Sonic & Amy's relationship is not complicated. Sonic likes Amy, but doesn't wanna be in a relationship because he values his freedom above all else. That will never change. Amy chasing after Sonic all the time is what makes it a relationship in a way that works for Sonic without compromising his own core character traits. That's what separates Sonamy from any other Sonic ship, because Amy is specifically built for Sonic's anti-relationship nature as part of the ship itself and her own personality around it. Anything else requires changing Sonic to make the ship work. Some interpretations of Sonamy by fans do make that same mistake by leaning too overtly into trying to make them like a traditional couple, but that is not what 'Sonamy' really is.
