this could be the comfiest part of my life and its likely to all go downhill from here
I've been working on my game for almost 2 years
I'm a very adult NEET living with my parents in my mid 30s. failson in every way but my parents don't seem to mind. they're not bugging me to get a job or do anything. whenever I express anxiety about my situation they say something like don't worry about it, it'll be okay
right now I'm working on my game and wasting time on 4chan, my mom is baking a cake and my dad and my uncle are fixing his truck in the garage. everybody is healthy
I'll be looking back at this time as the best time of my life as sad as that sounds. I'd love to pay my parents back for their kindness and support. if my game is a success I can send them on trips and buy them stuff but what's more likely is they'll be spending money on me and then they'll die and I'll still be a loser if not a failson because I won't be anybody's son

Honestly, man, it sounds like you're in a rare slice of peace in a chaotic world. Don't sweat the "failson" label too much, you're doing your thing, and that’s more than a lot of people can say. The fact that your parents are chill and supportive is a blessing, not a given, and you should cherish that. Building your game and just living in the moment, even if it’s on 4chan and with a baking mom, is what life’s about sometimes. Success is a tricky thing, but at the end of the day, what matters is that you’re happy with where you are now and grateful for the people around you. If you keep grinding, maybe your game hits big, maybe it doesn’t, but what’s important is the love and connection you have; those are the real wins. Don’t let the future stress you out, just keep doing your thing and appreciating the good times while they last.

my current laptop still have 391gb out of 475gb but my deep rooted paranoia / OCD wont let me install new stuff / make new projects with it. i wasnt like this when i used my previous laptop for 7 years and that one also only have around 475 gb space too. I rarely obsessed about storage space.
>>
Why does this always happen?
I make progress, I feel incredible, and then I plunge into a really deep depression. Just yesterday I made progress in significant ways, but now I’m too sad to even get out of bed

>>563318909
I too have "OCD-like personality traits". My home directory only has 20MB of free space, because I will not destroy my old zfs snapshots. I used to dump stuff in my home directory and then move it out to my spinning rust zfs pool. Thus, I have hundreds of gigabytes in those home directory snapshots which already exist elsewhere.

My spinning rust zfs pool is 6x14TB, with ~56TB usable, so it's not like I don't have space. It's just the logistics that kill me.

You might've traveled a significant distance yesterday, but you woke up this morning just to find yourself surrounded by the exact scenery that you have been waking up to every day for the past few months. You have no real clue how much progress you've made, or if you're still just running around in circles, because you have no clue where you are or where your destination is, and you won't until you make and ship a full game.

So I updated my tags last month with some needed optimizations. Before I was only getting sub 75-100 impressions per day, now I get 2-3k daily. Before I had a 50-70% CTR and now it's closer to 6-7% which is good. Right now a majority of impressions are from direct search results, which seems normal as of now.

Not strictly gamedev, but my current project is making a backtest engine for quant finance. Of particular note, I made some SIMD optimizations for vectorized math, and learned how to make my own DAG expression trees for evaluating math, eg (close / close[1] - 1).sma(3) * 100) and it turns it into cached nodes and things like that

In VIDEOGAME terms, I can eventually use this system for mass processing NPCs/physics stuff, weather systems, possibly even scripting AI things like FF12 (querying combat state to look at stats etc)

Here's just my 2 cents from what I've learned about combat working on my game and on what I'm seeing.
Games with complex combat involved dozens, hundreds of different states the characters, both the player and enemies can be in. The Souls games are basically runnning on spreadsheets of character states. Any one state can lead into several others so you have a system that can dynamically define and control what state any character could be in while also providing triggers for running stuff like animation and sound.
>running state -> timed attack state that plays an animation and sounds and does hitbox checks for a number of frames/seconds -> another state depending on the context of the character
If what you have running isn't really providing that, it might be time to rethink what you have to maybe find a more straightforward code solution.

