I HAVE TO write it over because I first did it with rigidbodies and it didn't work for my gameplay or it would have been too much hassle to manage the physics all the time. Then I remade it with character controller and that works a lot better but character controller component in unity is based on capsule colliders and my gameplay kinda needs a box collider on the characters so that's fucked. I need to rewrite it AGAIN for a fully custom collision system so I can use box colliders without rigidbody physics fucking up the gameplay. I kinda just want to work on other mechanics rather than doing this again but I really should just bite down and do it.

Blogpost follows, ignore.
Yesterday an anon posted a pic of Pepe with french toast on his head, so I wanted to eat french toast so I made it for the first time ever. It turned out okay (delicious actually, but I have low standards for deliciousness), if a bit burnt and I didn't have the right kind of stale bread.
A couple of days ago I started writing down things a lot more liberally on my to-do list. I realized I was avoiding facing really how much work needs to be done on my game, and the list grew by about 2x in one day. It was demoralizing at first, but then I started feeling better about it. The work went from some murky lovecraftian horror lurking in the future to a (really long) list of chores, each about as intimidating as a clogged shitter is to a plumber. No challenges except time management. Speaking of, 138 days left, I owe 20 hours of work to my game. Today I'll be implementing dynamic mesh attachments and fixing bugs.

No, i'm cooked.

I'm a new grad with a horrible employment history wondering if its worth grinding leetcode to prepare for an interview i might not even get. Literally feels like im throwing away time.

I dont even care for tech anyway besides the money, but I just don't cut it. I just dont feel like doing it...but then i wasted 4 years of school and am going to miss the tiny window that i have to get a job with the "new grad" status.

it feels like a waste to do it, and it also feels like a waste not to do it.

i just wanna make a game.

When I hear people online debating whether or not they should quit their job, I never hear anyone mention skill or experience.
For some reason in this field everyone equates a beginner that is not proficient at anything and needs to look up tutorials for everything, and an experienced developer that worked in the industry and released games.
All the stories you hear online of people quitting their jobs is from absolute beginners stuck in the learning phase with nothing to show for it, no game.

So which one are you? Where's your game?
>Developing after work is impossible either, because I lack the motivation after work, and feel like I need to recover from burning out.
This is massive cope. Show me your Steam last 2 week activity nigger. You probably have at least 30 hours that could have been spent on your game.
And here's the TRVKE: if you don't enjoy working on your game in your spare time like you enjoy playing videogames, quitting your job isn't gonna magically boost your productivity.

He got away with it with his second game. Changed studio name to escape the bad rep. Wanderbots himself praised it for not using AI art lmao. Never listen to your "heart". It exists to get you to try to put your dick in that girl you encounter in the savanna. It doesn't know anything about the job market or selling games.

>Developing after work is impossible
What I'd advise is to reconsider what you consider "impossible". It's very hard, but it can be made easier. You could work really hard on weekends or you could work an hour or two every day BEFORE work (inb4 waking up at X o'clock is impossible).
Should you quit your job to make a game?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWC9WswFdRo

>>563939204
>When I hear people online debating whether or not they should quit their job, I never hear anyone mention skill or experience.
Because skills and experience are irrelevant for success. Not merely unimportant but completely irrelevant (once you clear a very low bar, like tutorial-level skills). Your first game is as likely to be successful as your second or third or twenty third game.
We're in the entertainment business. Saying skills matter is like saying Justin Bieber at 16 was one of the most skillful musicians in the world.
>>
>>563936840
I'm the retard version of you that quit their job. It's not worth it. You can do both. If you can't do both, you're not going to work hard enough on the game to justify being unemployed. Trust me. (unless you've done this in the past, and trust yourself to be your own boss, but youre on /agdg/ so the chance of u being a nodev is up thrice fold)

Why not get a different job?

ALSO, are you devving a game rn? if you arent actively developing a game, dont quit your job for an idea.

