Some people really need to figure out that you can dislike stuff without making it part of your personality. You don't have to go out of your way to remind everyone every time it comes up, and argue with anyone who does like it.

As long as no one makes any negative or neutral remarks about Nomura, Kitase, Hamaguchi, Toriyama, Matsuno, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy XIII, Lightning, Remake, Tactics, E33, Duellum, Kastaclsym, or Sebbywebz we will be fine.

As long as no one makes any positive or neutral remarks about XIV, XVI, Yoshida, CS3, Spirits Within, or Sakaguchi we will be fine.

Take care to not agree with anyone's /ffg/ approved positive or negative opinions too much. Agreeing with someone can come off as disingenuous, but only when certain posts or certain ideas are agreed with, not others. Also remember that if you disobey any of the rules, this automatically puts you into the opposing category of posters. There are no exceptions. These are the rules.

I'm trying to get into Final Fantasy and my autism is triggering hard with what versions of 1-6 to play
Obviously the pixel remaster but i don't know if to play the 3D remakes of 3 and 4, they look so beautiful and i like that it gives 3 more story and actual characters.

But at same time, Dissidia looks cool and it has cool designs for each character so i'll use mods to have those designs in each game, and there's the protagonist of FF3 being some blond red boy instead of the ugly white haired femboy from the 3D remake which makes me think better to play the FF3 Pixel Remaster without that white haired femboy.
Also why Bartz looks so hideous in Dissidia, ugh Amano art is literally all HRT shit i hate it.

So FF3 remake or remaster?
>>
>>562868128
Dunno for 3, but the 3D Remake of IV is good enough that you can play it after playing the Pixel Remaster if you really liked it. It feels like a Director's Cute, or a Complete Edition.
>>
>>562868128
I think the Pixel Remaster of III is the best way to play it, but I think the 3D version of IV is the best way to play it. Though I will say, the 3D version is a lot slower to play through, so if you just want to play the game then maybe do the Pixel Remaster, and if you end up liking it you can to a 3D playthrough, but then that's asking a lot and you might never actually do a 3D playthrough which is totally understandable.

I don't mind about difficulty though i read some things that seem shitty for both, like how Onion knight was reduced to a side quest in the 3D remake.

And if i play a 3D remake of 4 then i'll have to play 3D remake of 3! I can't just pick one remake and reject the other that's called hypocrisy

>And if i play a 3D remake of 4 then i'll have to play 3D remake of 3! I can't just pick one remake and reject the other that's called hypocrisy
I just don't think the 3D Remake of III is good. I don't really think anything positive gets added by giving each party member a canon name and personality, and the Pixel Remaster is the only one that lets you switch jobs without being penalized in some way.

Holy poor taste Batman.
Anyways, DS 3 is more interesting from a gameplay perspective because it rebalances the jobs, but it's much harder and you kind of have to play by its rules in that you're expected to assign characters to particular roles and then give them jobs based on those roles.
The remake has some more plot and characterizations but it mostly just serves to tighten up the narrative a little bit unless you look up all the unused text strings in the DS version's code. I personally prefer the remake, but the PR is definitely easier and more convenient to play.
>there's the protagonist of FF3 being some blond red boy
Onion Knight is functionally an OC. He's based on the Onion Knights from the original/PR, but they didn't really have personality to begin with. Luneth is vaguely based on the character that shows up on the boxart (whose outfit Onion Knight usually has an alt).

Can someone please explain to me the state of the Final Fantasy 7 remake?
So there's part 1... for 60 usd, and part 2... for 60 usd... and it's nto even finished yet, there might be a part 3 and 4. So in total it's a 300 USD remake...?
And not just that but there's also a psp FF 7 prequel... that they also made a remake of in the same engine? So need to add up those 60 usd too?
>>
>>562892390
There's FF VII Remake, who is Part 1, and FFVII Rebirth, who is Part 2.
>>
>>562892390
Each part has been expanded to the size of a full-length JRPG. I recommend playing the GOAT video game franchise Trails instead.
>>
>>562892390
There's Part 1 (covers Midgar) and Part 2 (covers everything up to Aerith dying). Part 3 is expected to cover the endgame.
Crisis Core Reunion, to my understanding, is mostly a remaster rather than a large-scale remake. It makes some gameplay tweaks but is overall the same game on PSP whereas the remake series is a complete reimagining/potential sequel.

>>562902629
I am the person who complained about the retarded sheathing and unsheathing of weapons in XI, and yes, XII is basically just a better, more streamlined, actually playable version of XI.

Oh another thing that's annoying in XI. There are many skills that will just fucking lock you in place, like you can't do anything at all while the skill is happening. For example, the Dancer skill that makes you run faster. It lasts like 2 minutes or something, I forget, and you spend I swear to got like 10 seconds of it animation locked into the casting animation and you cannot move at all... but you can download a cheaty plugin that makes it so you aren't animation locked, and honestly that is the only fucking way that you can possibly play XI. You have to download actual cheaty shit to make the game even remotely playable.
>>
>>562902991
...ha. I mean, I started XII and it's got some issues, but I found it tolerable. But here you tell me that XI was even worse, I can see how it'd grind someone's patience.
>>
I just started playing FFV and I main Krile on Dissidia.
>>
>>562903216
If XI played like XII, I probably wouldn't complain about XI's systems. XII is basically just the offline, streamlined, actually playable version of XI. Or, the roguelike browser version of XI is also playable. But real XI does not play anything like that. Even if you download a million mods, it still wont play as smoothly as the browser roguelike version of XI.
>>
>>562903372
I literally cannot imagine how bad XI must be.
...I'll have to try it. Just out of morbid curiosity.
>>
>>562903441
I mean, yeah. I really wanted to play XI, and even still it was a chore. The free trial is only like 2 weeks or something, and you can convert it to the real game. I recommend playing the free trial for a few days before buying the game, because I seriously spent like I don't even know, maybe like 3-5 days just figuring out what the fuck the game does, because god damn.

