There's stuff that's iconic to Clannad that's actually only in the anime, and the anime and the game go together very well in a complementary sense. When I think of Clannad I think of both of them together rather than just one. I watched the anime first and I think it helped me enjoy the game more. Due to the length and how complicated it can get, it helped to already have some idea of the structure of the story, and I got to appreciate the depth it added and which things were changed for the better (or worse). There some things you can miss too that you might not know are there if you didn't watch the anime beforehand. Also with how central the MC is to the story (he's not a self-insert) I appreciated having him be a fully voiced and visible character, which is something you don't get in the VN.
