a skill in that well gives a boost to the skill, increases well duration, magnitude or size. You can mix and match well + spell elements for special buffs.

Compared to real maps, yeah, they're small and don't have a lot to do. But I'm comparing them to Dry Top and Silverwastes, the previous small LWS maps. Dry Top is terrible, while Silverwastes is pretty good. So most of the LWS3 maps fall between them in score.
On a scale of Silverwastes to Dry Top (best to worst):

Tons of Orr maps have shit you can't reach unless you double back, climb a ledge, do a mini-JP, then double back again to get a vista or something. Some of the bosses down inside the buildings are hard to find. Sometimes, if you're trying to get somewhere, you find out it's up on a temple platform while you're down in the water, or that it's down in a cave while you're up on a cliff.

Many such cases. But really, it's pretty 50/50 or even 70/30 with Orr. The maps will be nice while you're moving from area to area, then some areas are just pains in the ass.

I played back at launch, too, so I remember Orr being much worse before we had mount. Constantly getting slows down by Risen because you have to run past them all. I played Shortbow Thief back then entirely to just spam the shadowstep arrow to skip all the mobs.

Except that hasn't happened in the 10 years the map has been out. People grind out the events all the time. The noobies always do it because its narratively engaging and fun to do so. Quite literally the story engages you to try to rally the Pact survivors. Yes, I have an alt parked at matriarch. I also have done those events hundreds of times because its just fun. The convoluted nature of the map is what causes you to end up playing it for dozens or even hundreds of hours instead of Gandarren plains where you just speed run all the POI and do the 3 hearts and never go there ever fucking again. Verdant Brink literally has one of the highest player populations in the game, its more than the first map of the new expac most of the time.

HoT maps have great longevity, although I think the introduction of skyscales has made them much better to navigate. I hated those maps too when I first got there with just the base glider, especially since keeping up with events was impossible as everyone else already had their skyscale or at least griffin. Lws3 maps really are ass tho, they're both difficult to navigate like HoT and very empty like PoF maps.

I JUST did this content (mostly) for the first time ever.
I promise you, from firsthand experience, most camps are done by 0 to 2 people and if you play "right" and try to secure camps and then go to the canopy, you will likely miss at least one boss because of all the leeches burning down Matriarch in 60 seconds. If you're lucky, people are actually doing the other bosses and you can try to get to them, even if by slowly gliding around the canopy while everyone else screams by on a flying mount, but more often than not, nobody is doing the other bosses so you're either soloing them or waiting for someone else to show up so you can duo them.

And you're fucked if you don't realize that some of the bosses need masteries, like the axemaster requiring stealth detection.

This is what I expect to be the case, because every time I unlocked an improvement for gliding, the maps got more bearable. Shit's atrocious when you lose your glider when running out of stamina, can't catch ley lines, etc. So I bet getting a flying mount makes them even better.
I just think a map that requires gameplay benefits from 5+ years into the future shouldn't be judged based on how good they are with content from the future. I think they should mostly be judged by their own time periods.

Also, this reminds me, why did they decide to make every map just this big barren sandbox after PoF. The base game maps are packed with shit everywhere, HoT as well, LWS3 also ain't too bad, but once they added mounts they just spread everything out so much. Your mount basically is a necessity to cover a bunch of useless empty terrain, metas are localized and don't touch most of the map, barely any waypoints etc. Just compare dragon's stand to jade sea, one is a properly constructed meta map with paths and shit everywhere, the other this barren wasteland of green vomit.
I guess when you have mounts that means the distance between everything should be greater so mounts effectively do jack shit.
