lots of "indie game" accounts automatically retweeting anything with the relevant hashtag, otherwise nothing

I can only dream of a success like that.
But he deserves it and more, he's definitely one of the most passionate indie devs I've seen like ever. Imagine doing military service 5 years, then 5 years of game design school, then 5 years of modeling and programing and only then starting to work on your dream military game (15 years later) with the intent to be the only game you'll make in your entire life. I get bored of my projects 2 years in.

An Non when will you finally make a shitty low effort AI-asset having INCREMENTAL GAME that inevitably makes 50K per month thanks to the plain as shit zombie brains the _hordes_ of normies out there possess, granting you permanent funding for any dream project you're currently thinking about?
Are you stupid? Name one valid excuse. Hard mode - one that makes sense and doesn't sound like a demented man came up with it.

Well, I think FTL, Into the Breach, etc are good case studies to look at. They have some interviews where they talk about their approach to making games and design choices that made them successful.

One of the things that stuck out to me as impressive was their ability to take an idea, and cut away everything extra so they were only focused on the core mechanics. Another good choice they make is always having everything you need on the screen. They had some lessons learned too about being upfront about what the "RNG" outcomes in a game would be.

I'd also like to make something like this. That studio and Zachtronics seem like very well oiled machines.

Many of the positive reviews have short durations for how long the game was played.
Like:
>0.3 hrs on record
>positive
For a game that costs more than $10.
It doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

But maybe the specific anime protagonist, and the "fan-serving" poses, in combination with the gameplay (including rarely seen and interesting warped-space mechanics) and the rest, had genuine appeal. Unlike Fiend Heart and Dungeon Watchers. And Monstergirl Hunters.

Interesting.

Some reviews do complain about the gameplay getting boring quickly.

Got an uphill battle ahead. Nobody in English speaking countries know how to play mahjong, not even the general idea, so it's intimidating. So this doesn't have strong appeal to us, despite the fantastic capsule. I would try bilibili and Chinese influencers, idk how that process goes though.
>>
>>563218982
>Outstanding wishlists: 60

Oof. How many Chinese/Japanese content creators did you reach out to? I suspect you won't get too much engagement from the English-speaking internet.

Some critique of the game itself: the props look way too "asset-flip PBR" for this genre. I'd slap some lower-res shader over everything.

Do you ever plan on releasing a demo?
>>
>>563219915
I also have no idea how to capture that segment of the chinese market. My hope at the moment is to reach out to all the taiwanese streamers on twitch and youtube (I have about 100 emails for those so far). Plus a few hundred japanese streamers that play mahjong.
Interestingly there is a split in the audiences - Japanese players are very familiar with mahjong, but most have never touched Balatro. The west obviously all know Balatro, but few know mahjong. Then the Chinese market has the best crossover since they love mahjong and are crazy for any roguelike deckbuilder.

Like there's demonic mahjong which has 3k+ reviews, then feng shui meowjong has ~300 reviews but the game is extremely unpolished.

I'm at 115 now, getting 1-6 per day. I haven't reached out to any content creators yet but I will do for the playtest (soon), demo (in the june nextfest), and then launch.
I want a new trailer first before I put together a presskit and see if I can get some traction with any gaming press.

Good question. If you got a trojan, they've got your session data which means if you've got access from your browser, then they do too.
If service is poorly designed and they know your password, it allows them to change mail, from that point it's pretty easy to do the rest.

indies managed to turn gaming into mobile-tier slop. thank you. instead of terraria, don't starve, kenshi, factorio, oxygen not included, 7daystodie, project zomboid and subnautica, now all gaming is "hehe incremental slop with gambling", "hehe another rng card game", "hehe friendslop lololol".
they basically turned gaming into a joke. it's like taking a warrior and putting him into a pink dress with lipstick and clown nose.
absolutely disgusting. and even gamers with soul start to justify it by saying "it makes money". what a disgusting world we live in right now.

setting the bar too high is the reason of 99% of all modern mental health problems.
people feel too ugly, too unfit, too dumb, too uncreative, too untalented, too asocial, too unsexy, too annoying, too boring etc. etc.
why? cause media showed us how high the bar can go up.