>>
>>562904410
I'm not a zoomer and I don't have ADHD. XI might just be the single most outdated and archaic game in existence. You'd have to find an obscure text-based adventure where it only accepts certain cryptic text commands in order to advance in order to find something more archaic than XI. The original Dragon Quest (/Dragon Warrior) is less archaic than XI is. There is no reason for XI to be so unfriendly to the player either, because you can still play PSO in 2026 and everything is intuitive and makes sense, and that game came out on Dreamcast in 2000/2001.

As long as the games are still releasing on PC (they have been, will be, and are) I don't think anyone should give a shit about what the console kiddies are doing. Honestly I don't even think Nintendo is going to help that much with sales if they feel the need to run "(#ad)" campaigns on Twitter telling everyone how "sold out everywhere" Remake was (this amounted to ~30k copies in Japan, no idea US numbers)

It's pretty lame, especially given today's social climate. She's basically a feminist tentacle summoner / body mod. The men in her village abused the women to the point that the average life expectancy of women was ~20 years old while the men lived to be 50+, and this was her village's culture, and the King wouldn't help them because this was deemed to just be their culture or some shit and they didn't want to interfere with it, so she learned tentacle magic and taught it to the women in the village and eventually all the women killed all the men in an (allegedly) purely retaliatory manner, and this was done slowly over time, not all at once as a massacre. However, she claims she can hear the voices of the oppressed and she wants to spread knowledge of tentacle magic to all the other oppressed women of the world. There is another girl who also looks kinda like Rydia but not nearly as much, and although "Rydia" helped her by teacher her tentacle magic and allowing her to kill her abusers, she doesn't want the tentacle magic to be spread worldwide, because she realizes that this would most likely just flip the balance of power so that the women of the world are the abusers and the men are the abused.

I used to argue in favor of the exclusivity deals so hard. It just came naturally. When SE are under attack, I automatically go into defence. So when others said the exclusivity deals were bad, I said they were good, and "proved" it with facts, citing SEs own financial earnings reports. I guess I was wrong, but I can admit that as a grown and secure man. The "doomers" (as I liked to call them) were right all along.

I do still think it's hilariously ironic that VIIR's biggest defender(s) are inadvertently, in retrospect, its biggest shitposters because all of their defenses ended up being wrong and all of the so-called "doomers" were simply correct and maybe it was the "doomers" who were proven to be the true fans all along.

Nomura is responsible for everything that is wrong with modern Final Fantasy and with Square Enix.
He is not responsible for anything besides Kingdom Hearts.
His character designs can stay. They're mostly fine even if he just keeps making "the same" characters over and over again. That's really the issue with Nomura - he was a character designer who acquired tenure after the Square Enix merger and was subsequently given too much agency or power without anyone above him keeping his retardation in check.

Look, little guy, I just know that I got called a doomer secondary who didn't even play Remake when I said that obviously the Whispers were going to come back in Rebirth because there's zero chance that they invented a plot device and went out of their way to demonstrate its power only for it to disappear after the first of three games. I'm not sucking anyone's dick, I'm describing my personal experience interacting with 4chan's VIIRgins.

>this fake ass shit
That's the thing. It's not fake. I wish it was, but it's not. I was only proven to be correct and vindicated by Rebirth, and all of the VIIRgins (or, probably just one guy) who argued for years in defense of the Remake were the ones who were proven to be the doomer shitposters, since they called people doomer secondaries who didn't play or understand Remake, when in actuality the people they said that to were simply correct, while the defenders are the ones who have continually been proven incorrect.

This even still continues today. Remember the whole "organic Masamune" thing? VIIR's biggest defenders are continually proven to inadvertently be VIIR's biggest shitposters by virtue of defending it from things that turn out to simply be true.

OO was too generous to make any money (even though it still made decent enough money until they implemented the paid gem cap in JP that made all the spenders quit), but it had males and it did fine. Most Final Fantasy characters are male, I think. That's just how it goes. It's not like your typical post-Genshin gacha game where the men have bulge jiggle physics and an ass bigger than all the girls, while the girls have censored uniboob, spats, and a flat ass. People are just gonna roll for who is good or for which characters they already like. They aren't inventing homos out of thin air.
>>
>>562959712
No one even said anything bad about 7R though. The only comment has been about how VIIR's biggest defender has historically been wrong about every single thing, defending the game from "doomers" who were simply proven to be correct.

Unless you're saying that people arguing in favor of console exclusivity while also arguing against Whispers returning in Rebirth or the Masamune having an organic quality to it are the shitposters who are deranged and who hate VIIR. In which case, I'd agree with you; they do continue to be wrong about literally everything despite trying their damndest to defend it.