Most game ideas ARE GOOD, but impossible to execute. it's a trap, and youll feel like a retard. Great Games are a mixture of high appeal, high cohesion, and SIMPLICITY! it's a very small overlap if this were a venn diagram.

holy based. I've actually never heard this opinion before, but youre right.

But i believe the bar is higher. I really do believe games have to clear a bar of quality, or else you will instantly flop. Which bars depend on the genre you're in. But the bars are very easy to see.

ALSO, does anyone not believe in the "indie renaissance" that redditors speak of?
I only think the game industry is going to get flooded with perfectly scoped slop that will only hurt everyone involved.

This is massive beginner cope. Skill directly translates into game quality in this field, from programming, game feel, design, art, sound.. everything. Skill also directly translates into speed. Speed means more iterations, more features, more polish. Even if a beginner was able to achieve the same level of quality (big if), if it would take 10x the time to do so, then I would argue that's a lack of skill.
The Justin Bieber comparison is stupid because he got famous for being good looking and a personality, HE is the product. Doesn't work in gamedev, your game is your product.

Dev speed is definitely a skill. Some people can whip up progress at insane speeds. A newbie would be unlikely to be able to do that unless it's the sort of beginner's passion where you keep doing it because it's new and you spend too many hours on it per day and even then the quality of his work wouldn't match up.

definitely, but once your game reaches a high quality baseline, you can easily completely derail your project or waste years of dev time obsessing over unproductive complaints from game critics who might look at an RPG you're making and say "this game will fail because i wish it was a visual novel, add more dialogue, rework the combat system, remove the upgrades, change the art style, this shit is ass"
it's good to get genuine feedback that will help fix holes in your game's design that you failed to identify, but bending the knee to criticism from people who don't even enjoy the type of game you're making is the worst thing you can do, alongside being scared of finishing your game because you don't want to see negative reviews from mentally ill freaks who wish every game on steam was as complex as dwarf fortress
pointless ramble, obvious advice on my behalf, but this is something i think indie devs can suffer from
>what about the negative reviews?? they'll drive away sales...
don't worry about that, just make sure it's designed for your target audience, even a perfect game would suffer complaints

you can retake older ideas when you have become better.

I've been keeping some side projects for years in my mind, and tried them multiple times, because my skills improve.

Eventually you become so skilled that you can sucessfully make them.

It's a lot like giving up on lifting a car for a few years until you can lift 500 pounds easily later in the gym.

Some projects naturally require skills and talent you don't currently have, so is ok to left them rest for a couple years.

They aren't doing the things that develop that skill. Honestly it's a hard one. There's definitely devs who are consistently good at it and others who sometimes hit the mark but other times miss it wildly. It's like a mix of making the right game at the right time but also being able to anticipate trend developments. Or just making games that are always welcome, there's those as well. Like if you make a game that's not trendy but has appeal in any year then it will sell. Maybe it could have sold better at a better time but it still sold.

>>563962841
It's getting harder and harder for beginners to catch up in any industry. There is no value in entry level anymore.
>>
>>563962841
Skills do get rusty if you don't use them. After a point I think it's more maintaining them than increasing them. Beginners need to work hard to catch up but you don't need to be as good as someone else to make a good game. There's a lot of variety on what can be a good game.

A truke that /agdg/cunts are not ready for:
GaaS service won. Gamercattle are so brainrotted by live service that they demand every game receive weekly, daily, or hourly content updates forever. Forever Games are the standard now. Hobbyist indies are held to this standard and are expected to make multiplayer Forever Games with content roadmaps, dailies, post-launch support, endgame content, battle passes, Seasonal Drops, Raids, localization in every language, and Android support. DO NOT release your game and say it's finished. Gamergoycattle will review bomb your game because you abandoned it and your legacy will be those "[SAD NEWS] Anon's Game Flopped!" steam chart threads on /v/. You're supposed to drag development out for as long as possible like WEG devs and milk gamergoys for all they're worth through Early Access or Patreonbux or whatever. Will they? Because most devs just cuck out to the gamercattle instead of standing up for themselves. Which only further reinforces such beliefs.
We've already been through this with game pricing, you can't price your game above $10 even if it's a full-on 3D RPG with hundreds of hours worth of content because Valve systematically taught gamercattle to expect low prices through sales and regional pricing, and gamedevs did not object to any of that in any way.

