How autistic is this? When New Super Mario Bros. Wii came out in 2009 and I saw Toad and Toad were 3 and 4 instead of Wario and Waluigi I told myself I would not buy another Mario game until Nintendo corrected this mistake. I've made good on that promise so far. Every time a Mario game with multiple characters comes out I check to see if they added Wario and Waluigi, and they never do, so I either don't play or I pirate.

Several reasons. Mainly, competition. The four are locked in an eternal struggle to be "the best". They appear in every spin-off for that reason. Extending this to their main adventures wherever applicable is a natural extension of their primary reasons for being, and keeps some dramatic texture. A full cast with zero tension is boring, it's nothing. It's such a waste having four characters to play as when two of them are effectively placeholders.Plus there's the fact that even Wario wants Peach's favor in the comics. All those reasons are why nobody batted an eye when he was in SM64DS. It's not suddenly a problem in a sidescroller. And Waluigi is especially simple in his rivalry. Any chance he has to stalk Luigi, screw him over, and get any attention and clout over him, he would take. There are millions of opportunities to do things like that in that in four-player Mario.You don't need special mechanics or extra cutscenes to make it work. Just let the concept sit there and do its own work.