>ignore the goated story?
There's a not-insignificant number of people who, especially after having played FF4, 6, and 7, think that a story is only good if it's character driven. They need character drama to happen in lockstep with every plot point, otherwise they feel nothing, because there's no trail of breadcrumbs and flashy action setpieces intertwining with each character moment to get them to care about it by proxy.

FFV's drama is much more simple. The plot of Exdeath terrorizing the world is really only a catalyst and backdrop on which a story of heroes becoming family is painted. All of the game's most powerful scenes end up being the small moments where characters simply show empathy and compassion toward one another. But if you take the time to get invested, you'll realize how tightly that story is told, and how poetic many of the game's moments are.

Also, I hope you're not baiting/pretending to be the FFV schizo. Because I'M the FFV Schizo.

>But there is some character drama in the game.
Yeah, but it's not like in more melodramatic games like FF4 where the drama is that Cecil has some secret legacy, and there's a mystery about his lineage, and Golbez turns out to be his brother, or like in 7 where Cloud thinks he's a Sephiroth clone and loses his brain. Instead it's just really simple shit like characters being afraid of becoming alone, which requires willing investment and empathy on the part of the player.

Like, yeah, I cared when each of the dawn warriors died, too. Each time I play the game, the entirety of Galuf's role gets to me more. It's super easy to say that his amnesia is just a contrivance to delay Exdeath's reveal until the game is ready for it, but also his amnesia is kind of necessary for him to bond with the new generation on equal footing, and to give him a chance to forget all the tragedy he's dealing with. Getting old means watching your friends die.

>I think the gameplay is a bit too....restrictive actually lol. Not sure if that's the right way to say it but only one slot for action + bonus doesn't seem like enough and there's too many ways to cheese the game where you don't really need to engage with the system.
If you're into romhacking, you should try FFVR "Clean Edition". It's based on a Japanese fan-made romhack from many years ago that boosts the difficulty a lot and adds a bunch of enemies/bosses from NES and SNES era FF games, as well as offering optional features like more custom ability slots on jobs. Personally, I think only one free slot for abilities outside of Freelancer/Mime is a good balance, but I can see how you might want more room to play around.
>>
>>562965301
Two symptoms, the first is that people have more often than not a shallow way of interacting with narratives and tend to miss the forest for the trees. V has "on paper" a simpler and lighthearted plot than IV which is why it's often ridiculed, but tend to not really engage with how the plots actually play out in terms of pacing, setpieces and character dynamics, which V does excellently, and is probably the first FF where you can tell the team had finally gotten the hang out of narration writing.
The second, somewhat more lingering, is that most of the FF fanbase hasn't played more than 2-3 games which often lead to games having a dedicated urban legend about it which is never really disproven because the people who could actually disprove it are pretty insignificant in the larger FF fandom. V is not really the only victim of this, but its reputation as the "lighthearted FF game with no plot" is one of those things that get repeated and become common knowledge regardless of validity.

>How would you design a FFV remake?
First and foremost would be to make all the cinematics focus on the bonding between the main characters. I'd probably even take some pages from FFXV's book, and include stuff like camping/fishing/cooking to really drive home the comfy feels of four friends being on an adventure. I'd make it so that some areas have campsites that are only accessible by certain vehicles/mounts and use them as bait to lure players toward good optional cutscenes, as well as things like treasure and blue magic.

I might add new jobs, but what I'd really like to see is more depth in each job. I'd add hidden guilds for each job class around the world that you can find and engage with for quests to unlock new abilities, equipment, and limit break-esque super attacks for each job. It might also be nice to take inspiration from Chrono Trigger and give characters "dual/triple/quadra techs", especially given how strong their personalities are and how important their relationships to each other are. Like, Bartz and Faris would 100% have some kind of cross-slash attack with each other. Faris and Lenna would have a combo Syldra/Wind Drake summon that heals and hurts at the same time. There's tons of possibility.

Also, I'd follow up on FFXV's concept that Omega was a robot intended to hunt Eidolons, and make Shinryu a summon you can attain.
>>
FFV was the only FF game I played where I was actually craving more of it, not because the game felt incomplete but because I wasn't done with the world, setting and characters just yet. fucking love that game.

>I had more emotions in this game everytime a dawn warrior died
For reals, though, Zeza's death hits me harder every time I play. You could argue he's a "nothing character" that gets introduced only a couple of hours before he dies, but that's ignoring a lot of the really good development they do during that short time:
>the way he and Galuf greet each other like old friends, and laugh in unison over how they both dislike the title of "king"
>the way they circle around eachother and square off once the ambush on the ship starts, like old war buddies
>the chatty banter they have
>all of Zeza's soldiers/subjects praising him non-stop
if you take the time to talk to NPCs and treat them like real people, you get so much more out of this game.

One thing that absolutely always gets me is Galuf just laying awake in the dark room in the submarine after Zeza sacrifices himself. It fucking crushes me. Dude gets his memory back just in time for everything to go to shit and for all his friends to die.

Oh, also, your underwater airship hangar would be turned into a customizable base where each character has their own quarters that you can decorate with optional, collectible souveniers from every place you visit.

Arguably, one of FFV's only flaws is that it was a JRPG made in 1992 where things like re-using town themes and tilesets was just the norm, so it results in all of the world's locations feeling a bit "samey", even though each town has a good bit of identity on paper. I think there's a lot of potential in giving each area its own flavor, especially the ones in Galuf's world. The notion that the planet was literally split into two separate worlds that somehow retained the exact same architecture and vibes is kind of a missed opportunity, but it's also the kind of thing they didn't really have the time or manpower to do back then.

