An Non when will you finally make a shitty low effort AI-asset having INCREMENTAL GAME that inevitably makes 50K per month thanks to the plain as shit zombie brains the _hordes_ of normies out there possess, granting you permanent funding for any dream project you're currently thinking about? Are you stupid? >>563189425>>563189694Well, I think FTL, Into the Breach, etc are good case studies to look at. They have some interviews where they talk about their approach to making games and design choices that made them successful. One of the things that stuck out to me as impressive was their ability to take an idea, and cut away everything extra so they were only focused on the core mechanics. Another good choice they make is always having everything you need on the screen. They had some lessons learned too about being upfront about what the "RNG" outcomes in a game would be.I'd also like to make something like this. That studio and Zachtronics seem like very well oiled machines.

My hope at the moment is to reach out to all the taiwanese streamers on twitch and youtube (I have about 100 emails for those so far). Plus a few hundred japanese streamers that play mahjong.Interestingly there is a split in the audiences - Japanese players are very familiar with mahjong, but most have never touched Balatro. The west obviously all know Balatro, but few know mahjong. Then the Chinese market has the best crossover since they love mahjong and are crazy for any roguelike deckbuilder.Like there's demonic mahjong which has 3k+ reviews, then feng shui meowjong has ~300 reviews but the game is extremely unpolished.>>563220140I'm at 115 now, getting 1-6 per day. >>563235291setting the bar too high is the reason of 99% of all modern mental health problems.people feel too ugly, too unfit, too dumb, too uncreative, too untalented, too asocial, too unsexy, too annoying, too boring etc. etc.why? cause media showed us how high the bar can go up.actually watched a documentary about an older guy who makes paintings recently and he just draws some classical architecture. he's so chill, the vibe is so pure and relaxing. and his paintings sell. his only bar is himself. and on top of that he doesn't even think competitive, he just wants to get into the flow zone. which is impossible if you set the bar too high. nobody would play mobas if you were matched against the best players in the world every match. you'd just get frustrated (and they'd get bored).but that being said, even making a normal living with gamedev is a very high bar if you start from scratch.i think the only cure to lower that bar is turning off the internet and not consuming other peoples content. not even games.i've noticed the same when making music. when my mind was blank i just had fun making sounds and trying out things. as soon as i looked for inspiration to make better music, my brain began to just overload and get desperate cause i didn't know how to exactly get their sound. and all sorts of other problems.maybe the secret to success is finding a quiet place and embracing the silence and only comparing yourself to yourself from yesterday.there is something related with the whole question "can you have success with gamedev?". which too many people try to answer by asking the internet. they'll never figure out if it works, cause the internet already told them it wont. (most people are fucking depressed and negative, because they are also frustrated by how high they've set the bar for themselves).

Most gamers exclusively play live service slop. The people who actually buy indie games play them for 2-4 hours and move onto the next set of shiny keys dangled in front of their face.I've love to be the exception and make a true work of art but i'm not capable of making a truly amazing game yet. And so in order to survive I have to focus on trend slop.

i'd rather have a project that makes me 100k lifetime earnings but it's so cool that i want to finish it, than having a project that could make 10 million but it demotivates me all day long so i never finish it and don't make any money.the real problem isn't "how to optimize for money", the real problem is optimizing to keep yourself motivated for literally years to stick to one single project. which is insanely hard.

i don't have lack of motivation or discipline. i have lack of vision. i can't even formulate what i want to make.i thought about quitting gamedev and just doing something different. but i also see no reason to dev, or to write, or to make software or websites, or to make music. everything exists. i don't see anything that "needs to be made".i tried rebuilding and improving games i like in the past, but i'm totally over that nowadays. the biggest reason is that i've noticed that i'm really just rebuilding them, i have nothing to add, nothing to improve. it only feels good for some months to be productive and yesdev just to reach the point where you realize how stupid and pointless your project is.a good example is so many people making a minecraft clone, yet nobody plays those. cause they add literally nothing. hytale might succeed cause they have the budget to scale (better art, better tools, more content etc.), but scaling is something for companies, not for solodevs.i have literally no answer anymore. i'm completely out of ideas. there's only one thing i have in mind and that is to have bigger ideas. something like landing on the moon. just something that's impossible to do for me, but pushes me to try hard. cause making a minecraft clone doesn't push me at all, it just feels pointless.

damn dude. i started gamedev in jan. 2025 and have nothing to show for it. nothing but a few dozen concept arts and notepad files. i suppose i have severe ADHD. i have to force myself to work everyday, or the game will never get done. but looking at my future full of work feels like staring down the barrel of a gun. i won't get to relax anymore, life will be work all the time for the next few years. and even if i succeed, i will be 30 years old with no social life and no chance of getting a girl. of course, i'm young enough to dick around in thailand for 1 year and its fine. but if you have to eventually lock in anyway and work super hard, isn't it pointless? if there's no escaping a life full of work, shouldn't we simply learn to embrace working 24/7 like japanese people? i don't get it. when I'm actually working, i can't say i'm happy, but i'm not unhappy either. time just passes in a blur. that seems like a waste of life to me, but if it's what i have to do to make something amazing, maybe that's just something i have to accept./blog

so like, operating unde the assumption that I already have a decent idea of what my game is going to be and how it's going to work, what is the first thing you do when you start up unity/ue/godot/whatever for the first time in order to get started on the game? spawn a cube and write code to make it move? what's the first building block? in pico 8 you don't have much in terms of tools so there's pretty much nothing to do than draw a sprite, spawn it in the frame and then program it to do the things you want, but I suppose you could also start with tilesets or whatever