I need a reality check.
I started gamedev with possible goals. maybe I could make a living. otherwise I might learn enough to get hired. but the prospects of getting hired are miniscule now that people with formal education and 10-20 years of experience are my competition.
I enjoy making games.. but I have to make money, and making games is a gamble. still, I don't see many doors open. I am visibly autistic and with a bad resume. Nobody wants to hire me but call centers.
>>
>>563331127
Do whatever you want and fuck everyone else in the ass.
>>
>>563330750
I feel my problem is something much more fundamental with how enemies and the player interact within combat. It just doesn't feel "Sticky" if that makes any sense. Like, there's a floaty-ness that I can't really seem to discern the cause of, nor the actual fix for. Root motions don't work for games like these, especially with animation events due to those not being compatible with FBX, so that's 110% out of the picture period.
There's an element that I'm fundamentally not doing but I genuinely don't know what it is.
>>
>>563330918
>>563331268
if you stubbornly insist on sticking with this then you should remove all animations and character models until combat feels great with just collision capsules
you won't though
>>
>>563331127
What games have you made?
>>
>>563331268
Sometimes beat em ups have a feature where when the player or enemy get hit, the game freezes temporarily for a few frames to add impact. Is that what you're talking about?
>>
>>563329353
How it looks. The graphics dictate 90% of what you feel. It'll start looking natural and gamey once you put in proper animation and make it look good and smooth. It's really simple really. At that stage, the only thing you should be concerned is if the systems are working without bugs and that's it.

i wonder if the way the brain works is in "languages". if you read/write/think a lot your brain mainly thinks in words. if you see a lot, your brain mainly thinks in images. if you hear a lot your brain thinks in sounds/music.
it'd explain why heavy thinkers tend to be horrible at art, but good at programming. because their brain has a really bad vocabulary of images.
this means if you want to become better at art, you have to consume less words/thoughts/sentences etc. and consume more images, more visual input. you gotta think more in images and less in words.
e.g. when i meditate i notice i don't see any images, i dont hear any music in my head, but i observe a massive amount of logical thoughts and attempts to solve logical issues. this ofc is horrible for artistic inspiration. if you'd hear music all day and that would be your "language" and you'd close your eyes and hear music, you'd be way better at "talking" that language too. so you'd have an easier time making music.

it might also be why programmers talk so much. e.g. in music discords i noticed that people talk waaaay less. they usually just post music and don't want to have conversations.

This prototype is already in the process of making animations look good and smooth, that dev doesn't even have a title screen or enemy health.
>>
>>563331869
This looks and feels more responsive because they're focused on specific keyframes just like how a fighting game like street fighter focuses on frames. less timers and more frame based. It might be worthwhile for the guy developing devil may cris to research how street fighter and tekken work
>>
>>563332547
the protottype barely has animations at all that has nothing to do with it
>>563332593
you are confusing animations with fluid gameplay movement, rookie mistake
>>
>>563331869
The prototype animations here are posed by a professional artist who understand gesture. They're just not tweened. That's pretty much it. It still includes all the basic game-feel juice like VFX, SFX, motion blur, softbody hair, dynamic cinematic camera, etc.
>>
>>563332492
Maybe start with having your attacks come out instantly, and making the player movement more rigid. I noticed the player seems to slide around a lot?
The footage from the Bayonetta video shows her attacks in the prototype had like only a few frames of actual animation to them, and they run very quickly.
>>
>>563332065
It looks good because the animators know what they're doing for it to feel responsive. Graphics always have always fucking mattered.

>>
>>563332691
>animations with fluid gameplay movement
They are so inseparably intertwined that I consider them to be the same thing. You need to get the gameplay movement and the animations to cooperate.

Try adding an impactful enemy hit animation. It will make the game feel much better. And after looking at your webm again, make your enemies move around in a controlled and slow manner, they're speeding all over the stage.
>>
>>563333480
For starters, if your goal is responsiveness, then just get rid of all acceleration/deceleration and get rid of all lead in frames in all animations. That's what maximally responsive will look like.
>>
>>563334396
What about a controlled and fast way?
>>563334417
I don't even know if that IS my goal. It feels like my problem lies less in animations and more in the fundamental way enemies and the player react to getting hit. There is something WRONG with that.

This is a common 3D solution, since 3D = 6 DoF = too many to constrain with limited mouse+kb input. Basically, just create an imaginary high-acceleration black hole point in front of the player.

This is true big time. The amount of code per enemy is significant even for my 2d game, so separating as much data as possible and having a framework that deals with all the universal stuff like framedata automatically is basically mandatory for adding and balancing content.

Non-game early prototype. Janky/buggy UI. I recommend changing the picking for the units from a capsule encompassing the entire unit to just the box of the tile square. This way unit selection is consistent regardless of camera angle and obstruction from other units. That should fix most of the bugs.

Yes, I am. I guess the description wasnt enough. I'm making QTE HERO/Press K to Kill.

It's a turn based action game. Every turn is a QTE where you press keys (as in typing games, but not word focused) to attack. I don't know how to nail down the pitch because the game is a blend of many small features from genres like typing, roguelite and deckbuilding but none of those genre's players will see my game and think "I need to play this roguelite/deckbuilding/typing game". i.e, is not a roguelite game by itself it just uses some tropes from those genres.