actually watched a documentary about an older guy who makes paintings recently and he just draws some classical architecture. he's so chill, the vibe is so pure and relaxing. and his paintings sell. his only bar is himself. and on top of that he doesn't even think competitive, he just wants to get into the flow zone. which is impossible if you set the bar too high. nobody would play mobas if you were matched against the best players in the world every match. you'd just get frustrated (and they'd get bored).

but that being said, even making a normal living with gamedev is a very high bar if you start from scratch.

i think the only cure to lower that bar is turning off the internet and not consuming other peoples content. not even games.
i've noticed the same when making music. when my mind was blank i just had fun making sounds and trying out things. as soon as i looked for inspiration to make better music, my brain began to just overload and get desperate cause i didn't know how to exactly get their sound. and all sorts of other problems.

maybe the secret to success is finding a quiet place and embracing the silence and only comparing yourself to yourself from yesterday.

there is something related with the whole question "can you have success with gamedev?". which too many people try to answer by asking the internet. they'll never figure out if it works, cause the internet already told them it wont. (most people are fucking depressed and negative, because they are also frustrated by how high they've set the bar for themselves).

As a guy that is contributing to the problem, I completely agree.
The problem is that most gamers taste has legitimately gotten worse over time. Most gamers exclusively play live service slop. The people who actually buy indie games play them for 2-4 hours and move onto the next set of shiny keys dangled in front of their face.

I've love to be the exception and make a true work of art but i'm not capable of making a truly amazing game yet. And so in order to survive I have to focus on trend slop.

i don't have lack of motivation or discipline. i have lack of vision. i can't even formulate what i want to make.
i thought about quitting gamedev and just doing something different. but i also see no reason to dev, or to write, or to make software or websites, or to make music. everything exists. i don't see anything that "needs to be made".

i tried rebuilding and improving games i like in the past, but i'm totally over that nowadays. the biggest reason is that i've noticed that i'm really just rebuilding them, i have nothing to add, nothing to improve. it only feels good for some months to be productive and yesdev just to reach the point where you realize how stupid and pointless your project is.

a good example is so many people making a minecraft clone, yet nobody plays those. cause they add literally nothing. hytale might succeed cause they have the budget to scale (better art, better tools, more content etc.), but scaling is something for companies, not for solodevs.

i have literally no answer anymore. i'm completely out of ideas. there's only one thing i have in mind and that is to have bigger ideas. something like landing on the moon. just something that's impossible to do for me, but pushes me to try hard. cause making a minecraft clone doesn't push me at all, it just feels pointless.

how do you get inspired by yourself? vision boards? concept art?
i mean that it's easy to get inspired by another game cause you see the world, feel the atmosphere, engage in the gameplay.
but if you depend on other peoples work you'll always just be a hack. you need some way to get the same "inspiration" from your own ideas.
maybe the inspiration is the wrong word, i mean some sort of way to envision what it's gonna look/feel/play like. which is impossible to just simulate in your head.

it happened the same time i played less games. maybe we need fresh inspiration again.
i have a very strong tendency to favor the same old games all the time.
on top of that a lot of new games are inspired by my favorite games, therefore they dont create any fresh inspiration. (e.g. travelers rest is basically just stardew valley, hytale is just minecraft etc.)

but what i mean is, without fresh inspiration it wont work. i can sit on my ass for another decade believing some random vision will appear while staring at a blank paper, but it wont. i need to find new sources of inspiration.

damn dude. i started gamedev in jan. 2025 and have nothing to show for it. nothing but a few dozen concept arts and notepad files. i suppose i have severe ADHD. i have to force myself to work everyday, or the game will never get done. but looking at my future full of work feels like staring down the barrel of a gun. i won't get to relax anymore, life will be work all the time for the next few years. and even if i succeed, i will be 30 years old with no social life and no chance of getting a girl. of course, i'm young enough to dick around in thailand for 1 year and its fine. but if you have to eventually lock in anyway and work super hard, isn't it pointless? if there's no escaping a life full of work, shouldn't we simply learn to embrace working 24/7 like japanese people? i don't get it. when I'm actually working, i can't say i'm happy, but i'm not unhappy either. time just passes in a blur. that seems like a waste of life to me, but if it's what i have to do to make something amazing, maybe that's just something i have to accept.

i do gamedev for over 10 years now and all i learned was out of pure interest, not because i wanted to make money. i dunno why, but i just had this urge to learn scripting in unity. also some c++ stuff trying to make my own engine. i rarely learned anything because i wanted to make money with it.
that being said i dont make any money with gamedev. but it proves that you need a better motivation than money to make any progress.
if i wasn't so incapable of art i'd have a game already.