I genuinely believe Steam is no longer an option for gamedevs that respect themselves too much to be subject to various humiliation rituals. Its either forge your own path, or wait for the industry to collapse under its own weight. I know that I am right because this sentiment is not at all limited to just video games. These are some truly fucked times and the pigs who refuse to look up from their troughs are the only thing still holding it together.

what exactly classifies a game as an assetflip? I had a plan to buy like 80-90% of my 3d assets and make the last 10% of unique stuff myself as needed because it's way too time consuming otherwise. Todd Howard was hired by Bethesda Softworks in 1994 after repeatedly visiting their offices to ask for a job. While still a student at the College of William & Mary, he visited Bethesda's Rockville, Maryland offices on Martin Luther King Jr. Day to request employment but was told to finish school first.

After graduating in 1993, he returned to apply for a position but was rejected again due to a lack of available openings. To bridge the gap, Howard took a job at a smaller game company in Yorktown, Virginia, which allowed him to attend industry events like the Consumer Electronics Show where he continued to approach Bethesda to request a role.

His persistence finally paid off when Bethesda Softworks recruited him as a producer in 1994. His first official credit with the company was as a producer and designer for The Terminator: Future Shock, released in 1995.

Gen X gamedevs had it the easiest out of any generation.
They could show up and get a job working for the biggest companies or go walk to the bank and ask for a loan to start their own studio and the bank would just do it.
Randy Linden got started by making an amiga port of Dragon's Lair at 17. All he had to do was call the Don Bluth company and say he had a prototype. They gave him enough money to hire an entire team to finish it.
No one had it easier before or after.

>While at Harvard, Newell visited his brother at Microsoft, which was not yet a major software developer. At the suggestion of the Microsoft executive Steve Ballmer, he dropped out of Harvard and began working at Microsoft. Newell said later that Microsoft was the best place in the world to learn to program at the time.
>Inspired by Michael Abrash, who left Microsoft to work on the game Quake at id, Newell and another employee, Mike Harrington, left Microsoft to found the video game company Valve on August 24, 1996. Newell opted to found Valve instead of retiring as he felt working with "other really smart, motivated, socially orientated people to create product that would affect millions of other people" would be more fun.

Alright bros I'm working on aquatic npcs now
Haven't decided on the final design for this guy yet but I have some ideas in mind. They're going to be hanging out off shore to stop you from swimming out too far.
He isn't supposed to ever sit still in the water though, he should be constantly circling around the pond but he's getting stuck on the floor or something lol so I'll have to fix that.

Tell that to the shartyfags, jealous that they weren't the creators of "imageboard culture", to "correctly" use that term then.
You can tell a lot about someone by their attitudes/vocabolary because most people don't understand how much they are a product of their time and place, in the same way as medieval peasants told to believe witches were real.
A lot of people online talk about anything as if
>It was either created very recently
>Or as if they just heard about it a short time ago
Everything nowadays is talked in an "updated/current context" and it's not just zoomers/newfags/normies etc, even comforming oldfags and those that should know better and could've said something new still approach subjects the same way as anyone else.
That's why memes are an actual disease: Even guys that bitched about rage comics in 2012 are now posting wojaks and saying "basedsloppill" words.

>gamedev is mostly about luck
I thought you guys already knew.
Gamedev is like starting a rock band.
It doesn't matter how good your band is, or the music you wrote are.
What matters is you being in the right place at the right time.

Also, it's a game of probability.
Instead of releasing a medium size game in 3-5 years, you should release 3-5 games in a year.
So now instead of 1 chance of success in 5 years, you have 5 chance to success every year.