>Dude gets his memory back just in time for everything to go to shit and for all his friends to die.
IMO, one of the most poetic moments in the game is the way Galuf's goodbye at the end of the first act directly mirrors the flashback later on where Dorgan (Bartz's dad) stays behind to watch over Exdeath. Galuf obviously feels guilt for everything that happened then, but especially the fact that he didn't have the courage to do what his friend did.

Then it becomes his turn to show that same courage. To leave behind his new friends and return to his world of shit where Exdeath has returned and monsters attack his castle, because he wants to absolve them of a responsibility he feels isn't thiers'. Of course, they follow him anyway because it's not about responsibility at all. it's just about loving Galuf and wanting to help him.

that's why the scene in Regole where Galuf and Bartz share a beer at the pub in the middle of the night is such a vital one. It's the handshake that throws out all pretense of obligation and guilt and simply says "I care about you and won't let you face this alone", all without actually saying it in that way that men do with each other. This sentiment pays off later, of course, when Bartz and the gang openly accept Krile into their family in Galuf's stead, which is basically why the ending of the game is so perfect. Krile being met at Galuf's grave by everyone and then riding off into the sunset together is just a pure kino moment.
>>
>>562970291
FF5 just has really good pacing, too. I think one of the reasons it lends itself so well to multiple replays, aside from the job system, is that it really doesn't have "that part". Like, maybe the fire-powered ship leading into the exploding castle? You could say the 30-floor Phoenix tower, but that's optional, and by the end of the game it's basically just a chance for you to bust out Freelancer/Mime and steamroll everything, as well as using the magic urns to finish leveling jobs.

Why though? The job system isn't even that deep. I can understand playing it maybe 2 or even 3 times in 2 years, but I can't understand playing it 5 times in 2 years.

>>
>>562983504
Bout 10 bucks. Nabbed the second battle pass and a few of the daily paid pulls. Tbh I don't think it was necessary but I'm having fun with the game so idc.
>>
>>562983504
Like $6 of real money, but I redeemed some Google rewards for the $14 pack so SE has gotten $20 because of me. Honestly, they'll probably get more. As much as I hate my teammates most games, I do think the game is pretty cool and I do enjoy FF as a series.
>>
>>562976805
>I can't understand playing it 5 times in 2 years.
Sounds like a (You) problem. I'll agree the system isn't particularly deep, but that doesn't stop it from being functional, fun, and dynamic. It's super easy to build characters the way you want. And if you play a 4 job fiesta, it forces you to think of strategies and use items, accessories, and armor that you might not have bothered with in a regular playthrough. Like, nobody probably uses Apollo's harp in a regular run, but I got Bard in my first fiesta and it became one of my favorite weapons in the game.

Plus, the game is actually packed with details that support the plot and character development to the point that I notice something new each time I play. I also took the opportunity to play every existing translation to compare them and found some amusing things. Like how some of Faris' infamously obnoxious pirate speak from the PS1 translation was lifted directly to the GBA port as an "homage", akin to the Woolseyisms they kept in the GBA ports of 4 and 6—since there wasn't really any nostalgia for 5 in the west, they legitimately took dialogue people hated and made it work, which I found hilarious.

Also, the game is only like 30-40 hours and has great pacing. It's tight, bright, and fun. You basically just baited me into explaining what it feels like to unironically love something to the point that you simply want to absorb as much of it as you can, lmao. Weird.
>>
>>562985435
>a few of the daily paid pulls
I don't really see the value myself. I know it's like 88% discount but just general pool pulls at regular rate? The weekly though is something I wish I did from the start. I saw "SR guaranteed" and thought it meant one slot was guaranteed like on a normal multi, but it's every individual draw is SR or higher, with double UR rate. 6 bucks for a bunch of growth eggs and like 2 in 3 shot at a UR? I'll take it.
>>
>after all these years finally playing raid shadow legends for mogcoins
I better pull some UR for doing all this shit in this shit game
>>
>>562983504
Less than I spent on FFXVI, and honestly, I'm having way more fun with this than I did with FFXVI.
>>
>get invited to group for what I assume is for the weekly mission
>"Sorry guys I might drag you down"