Indeed it looks too slow for an incremental game. Like maybe the pacing is fine but visually it doesn't excite the audience and we're talking about a genre that's often worse dopamine slop than roguelites.

>>563221075
It could be that the game didn't satisfy incremental sloppers nor farming simmers. It might have done better if the dev went harder on one or the other.

>>563222007
>it also sucks that if you google "seedrun" they think you mean speedrun kek

>>563235957
>>563239120
People are more miserable than ever. Gaming reflects that. Instead of dreaming and immersing themselves in fantasy, be it through games or whatever, they're indulging in hedonism. Whatever gives people a dopamine high is popular. That's why roguelites got big and that's why incrementals are doing the same.

People are also poorer which reflects pricing of games and the popularity of really cheap games that people don't feel bad about buying even if they don't end up playing them that much.
>>
somehow i always measure stuff by efficiency and not by quality. basically if something takes too long or i don't have efficient ways to do it or it may not be used, i discard it. maybe i need to start realizing that making good art is wasteful process and not like programming where you try to milk the most performance per frame.

Monster catcher genre is actually a shitty one to take on as an indie. You need a fuckton of art for the monster designs. Even if you don't animate them it's a lot and they will be compared to old pokemon designs in quality. You need to be really good at designing them if you want your monster catcher game to have appeal.

>>563245825
You are unlikely to be able to make a good incremental game if you don't understand the genre.

basically any game that maybe could have been decent on mobile is ruined by the monetization and how it affected the game's design

with PC "mobile tier" games you pay once and play as much as you like and the design isn't fucked because they looked for places to insert payments into

so like, operating unde the assumption that I already have a decent idea of what my game is going to be and how it's going to work, what is the first thing you do when you start up unity/ue/godot/whatever for the first time in order to get started on the game? spawn a cube and write code to make it move? what's the first building block? in pico 8 you don't have much in terms of tools so there's pretty much nothing to do than draw a sprite, spawn it in the frame and then program it to do the things you want, but I suppose you could also start with tilesets or whatever

>>
>>563266373
I'm not trying to make you ask me for help, I'm still surprised you weren't curious enough to ask though
here's what I'm saying:
focusing on new attacks and animation is not what I would personally focus on
I recommend focusing on first understanding which kind of gameplay you want
I already saw the stuff about the suggested games and computer hardware and whatever, I don't feel it's necessary to play one of them, but identifying on your own what kind of gameplay you want is important
for example, "hack and slash" where there are lots of enemies and the player is strong, or, less enemies where each individual enemy is more complex and requires player skill and attention
the thing is, your game is a mix of both of those styles which comes across to me as not very fun
the enemy acts like a hack and slash enemy, as in, no regard for it's own life and meant to attack in a group of 30 enemies to hide how uninteresting the enemy is (I'm not insulting, I'm giving real critique)
>>
>>563221570
lol stop crying and face the reality
>>
>>563266693
I'm trying to create enemies that are very aggressive and attack in groups, thus forcing the player to navigate tight windows.
Sort of like Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 because those are literally the only real hack and slashes (Souls shit can go eat a fat dick, it's as much a hack and slash as a Zelda game is) I can remotely think of where the enemies are actually aggressive and trying to kill you, thus justifying your expansive moveset.
As you can see, I'm barely a 10th of the way there, but I'll figure out something.
I have a backstep and circle routine for the enemy that allows it to choose "Back away" or "Circle the player I'm chasing" as well as attack/approach. The higher the aggression value, the more it prioritizes an aggressive pattern.
Also, you described hack and slash games like those as "For 7-12 year olds." So maybe don't act surprised when I'm not accepting critique from someone who has voiced open disdain for the genre I'm going for.