Ah okay. Both "Typing" and "Quick-Time Events" are extremely bad tags to be in, but I wouldn't say that it's hopeless. I think so long as the roguelike/pick-3 elements mesh well with the active QTE elements, then it could certainly be fun. e.g. I would lean heavily on risk-vs-reward management where the roguelike choices can easily cascade the QTE into an extremely difficult state, but with the reward to match. I think so long as the player understands that they themselves made the decisions that caused them to fail, then it can do just fine. Do you have a demo somewhere?

that's why i can't find a job. specialized jobs like programming only exist in large companies with specialized roles, in big cities with big companies.

everything locally are hybrid jobs. same with product-oriented markets.

it's hard to make money just with programming. i guess i could try writing tools, frameworks or engines.

Hmmm... I thought the player didn't look retro enough for a PSX style game so I decided to halve the texture resolution and get rid of some polys.
I wonder if I should replace it, the chunky textures might look more charming to the average gamer...

>how they seem to get hit multiple times by every hitbox
You just described a bug. Assuming you have some sort of code for the hitbox then fix that there. Track what it has hit and do not hit those things again until you reset the list of hit things. Clear the list when you start a new hitbox.

>>563331869
This looks good though. The start of this video is actually great reference for anyone making a 3d action game. Note how they're using keyframes to describe the intent of each action. Do that. Make animations that have only the important keyframes. In an attack find the moment it should impact and use that as a keyframe. Skip the rest for now since the animations won't be final anyway.

what i "enjoy doing" is programming, but i can't get paid for it so i constantly wonder what to do.
"laziness" is easy to solve if you just do what you like doing, but it doesn't solve lack of income.
i could code 24/7 and still make no income, because the market doesn't reward effort, it rewards supply for demands.
this is why i think the whole "just do it" mindset is absolute rubbish when it comes to making income.
yeah i can "just do it", but that doesn't guarantee any income, it just means i'm active all day.
there's people writing whole new game engines and it makes them 0 income, because nobody would pay for them. (e.g. c4 engine, leadwerks, ultra engine)
the reason i idle all day is always the same: it's when i think about money. and then i just freeze cause i have NO FUCKING IDEA what makes money.

this guy failing on his action game and animations reminded me of a youtube video that was like a guide on how to prototype animations and action combat

what I remember it had a yellow(?) prototype model type of character running around in a top-down/isometric view (I don't think it had camera control) and beating some enemies on the video and basically it was about how to make simple prototype animations with keyframes and how to make combat with them

for the life of me I can't find that video again I thought I had bookmarked it but I just can't find it

maybe everything turns into a competition over time. the only way to avoid competition is innovation, but over time everything has been discovered. e.g. in games you can't "cheese" the enemy anymore, when something depends on surprise strategies that everybody knows already. therefore you also have to improve your accuracy, reaction time, actions per second or whatever the game requires.
maybe it's the same with gamedev. at some point everything is discovered and you have to compete by making a more beautiful better rts, a more beautiful better shooter, a more beautiful better roguelike etc. etc.
you kinda see something very similar in the music industry, where you can't cheese the market anymore by just doing something new (e.g. hip hop or dubstep)

this is hard though, cause the best way to compete is having 100 million dollars to scale an existing thing lol.

actually i watched a video recently about some motivational speaker saying "you dont need new ideas, you can just take existing ones". and then she went on taking starbucks as an example and how it just scaled another coffee brand. lmao what a stupid example that was, she didn't even realize that especially as a newcomer you cannot scale, you can only innovate.

hot take but i think making a video game hasn't become easier in the last 10 years. just because engines added some graphics features it didn't change anything about the actual progress.
blenders improvements are nice, but seriously if you'd make 3D models in the 2016 version of blender it'd be almost the same experience. actually in 2016 it was also way easier to find cracked software online, somehow i only find dubious websites nowadays i dont trust. and the cracks always timebomb anyways.

on top of that hardware got more expensive, gamers has less money, steam got more competitive, kickstarter is dead, early access lost its trust too.

not even ai helps lmao.

The problem seemed to stem from the enemy hitting ITSELF for some reason whenever the player was struck for some reason, but that was probably me fucking myself over.
Also, poses and animations can only get you so far when the fundamental programming is done incorrectly, but for the life of me I do not know what I should even do, and fixing all that left me so emotionally and even physically drained that I wanna just curl up and cry in a corner for the rest of my life.