>it could happen sooner than you might guess
Probably not. There are a million other characters that are going to be added first, and it's probably a 2 new characters per month game at best. I'd bet EoS before Rydia.
>>
>>562988282
Same. It's really not a good sign when a mobile spinoff cash grab shit manages to outshine the mainline game in terms of enjoyment as a video game.
>>
>>562991945
>it's probably a 2 new characters per month game at best
The producer said after this inital blitz to get every numbered game into Duellum they'd slow down to "not quite one a month" so something like every 6 weeks. So Sephiroth mid June, Tidus at the start of August, Celes mid September, Noctis November, and Christmas Kefka. Maybe it's closer to a character every 5 weeks. Maybe there are more multi release campaigns, but that's not something to bank on. Though I will admit that December being a big spending time in gachas and also the anniversary of both Dissidia and FF as a whole I don't think they'll let that sit with just Kefka but we'll see as the year goes on.
>>
>>562993098
Yeah, so no Rydia until year 3 or 4 at the earliest, if it's even still alive by then.
>>
Rydia is shit and has no place in Dissidia
>>
What iff... adult rydia went back in time and became her own mom
>>
>>562986916
It can be a bit hit or miss in my opinion, but getting 50 pulls for a few bucks isn't bad even if the pool is large. The 5% rate makes it a good option if you want URs. Of course, the downsides are that most of your pulls are going to be random Rs, you won't be able to aim for specific abilities, and there is also no pity.
>>
>>562993476
The most recent interview with the producer from like 3 days ago he said one of his top priorities in choosing who gets in is spotlighting characters who haven't had as much attention. That's (part of) why Iroha is in and not Shantotto who was the FF11 rep from the start of Dissidia and why Celes is getting in before someone like Squall. Obviously they know where their bread is buttered and are going to put in characters like Cloud and Sephiroth because that's what funds the deep cuts, but I'm expecting some curveballs
>>
>>562989501
How do you play bad in this? Not wasting Bust when you are about to be PK?
>>
>>562993098
I hope Sepheroth is a debuff support that uses time jannies.
>>
>>562999316
Ranged type, actually. Supernova is a UR that cannot be used in the first 60 seconds of a match and hopefully has like 100 seconds of cooldown, but hits everyone on the map. Octoslash just does a big damage combo for UR 2. Oblivion is a gap closer for medium damage, astral gate as an AoE get away from me move, not sure which is the SR and which is the R. Passive and unique action are not known.

Don't want to sound rude but you must have serious skill issues if you ever get a game over in story fights. They're basically easy mode for the game, the real challenge lies in side content like mob hunts. Stealing is only for extra loots. It never gives anything worthwhile except for the Gilgamesh boss.

100% agree, brilliantly put. It's always been weird to me that some folks will applaud FFIV's characters and storytelling while shitting on FFV's in the same breath, when the latter builds on the former in so many ways.
>most of the FF fanbase hasn't played more than 2-3 games which often lead to games having a dedicated urban legend about it which is never really disproven because the people who could actually disprove it are pretty insignificant in the larger FF fandom.
Also extremey true. I myself was guilty of this until I actually played the game. The longer I was immersed in the FF fandom without hearing any real praise or "hot takes" about how V actually, secretly had an amazing story that people were sleeping on, the more I capitulated to the common belief that it was only worth playing for the job system. It was like a reverse echo-chamber effect, where I assumed an opinion must not be valid simply because I wasn't hearing it.
>>

>V has "on paper" a simpler and lighthearted plot than IV which is why it's often ridiculed
I'd actually like to build on this for a second, because it's a problem among almost every FF game. Nearly every entry with an actual narrative from like 3-9 has its somber parts and its silly parts in equal measure, but people like to selectively ignore whatever doesn't match the vibe they want to project.

To be honest, I think this is just an aspect of Japanese media clashing with western sensibilities and expectations. In Japan, sandwiching humor and pathos together isn't as taboo as it is in America. The important part is that the humor never comes AT THE EXPENSE of the pathos. There might be a silly gag about the villain literally turning himself into a splinter, but when we're exploring Krile's fears of loneliness or Faris' vulnerability, it's 100% straight-faced. This dichotomy upsets Americans for some reason, and they manifest their refusal to acknowledge such tonal dissonance by completely downplaying or admonishing one side of it.

The end result is hamstrung opinions that completely misunderstand or overlook intended thematical elements just because they rub elbows with the fantastical, childish, and absurd. This is why so much of the western FF7 fandom outright despised Cait Sith, or chose to completely ignore Cloud's mental trauma and pretend the plot was just about Good Big Sword Man getting revenge on Evil Big Sword Man. It's also why one of the biggest criticisms of FF4 is all the "fake-out" deaths, despite the fact that those are instrumental to the game's themes. This refusal to acknowledge the coexistence of drama and whimsy has only snowballed as people expect games to look more and more like movies that constantly tell you how you're supposed to feel about any given scene with hyper-realistic facial expressions and 4k ultra HD atmospheres. Older games had to make do with plain text and 12-pixel-tall avatars—investment was required.

>They even make a point about Midgar having fake suns under the plate.
I feel like the reason for this was that they didn't want to have an entire 50-60 hour game set in depressing darkness. The vibe worked (and was arguably instrumental) in the original game where Midgar was just the first several hours or so, but I understand the need for varied environments.

>FF4 is right there.
How do we feel about the DS remake? I've been playing it lately and it feels like it doesn't really hit its stride until you get the airship, but then everything kinda clicks. The combat is notably more balanced and complex, with more viable strategies and depth. I've heard people describe the difficulty as "unforgiving", and being grind-bait, but honestly the game just expects you to actually think and use your status spells, which many FF fans have been conditioned to think useless.

I'm just about to head into the final dungeon, and I feel like the game has only truly been frustrating once or twice, with one instance of me simply needing to reset until a boss ran an attack pattern I could survive. My only real complaint would be the augment system effectively being New Game+ bait since you can't get all of them in one playthrough, and the best ones require you to give away augments to temporary party members, and you'd have no idea which ones are worth trading for what without a guide.

I'd say it isn't a problem because you CAN beat the game without getting the best augments, but it's just that being able to put new skills and abilities on these characters is a big part of what makes the combat more fun and dynamic than the original. I love having Cecil with counter/kick, or turning Edge into a ninja bard.

