It's a 40k term they inherited from the Rogue Trader TTRPG which in turn inherited it from the tabletop 40k wargame. In 40k attacks have a "hit roll" and a "wound roll," and when you are rolling dice and talking to someone in person you naturally say "my Ork Boyz caused three wounds on your Space Marines with their attacks" or whatever. At which point the dice rolling duties transfer to the defensive player to make armor saves and such. So "Wounds" is a term you hear constantly in play. Most models in 40k die after receiving 1 wound, so they get wounded and die, but some are tougher and need to take two or three or more wounds to die. Those wounds are usually tracked by placing a die next to them that counts UP the number of inflicted wounds. This is because any non-marked models are assumed to be fully healthy. so having a "Wounds" stat that tells you something dies when you count up on a die that many wounds is very intuitive. Plus that's what GW chose back in the late 80s and its been that way for over 35 years. It's exactly like the term "Hit Points." Think of it as "Wound Points" if that makes it easier for you. It's a completely natural term for 40k players, but if you're new I can see how it feels weird because all the intermediate rolls are obscured and handled by the computer for you, so you lack all that context and so it feels disconnected. Nevertheless, it is a bit of terminology that helps to make the game and the TTRPG feel a bit more "40k-ish."

I expected the story to fall apart at the end like DOS2 and BG3 did, and was surprised that it was extremely tight and compelling until the end. It made me more excited for the new game, because before I thought the end falling apart was just how Larian unfortunately made games. But they’re actually very capable of sticking the landing.