>>
>>563267541
Maybe i’m mistaking you for someone else.
My end goal is pretty much a combat system where you having an expansive moveset is less a method to style on enemies and more a way to make absolutely certain you’re not dead and they are as dead as possible.
If you aren’t juggling the shit out of enemies, they’re going to get right back to trying to kill you on sight with minimal courtesy.

I think I nailed the 3d top down feel and the grid based interaction system(data driven). Do you think it has any potential? Currently, most of the assets are ripped models and asset store bought. Progress has been inconsistent because of full time job and life in general.
>>
Foo depends on Bar during initialisation. In Foo, I want to use the OnEnable event to do something like

barInstance.bazInstance.OnSomethingHappening += DoStuffInFooClass();

but I can't because "bazInstance" will null because bar hasn't finished initialising during the OnEnable event. It's not possible to get the Baz instance directly from Foo. Usually what I do is add a callback in Bar when it's done initialising but it's a pain in the butt, and quite spaghetti.

Do you guys have ideas on what to do during these situations?

I started in 2015.
Quit my job to dev full time in 2022.
Still no game. Every day is suffering.
But the pain of not having a game is greater than the pain of working on my game, so I keep going.
>even if i succeed, i will be 30 years old with no social life and no chance of getting a girl.
Yeah that's me, except I haven't even succeeded. (And there's no guarantee I will.)
You should definitely try to connect with people more while you're still young. Even in game dev context, going to conventions, meetups, participating in game jams where people team up, etc. I really wish I was doing this with someone, but it just wasn't in the cards for me, fate deemed I have to suffer alone at first.

yes I see that, and there's nothing wrong with that
however, what I'm saying is I would say the "early prototyping focus" is important to decide where on the "spectrum" of those styles the enemy should be in, for example the enemy at 40 minutes in my video, and the enemy in your video are bosses, however I would say designing the regular enemies first is a good idea, especially since you said the enemies are going to attack as groups
right now the enemy reminds me of the bird enemy from "outward"
I'm not saying you're doing anything wrong, only that the focus seems like you're overcomplicating things for yourself, I'm genuinely trying to help
essentially, there's nothing wrong with the end goal, but putting together a solid gameplay loop with one attack and one group of enemies, and one boss and then adding attacks to the player/enemies as they go, similar to how the player might find more advanced enemies and unlock attacks as they play
there's nothing wrong with the way you're doing things, however it's a lot easier to get a feel for a prototype this way, obviously other devs might have varying ideals, but I would say it's unlikely anyone would say what I'm suggesting is not an easier route to a satisfying outcome

>is it to prevent hurting my feelings or is it your lack of respect for the genre?
It's more like how I generally feel about gamedev and genres. If you don't like or don't *get* a genre how likely are you to be able to make a good game in that genre. I suppose there is a possibility that such a person could discover something new about a genre if he tried to make it something he finds fun but it could also end up being something people who like the genre do not like.

>I feel as if i can succeed making an incremental while having no respect for it.
I guess there is a difference between having no respect for it and understanding why people like it.

the different layers of the unity animation system is not simple for beginners
a few posters have already suggested using programming with a state machine, but I feel like it's fine to keep using the animator since you already have so much progress there and it's a good way to learn
I really feel like you should stop adding more attacks though
I doubt you want me to make an analogy for another genre or something so I'm only going to say it's too early to add more attacks, it's easily possible to make the combat feel good with only one attack/combo first

I have over a decade of experience, and I disagree
making the game feel good first is the priority
making something work is not mutually exclusive to that priority, it's also important for things to work for them to feel good

It looks functional but it is nothing special. At first glance it reminds me of some 2d top-down open world survival crafter on Steam, Tinkerlands, The Survivalists, Necesse, Core Keeper, Don't Starve even. That's just to name a few. There are a lot of them.

What is your game going to do that those games don't do? 3d could be a selling point but can you make good 3d assets?
>>
my entire gameplay system is built around the player character using a spear for a weapon, but how do I make that make sense inside the game. like "why can't I pick this dead enemy's sword and use that?" especially in situations where it would look like a sword or something would be more convenient.
"le legendary weapon" is the only explanation I can come up with but that's kind of lame. and I don't like the theme of conjured weapons (they disappear when enemies die)
and if I give all enemies rusted or makeshift weapons that it would be reasonable not to want to pick up, then I'd run into the problem of "how were these things able to take over and be a threat in thr first place?"

