Do buffs and debuffs even work in Kyuaku Megami Tensei? When I played the FC version of 2 they were OP as fuck, you could even cripple the final bosses until they did 1 dmg to you. But here I've been spamming them and it feels like NOTHING happens at all, like they don't even work ONCE. WTF? I'm playing the fan translation if it makes a difference

The changes are attempting to make Devil Summoner more like its sequel, Soul Hackers, but DS is DS, it's not SH, I don't think it's fitting to try to make a bastard version like this.The only thing I wouldn't have minded is making it easier to raise the demon's loyalty especially in the case of the ones which loyalty only raise depending on the level difference with the protag meaning by the time they have good loyalty they're useless (with that said that's not a complete loss since you can use them for fusion and the loyalty carries over); which it did, but then allowing to save any time / anywhere (you could only do it once per run after the shop in the original) or upping the damage value of all your attacks is going too far.

Just a lot more choices around, and mainstream preferred game genres have changed since the 90s/2000s.The best bet I see is probably an indie or AA project that improves on the formula, lot of QoL updates, anti-frustration mechanics and fresh + interesting gameplay/premises. A part of the reason why blobbers play the way they do is because of the limitations of the time iirc. The main issues I tend to see with introducing non-blobber players are those things I mentioned, cut that out, clean things up and more people stick around for the rest.I see a lot of indie blobbers being made these days and there's always a little buzz around them. But never to the degree of becoming mainstream.