'Member that one anon who made a school shooter game? How did his gamedev career go again?
>>
why are music listeners so strongly divided into genres, yet gamers are just "gamers"?
you wouldn't expect a techno guy who takes drugs to listen to country music. yet we expect shooter plays to play cozy games.
ofc the concept of "target audiences" exists, but i feel like gamedevs don't really think in term of target audiences, but only in "trends".
but trends require the assumption that people play everything. that your roguelike fanatic will play a hole digging game if it's trending. or that your rts autist will play a card game if its trending.
maybe because music fans are more "visible"? you can probably imagine someone listening to rap music in your head, or someone listening to heavy metal, or someone listening to artsy indie music. but can you imagine a roguelike player or a city building player?

An issue with layers and the layer matrix. Set up the collisions roughly that enemy and player can collide with each other for regular collisions and enemy hitboxes can hit the player and player hitboxes can hit the enemy. Unless you want enemies to be able to hit each other at which point you need more complex shit and need to handle it in code.

Pose keyframe animations would help you identify the issues with your code because it would simplify the visual feedback while testing.

Well, no. Enemies aren't supposed to hit each other, so IDK why I even put that in.
Anyways, I think I've narrowed the problem down to how enemies react to getting hit. Animations aren't the problem, the problem is how I have a bunch of inconsistent states that I need to really spend some time unifying.
The question is what the hell I should even do to accomplish that, because this feels like absolute garbage for reasons I'm still unable to grasp with my peabrain.

people have and do compete on foot-on-ball games, there are many popular non-FIFA socker games.
and the reason they get dominated by FIFA is not because FIFA 0X games are objectively better but because they have official license to the FIFA brand and all the top celebrity sport brands and stars that encompasses.
what a dumb example that completely contradicts your point.

regular catbox is a fuck so you get litterbox
https://litter.catbox.moe/3233vk.gif
Do you see how the attacks always "hit" at a fixed point? I suspect most of your troubles stem from your hit detection being too accurate. If you look closely you can see the hitspark and enemy reaction lag behind the attack animation ever so slightly. This is most likely a sign that the attack only paints what gets hit and then when the active frames (active attack hitbox) are over it decides that the enemy gets hit. This probably means that if you have attacks with lots of active frames (>7f/120ms) you will have to tone them down to something closer to 3f/50ms.

Nope it's just one room and a camera in the mirror.

Originally I had a regular camera and was fucking around with FOV to fake movement towards the mirror, but that wasn't right. I realized I need a Fulstrum camera, not a perspective one. While I was reading up on Fulstrum projections, I found out that there's already a tutorial online for this:

https://youtu.be/4MmCJvyfXqM?t=2976
(btw no one asked, but the Marry-Kate and Ashley one was waayy better than the Bratz game).

Modern AAA games allegedly don't do it since it too hard to render. Let's say that's true. What's funny is that Star Citizen tries and fails. There is no depth to their mirror, more like a flat video on a screen:

gamedev is so high effort that trends could be interpreted more as "what do gamedevs like to work on" rather than "what do gamers love to play right now". there's probably a bunch of games that would explode in popularity, but there are no devs working on them.
but this has always been the case. ofc consumers choose products, but the producers also always dictated culture.
nobody asked for america's got talent, someone made it and people resonated with it. if they'd have made something else, something else would be popular.

Yeah, I can't remember playing DMC and the enemies being juggled in the air at different intervals, like if I swing from the right to left I would expect the rightmost enemy to get hit first but I think all of them get hit at the same time. Logically it would make sense but there are certain things that feel wrong to people despite making perfect sense. Fall damage is one of them, unless you fall 100ft players will think it's lame if you take significant fall damage.

A drop of juice from this fucking tangerine went down the wrong pipe and I spent 10 minutes coughing my lungs out. It never happened with donuts, that's all I have to say.
144 days left. That's a nice number, but it's only 12x12 days which sounds concerning, even alarming. Looking at what I've done in the past 12 days, there's no way I can finish this game doing only 12 times that much. Shit. Yesterday I fixed 3 bugs which I found the day before, which suggests there's a ton of bugs if I'm finding them so easy. I also reduced the save game files by up to 90%. Today I'll be finishing up some necessary art and doing some UI. The game needs to look finished, so I can just stop whenever I need to and ship it.

You gave me an idea.

How do you make a decision on what engine to go with?
Can you just plug stuff like https://github.com/jrouwe/JoltPhysics into any engine? I want some degree of physics simulation for active ragdolls, though I don't know how feasible this is to do as a solo dev with only beginner programming knowledge. Worst case I could just fake the physics by just having a complex string of if statements for various stagger animations and implementing a property like "force" to attacks that causes said different reactions instead of actually triggering active ragdolls.