>>
>>563269146
>>563269940
yes, so now that we agree, I would suggest focusing on the gameplay before "we" add anything new
the most important things I'm seeing right now are only two things:
the camera feels jarring to watch, and possibly worse while playing, which is specifically from how close to the enemy the camera gets, and how the enemy is able to go to the side of the camera, half out of view
and then, reworking the distance the enemy tries to maintain from the player between attacks might help a lot
obviously do whatever you want, it's your game
I'm helping since you're one of the only ones posting consistent progress recently, that's the only motivation

for example, the enemy would do one combo or string of attacks, maybe 3 as an example
and then a chance to either do a next combo or move away for random 0.3~0.7 seconds
like combo A/B/C exist:
"A or B" > (A) > "move away, B or C" > ("B") > "A or move away"
this creates rhythm and can be specific to each individual enemy
as for the camera, maybe considering it as a "hydraulic bar" rather than on rails might have a nicer effect, however I'm not sure what kind of view you want in the game
I don't want to dictate what you're doing, but I'm giving the advice based on what I would do if I was working on that specific project
>>
>>563271826
I don't really understand why you would do it that way specifically other than to prove to yourself you can do it I guess. This really seems like a problem you've conjured up for yourself, most obvious for me would be to just keep them separate but attach the smaller asteroid to the bigger and keep its position/rotation relative to the parent. I actually don't know what pixel perfect collision is, are you talking about this https://github.com/FinlayTheBerry/Unity2DPixelPerfectCollider ?
I guess I have to mention that I'm not actually using Unity's collision physics here, Physics2D.FindNewContacts would absolutely nuke my framerate so I put everything on a non-colliding layer and I'm detecting overlaps and adding physics manually.

>>563273510
The previous video was an extreme scenario with multiple collisions in a short amount of time and asteroids' rotations spazzing out because they couldn't decide who to snap to. This is just a lot simpler, ,they can properly estimate how long their collision would take so it looks a lot cleaner.

It's kind of the same as what you're doing now, but you can use the tiles for the "map" or world itself, then you can chunk your asteroids into "tiles" but when resolving collisions you can narrow down to the specific chunks involved by comparing positions and then marching through individual pixels from bitmap mask. You're just checking if pixels are overlapping on each mask, amask is just white/transparent or however you wanna do it, one solid color indicating where the collision is. This means it's also something that isn't impossible to generate or add dynamically.

I have recently decided that I will make puzzle games because I can't into art and don't want to team up and I am better at abstract thought than aesthetics (although I still hope to make something that is visually appealing). Many of my past gamedev came to a halt in no small parts due to the requirement of visual asset production in large quantities. I have now started playing many games in this genre to understand how it works and how these games are played and enjoyed. I hope I will be able to craft interesting puzzles for people to enjoy.
Based on my observation so far I do believe there is a market for good puzzle games, the low revenue statistic is simply skewed by a large volume of lower quality games (which I may or may not contribute to in the future).

anyone have any idea how i can cull procedurally generated meshes from a set point (NOT the camera) that get rendered with graphics.drawmesh? im using unity btw

i cant find any resources on the topic outside of
>hurr! just use.. le built on occulusion culler that only works with static pre-baked meshes..?
>erm.. why not just... cull anything that isnt in le camera..?
>have you tried... ze hyper inefficient and inaccurate raycast that also relies solely on colliders..?
none are valid solutions

i want to render everything that would be visible around a certain point, and not render anything that wouldnt be visible from it. so like if you have a big dome, it would render all the parts of the dome but not anything outside of it, or the point is outside the dome it would only render the parts that are visible from the point

Time is part of the stats in my game and I'm storing stats in a list of {statId, intValue}. Would it be wrong to keep time in such a list. Because every frame it has to go through the list and fine statId of Time and set its value, instead of simply writing timePlayed += Time.deltaTime;

Which two are same? Do you mean using a variable directly and dictionary? Right now I'm using List instead of Dictionary because Unity doesn't serialize it. So if I load the savedata and put it in a Dictionary then there would be two copies of all the stats. That why I didn't want to use it. And I don't know a solution for it.