Nigger, the internet was mostly used by nerds but it wasn't just exclusive to imageboards and the like.
Fucking Newgrounds had people make shit just to fuck with submissions.
Trolling as a concept was universal online, almost everyone had their personal experience with it from either side.
>A lot of the epstein files allude to that. Was fun whilst it lasted though.
No, people just took it out of context because nobody takes Epstein shit seriously.
If you wanna go that far, might as well mention how a good portion of SomethingAwful guys got troll's remorse and how that could be linked to the culture wars.

>Well people don't like them in general
Yes, which is why they take pedophilia very seriously unlike a certain dragon (Or most people online apparently).
Your reaction to an actual pedophile should be calling the cops immediately and scream "someone think of the children" because logically, you do believe children are at risk and that is a bad thing.
Otherwise, maybe you don't actually believe someone is a pedo if you react in a less serious manner.

New monster model mostly complete. Still have a few things to tighten up and a few props to add, but the base model and texture is good.

Well, I do it in my spare time, but most of my dev time on the game has been learning to model, rig, texture, materials, animate and stuff like that.

Much to they annoyance of anyone that's been paying a lick of attention when I post here, I've been at it for ~4 years. Lots of practice and EXTREMELY shitty models in the rear view. A good bit of that time was just learning the tools like blender and gimp.

Keep at it, you'll get there!

Game is GloamSnarl if you're interested in dungeon crawlers.

May I ask what techniques you use for your models?

Certainly. PS2 level fidelity at any sort of scale is going to be difficult if you don't have a team.

If you don't already have a VERY good grasp on your tool of choice (blender is nice), sit down and go through tutorial hell on the basics until you understand layout, modelling, shading, model paint, and UV wrapping.

Absolute best way to come to grips with the modelling style is to find base models of the poly count and style you want to work in. Polycount is a great resource for references and general rules: https://polycount.com/bestof/frontpage
Additionally Models resource is VERY helpful:
https://models.spriters-resource.com/playstation_2/

After picking apart a few models and making a few basic props (crates, barrels, simple buildings) you'll have a good handle on stuff.

For my workflow, the model I posted took ~12 hrs of work between the base model, textures, materials, rigging, and a dumb idle anim.

Good luck, god speed, and have fun!

The color of the cubes changes color with a shader using their world position as reference.
The cubes are using a For loop in a C# script to move all the 2500 cubes, currently I am learning about compute shader which its purpose is to make heavy calculations in the gpu instead of the cpu.

HLSL is the used by Unity for URP, it also uses Shaderlabs language.

i want to make a 3d first person open world sandbox game like Rust except it takes place entirely in the astral realm in zero gravity. the astral realm is similar to space except magical not scientific. there's castles floating in it and crazy shit like that, the entire game is flying around. there's portals and giant lovecraftian octopus demons etc. since its not space and not scientific i can pretty much put whatever crazy shit in the void. it has pretty nebula clouds everywhere and stuff. different zones of the void have different laws of reality and such
>>
>>564032138
unlike Rust you cant really permanently kill someone because they're already a dead spirit but you CAN cast them into lower realms (there will be at least 7 realms) and lower realms are a bit hard to get out of back to higher realms but they're not a punishment they're all interesting in their own ways. but if you are in a higher realm and you want some asshole gone from it then beat them and cast them into the lower realms and its almost the same as killing them (from the realm you inhabit)

>Instead of releasing a medium size game in 3-5 years, you should release 3-5 games in a year.
>So now instead of 1 chance of success in 5 years, you have 5 chance to success every year.

That's the kind of advice you hear from people that don't know anything but want to sound smart and you, who also know nothing and can't think for yourself, takes it as granted because it's harsh, and cool, so it must be true, right?

5 games releases of 0 worth is still, at the end of the day, 0. You can release several trash "projects", wasting time and money at each of them. Your chances aren't linear. You're not actually pulling a lever at a deterministic slot machice— reality doesn't work in heuristics. You will fail just as bad and be buried in a mountain of valueless slop.