>>563221570lol stop crying and face the reality
>>563266693I'm trying to create enemies that are very aggressive and attack in groups, thus forcing the player to navigate tight windows.Sort of like Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 because those are literally the only real hack and slashes (Souls shit can go eat a fat dick, it's as much a hack and slash as a Zelda game is) I can remotely think of where the enemies are actually aggressive and trying to kill you, thus justifying your expansive moveset. As you can see, I'm barely a 10th of the way there, but I'll figure out something.I have a backstep and circle routine for the enemy that allows it to choose "Back away" or "Circle the player I'm chasing" as well as attack/approach. The higher the aggression value, the more it prioritizes an aggressive pattern. Also, you described hack and slash games like those as "For 7-12 year olds." So maybe don't act surprised when I'm not accepting critique from someone who has voiced open disdain for the genre I'm going for.

>>563267747yes I see that, and there's nothing wrong with thathowever, what I'm saying is I would say the "early prototyping focus" is important to decide where on the "spectrum" of those styles the enemy should be in, for example the enemy at 40 minutes in my video, and the enemy in your video are bosses, however I would say designing the regular enemies first is a good idea, especially since you said the enemies are going to attack as groupsright now the enemy reminds me of the bird enemy from "outward"I'm not saying you're doing anything wrong, only that the focus seems like you're overcomplicating things for yourself, I'm genuinely trying to helpessentially, there's nothing wrong with the end goal, but putting together a solid gameplay loop with one attack and one group of enemies, and one boss and then adding attacks to the player/enemies as they go, similar to how the player might find more advanced enemies and unlock attacks as they playthere's nothing wrong with the way you're doing things, however it's a lot easier to get a feel for a prototype this way, obviously other devs might have varying ideals, but I would say it's unlikely anyone would say what I'm suggesting is not an easier route to a satisfying outcome
>>563268597I’m more focused on getting the combat to work the way it should. Problem is, there is 100% something I’m missing on a functional level but I can’t tell what it is.

my entire gameplay system is built around the player character using a spear for a weapon, but how do I make that make sense inside the game. like "why can't I pick this dead enemy's sword and use that?" especially in situations where it would look like a sword or something would be more convenient. "le legendary weapon" is the only explanation I can come up with but that's kind of lame. and I don't like the theme of conjured weapons (they disappear when enemies die)and if I give all enemies rusted or makeshift weapons that it would be reasonable not to want to pick up, then I'd run into the problem of "how were these things able to take over and be a threat in thr first place?"

>>563269146>>563269940yes, so now that we agree, I would suggest focusing on the gameplay before "we" add anything newthe most important things I'm seeing right now are only two things:the camera feels jarring to watch, and possibly worse while playing, which is specifically from how close to the enemy the camera gets, and how the enemy is able to go to the side of the camera, half out of viewand then, reworking the distance the enemy tries to maintain from the player between attacks might help a lotobviously do whatever you want, it's your gameI'm helping since you're one of the only ones posting consistent progress recently, that's the only motivation

>>563271418mmmm cookie

>>563271826I don't really understand why you would do it that way specifically other than to prove to yourself you can do it I guess. This really seems like a problem you've conjured up for yourself, most obvious for me would be to just keep them separate but attach the smaller asteroid to the bigger and keep its position/rotation relative to the parent. >>563271357>>563272305also one last thing, this is prototype-able with only one attack animation>>563271642>>563272469>>563271826yes it's similar to the other discussion in this thread, I feel like it's the wrong focus, asteroids don't do that in reality and even in an arcade style game there's no point in making an arcade style system of something that doesn't happen in realityif it's for learning, it makes sense, but what is the purpose for the asteroids to connect like that?
>>563271969It's either that or mild trypophobia.>>563272469You're definitely right but I want to process merged asteroids as single entities and rewriting things to support multiple tilemaps per asteroid, while an obviously correct choice, is simply too much work.

progress
>>563195504>>563273537The new one is good but the old one is extremely funny and stupid looking and I love it a lot.
>>563273914>I actually don't know what pixel perfect collision isIt's kind of the same as what you're doing now, but you can use the tiles for the "map" or world itself, then you can chunk your asteroids into "tiles" but when resolving collisions you can narrow down to the specific chunks involved by comparing positions and then marching through individual pixels from bitmap mask. You're just checking if pixels are overlapping on each mask, amask is just white/transparent or however you wanna do it, one solid color indicating where the collision is. This means it's also something that isn't impossible to generate or add dynamically.

I have recently decided that I will make puzzle games because I can't into art and don't want to team up and I am better at abstract thought than aesthetics (although I still hope to make something that is visually appealing). Many of my past gamedev came to a halt in no small parts due to the requirement of visual asset production in large quantities. I have now started playing many games in this genre to understand how it works and how these games are played and enjoyed. I hope I will be able to craft interesting puzzles for people to enjoy.Based on my observation so far I do believe there is a market for good puzzle games, the low revenue statistic is simply skewed by a large volume of lower quality games (which I may or may not contribute to in the future).

anyone have any idea how i can cull procedurally generated meshes from a set point (NOT the camera) that get rendered with graphics.drawmesh? im using unity btwi cant find any resources on the topic outside of>hurr! just use.. le built on occulusion culler that only works with static pre-baked meshes..?>erm.. why not just... cull anything that isnt in le camera..?>have you tried... ze hyper inefficient and inaccurate raycast that also relies solely on colliders..?none are valid solutions