>It's also why one of the biggest criticisms of FF4 is all the "fake-out" deaths
Reminder that Cloud, Tifa, and Sephiroth all have fake-out deaths in VII, it's just perceived differently because you begin at the point where they are still alive. And then Barret has one in Remake. And I'd argue that VII has even more plot contrivances aside from Cloud, Tifa, and Sephiroth's fake deaths than IV does, but people (at least here) choose to overlook those while focusing on an inconsequential aspect of IV that isn't even actually egregious. You could also say FFX has a lot of fake-out deaths, especially considering the fact that like half the main cast is already dead. There's only even 4 fake-out deaths in IV (Palom+Porom who can be considered "1" if you want to lower the number to 3, Cid, and Yang), and them living does nothing to or for the narrative except that Yang has a sidequest, and I'd wager they were all intended to have side quests but that got cut at some point. Even if we want to pretend that IV's fake deaths are a massive issue when they're not, there actually aren't even that many of them, and their fake deaths are all completely inconsequential to the narrative, which some people might consider a worse outcome, but for people to only show up at the very end of the game essentially in a cameo just to show that they didn't die is a lot better than someone dying on-screen and then having a pivotal role in the narrative later.

>>563060223
I think it's the best version of IV easily.

>I've heard people describe the difficulty as "unforgiving", and being grind-bait
It's definitely "harder" than is "normal" for Final Fantasy, but I wouldn't even say you need to grind, and you can play the overwhelming majority of the game by just using the auto battle to select the same previously used command every time. Same as all FFs, you only really need to deviate for boss battles, and almost solely just to heal. It just expects you to fight the randoms.

This is my take. The fact that they come back isn't really a detriment to anything. And thematically, the fact that they come back is pretty relevant, and the game hits you pretty hard over the head with the idea that Tellah (the one death that isn't a fake-out) only truly dies because he sacrificed his life for anger and revenge, rather than to protect anything. And that kind of runs parallel to Cecil's entire arc of going from a dark knight who literally spends his own HP to hurt others, to a Paladin who selflessly absorbs hits for his friends.

I think my only real criticism would be that Yang should only show up at the siege of Babil if you made the trek to the bottom of the Sylph cave to see him beforehand. But this was really their first foray into narratives with missable content, so I can see why they also wanted him there for the big "power of friendship" moment, regardless of what the player did.

>can play the overwhelming majority of the game by just using the auto battle
True. Toward the last third of the game, I definitely started running into some battles where casting slow/stop on certain enemies ASAP was non-negotiable, though, otherwise they'd start one/two-hit KO-ing people. I had good results with having Edge sing Alluring Aire on his first turn to confuse anything susceptible, as well. Being able to cast protect/shell on all party members at once is also a huge asset which a lot of players might overlook because those spells are traditionally single-cast only in FFs.

>Being able to cast protect/shell on all party members at once is also a huge asset which a lot of players might overlook because those spells are traditionally single-cast only in FFs.
It also seems to be an extremely recurring theme with FF players that they don't realize you can use Rods and Staves in battle to cast offensive or defensive/curative magic, which really helps a lot particularly for random battle, and by the time the healing staff starts falling off for this purpose, Rosa has Pray anyway.

No, you very clearly have never used rods or staves as items in battle to cast spells. There is no inventory management involved. You equip the character with the rod or the staff that casts the spell you want to be using, you go to items, and you press *up* at the top of the menu, and it displays the character's equipped items, and you select their equipped rod or staff from there. And in the 3D version, you can set it as one of their commands. No inventory management at all.

Similar scenario with Kain and his constant betrayals. If you take them at face value, you might think its ridiculous that the party keeps "falling for him", but there's a pretty obvious thematic element to his posession that the game drives home even harder in the DS version. It's one of the things that actually makes him a good character and not just a tryhard jerk, imo.

And I love his costume in the new mobile gacha shit, because edgelord fedora-man is entirely his vibe. Playing the DS version and seing his grumpy, grimdark silhouette alongside the rest of the party on the victory pose screen really drives home how much of a literal fifth wheel he is. We see Cecil get his shit together, and Edge (despite his immaturity) arrives in your party with his shit already together, but Kain is basically a messy incel for the whole game, and that's why he goes on a journey at the end to become a better person.

Breaking rods in V is awesome, though. Using a rod in IV only casts the weakest level of elemental spell, which effectively just makes it serve as an MP-saver for random encounters. Breaking a rod in V unleashes Firaga/Blizzaga/Thundaga, which can be a HUGE asset, especially in a four job fiesta. But the rods are so rare/expensive and you only have access to them for a short window where you likely don't have the cash to stock up on them, so it balances out. Especially since equipping the rods gives an innate 50% boost to their respective element (which they don't in IV), so it both gives them more utility, and makes breaking them a trade-off.

Plus I just love the idea of taking a masterfully crafted arcane artifact of significant value and smashing the fuck out of it to release an elemental hellstorm above your pay grade. It's always fun to just show up at Shiva and bust a fire rod in her face.

Yeah, that's why I like it. It gives the "useless" mages something to do in random encounters that actually contributes, allowing you to save their MP for bosses where you can just unload like you'd want to be doing anyway. So essentially nothing changes except that your mages contribute (sometimes more than the melee) to random encounters instead of attacking and doing 20 damage or whatever and being dead weight.

I just don't like the idea of Rods and Staves essentially being versions of "Arctic Wind" and those types of items, because those already exist and the non-V Rods and Staves do something unique that nothing else does. I'm not a Fiesta enjoyer though. I don't even like V that much.

>Well, specifically for IV3D
One of the few changes in FFIV 3D that I actively dislike is that changing your equipment in battle now uses up a turn. In the SNES games, rifling through your inventory and changing what you have in either hand was a free action. I don't think it's unreasonable to change that, but at the same time, being able to change your equipment for free isn't such a broken strategy that I think it needs to be penalized. If anything it was far more abusable in FFV where you had a lot more weapons with fun bonus effects.

>>563067531
>I just don't like the idea of Rods and Staves essentially being versions of "Arctic Wind"
Same. The one thing that makes them SOMEWHAT more useful in the DS version of IV, at least, is that their power is doubled by the "item lore" augment. But then again, so are those same attack items.

Last week, I finally played Final Fantasy 7R. And honestly... what a letdown. The story tried to tie up years’ worth of plotlines from games I had nο connection with, and it did so in a messy way. >It gives the "useless" mages something to do in random encounters that actually contributes, allowing you to save their MP for bosses
This doesn't really matter in FFIV onward though, since that's when they started putting save points before every boss, so you can just refuel with a tent. Rods in V add multiple kinds of utility and are balanced to match V's gameplay. Rods in IV are balanced for the gameplay in I-III, which kind of makes them redundant, which is probably exactly why they changed them going forward.

...for zero MP. Allowing them to be effective in random battles when they otherwise would not be. Whereas V's Rods and Staves are just different versions of Arctic Wind type items, something that already exists and honestly in my opinion serves no purpose whatsoever outside of limitations like the Four Job Fiesta. Presumably, that is; I am not a Fiesta enjoyer so I wouldn't know, but I do know it serves no purpose playing V normally.

Again, this doesn't matter if you just carry tents on you. The dungeons in FF4 almost always have a save point halfway, then another before the boss. Conserving MP isn't ever really an issue.
>Whereas V's Rods and Staves are just different versions of Arctic Wind type items, something that already exists
But those items DON'T exist in V. And the rods in V add the funcitonality of boosting their respective elemental damage by 50% when equipped. They're also prohibitively rare/expensive for the window you have access to them, so it forces you to weigh wether or not breaking them is worth it. And unlike the elemental attack items, they're super strong when they're first available, which makes them actually useful and not just an alternative to spending MP, which again, isn't a concern when you can just buy tents.

I'm not the anon you started this discussion with, but having to rebuke you actually made me realize how monumentally superior rods are in V, like through and through. They basically took the concept of single-use elemental attack items that bloat your inventory, and turned them into a functional piece of equipment with extra utility and a cost-benefit factor to consider. They're even MORE useful when you take into account they can be equipped and used by jobs that don't actually have access to those elemental spells, like Blue Mage, or Time Mage.
>>
>>563072675
>But those items DON'T exist in V.

They're a thousand times better than arctic winds just for the fact that they can be used to boost elemental damage by being equipped, but you seem keen on purposefully ignoring that point. You just think they're arctic winds because they're now consumable, and that rustles your jimmies for some reason.
>>
>>563073346
>They're a thousand times better than arctic winds
Sure, yeah. They do more damage and you can equip them, that's definitely "better" than Arctic Winds. It's not better than the other versions of Rods and Staves though.

>but you seem keen on purposefully ignoring that point
Why do you falsely think that, and why is this becoming deeply personal for you? I'm ignoring this """point""" because it isn't relevant to the conversation of Rods and Staves being items you can infinitely use in any battle vs them being turned into glorified Arctic Winds.

It is. Especially given how they're balanced to match the gameplay of the game they're actually in. You're imagining FFV rods in the gamepay of FF I-IV and calling them bad in a context in which they do not exist. The funniest part is that even if you took the rods out of V and put them in I-IV, they would still be more useful. Boosting spell strength by 50% or becoming a one-time -Aga spell is so much more utility than using them to spam weak-ass elemental spells for free.

And designing your game so that you need to hoard your MP up for the boss, but then giving the player a workaround to be able to cast spells for free is such lazy and uninspired gameplay. It's like locking a door, but leaving the window open right next to it. If we were talking about FFI-III which didn't have saves before most bosses, you might have a point, but this discusison specifically started regarding FFIV, which is the game where rods are most objectively redundant. The nuance of this seems way over your head, somehow.

There are no parallel versions of anyone; everyone is in linear and non-linear time where they lie about their age, and having ever done the same thing ever before; this is actually the 4th of 5th time Hope has made an Academia tower, but he lies and says he's the same age every time it's year 7.

I think it's funny that they made a purely PvP gacha game and that there is essentially a designated whale tier for the PvPers. I've seen gachas where there is PvE and the PvP is just side content which some people (i.e. whales) treat as main content, but I can't say that I've ever seen a purely PvP gacha game before.

My cope is they'll eventually have a system or give out enough resources that most players will be able to have one omega viable character and whaling will be for people that want to play multiple characters at a high level

...yeah, well needing to read the cards isn't necessarily keyword bloat, that's just something you need to do if you're unfamiliar with the game. If you're a new player you wont realize that Magic is an extremely far cry from the game it used to be. You need to play "Pauper", a format that only allows common cards, to feel even a semblance of the game that Magic used to be.

Yeah, you can pretty easily shit out an entire board of massive tokens nowadays. As an example, Tarmogoyf was a staple creature from back when Magic first started turning bad. Magic first started turning bad when they added the Planeswalker card type which is complete cancer, but you could still play Magic back in these days. Anyway, this card was so fucking overpowered back then that it was like $200 each and now it's like $10. This was basically a 2 mana 4/3 or a 2 mana 4/5 and was insanely good because you can shit it out pretty early and an early game 4/5 is hard to deal with, even if it doesn't have any abilities.

Tarmogoyf came around at "the beginning of the end" in terms of Magic's integrity as a card game, and now it's basically unplayable because it's not good enough. That's not even mentioning the fact that Magic is just collabslop and you have Spongebob and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Spiderman cards (and Final Fantasy cards) and shit like that.

I'm still confused as to why you claim MtG is mechanically bad when you can counter any creature deck by just having that one card that let you kill any creature. I can understand the rulebloat, but a single creature sounds insanely easy to counter.
Well, on paper anyway.

I concur for the collab shit, I was very surprised that MtG sold itself even more than a fighting game.

>>563119069
>I'm still confused as to why you claim MtG is mechanically bad
I never claimed MtG is mechanically bad. It's the grandfather of TCG for a reason. The core, fundamental mechanics are all very good and have been copied many times for this reason. The current game is just so astronomically powercrept from where the game started* and it's even so astronomically powercrept from when Magic first started losing its integrity that you basically can't play the most expensive card of the formats in the modern age. Tarmogoyf has a massive, lasting impression across all formats back in the day, and it just doesn't anymore because the game is too powercrept, has too much feature creep, and has too much keyword bloat that a vanilla 2 mana 4/5 just isn't good enough anymore, and it used to be INSANE. And the game was already becoming bad back when it was good.

>a single creature sounds insanely easy to counter.
You don't play Magic. The decks that liked playing Tarm the most were also at least somewhat control decks. You don't play the thing you want to keep around if your think your opponent can counter it or if you can't protect it with your own counters.
>>
So if you play DPS without Fire RF you're pretty much just trolling

>Cloud
Doesn't count
>>
>>563119803
>just so astronomically powercrept from where the game started*
Oops, I meant to add an asterisk note.

>from where the game started*
The game technically started with crazy cards like Time Walk and Ancestral Recall and Black Lotus and the Moxen, which are typically referred to as the "Power 9" because they originally printed crazy power in the first iteration of the game because they didn't really know any better at that point. But they course corrected and cards became a lot more grounded for along time.
>>
>>563119803
I see, yeah. Now that you say it, my friend did show me how busted the FF collab was.

>You don't play the thing you want to keep around if your think your opponent can counter it or if you can't protect it with your own counters.

The interaction is part of why Magic used to be good and is the grandfather of TCG.
>>
>>563120303

Pokemon TCG?
>>
>>563106151
>I can't say that I've ever seen a purely PvP gacha game before.
I would consider card games to fall into that category and Pokemon TCG is top 5 money maker on the app stores. There's a China exclusive Naruto 3v3 fighter which has big esport tournaments even. Dragon Ball Legends is another consistent performer. The game that this game is based on, #COMPASS never made crazy money but it has been making enough money to fund itself for a decade and make an FF remake seem like it'd make a buck or two.
>>
why are you guys even supporting a square enix gacha, you know it'll die in two years. that's the fucked up shit about SE.
>>
The biggest mistake and probably the reason DDFF is going to EoS isn't it being pay to win, it's the fact that it's a mixed toilet game
>>
>>563120765
>Pokemon TCG is top 5 money maker on the app stores
That has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that it's a "PvP" game, it has to do with the fact that it's Pokemon. The whales probably don't even play the game, they probably just spend to try to open the chase cards, since higher rarity cards in that game aren't actually any better than lower rarity cards that are the same card.
>>
>>563121103
>That has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that it's a "PvP" game
The point is not that it makes money by being PvP, it's that it has one of the biggest communities of supporters and an amount of fan goodwill and faith, so obviously those things are not incompatible with the idea of "a pvp gacha"
>>
>>563121541
>so obviously those things are not incompatible with the idea of "a pvp gacha"
I don't think you understood what I said. Pokemon TCG makes money because it's Pokemon TCG, not because you can play other players in an extremely rudimentary card game. Just look at real life Pokemon TCG cards. Grown ass men don't show up at Target on opening of restock day and buy the entire stock that they put out instantly because they actually use the cards, they do it because other people collect the cards. Pokemon TCG makes money because it is a virtual card collector, not because there is a rudimentary PvE and PvP card game attached to it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_highest-grossing_media_franchises
It is the highest grossing franchise of all time, after all. Shit, if Pokemon released a #COMPASS clone, that'd probably do well too, though not as well as a virtual Pokemon card collector where you don't need to engage with the PvE or the PvP aspects of the game if you don't want to and you can still open packs every day and collect the cards.

imma finna keep it real witchu...

altough i love the concept of dissidia mobile game.. i hate the fact that its straight up pay to win. all you need is 2 UR's in your equipment set and you're going to blow everyone away.. secondly, if you want to get the SAME copy of a UR ability you have to get 30 of them, which is usually a 5% chance of pulling a UR.. but that's ANY UR and not the one for your character.

so if you want a good competitive build.. good fuckin luck. i guess it's all luck by pulls but how much of it is really rigged? it has paid and free in-game currencies. i like the fact that they're trying to make their own "persona" to win the younger generation over but not like the FUCK this. so disappointing. they could have made the next dissidia game with the same themes but with the fighting gameplay.. fuck, im mad
