The water association is probably because water is vital to life in a physical sense the way stories are vital to life in an emotional sense. There's also probably some inspiration from Earthbound, where the melodies you collect have Ness recall memories of being a baby, like a water of the womb thing. The melodies also connect him with the earth, and darkness seems to be the lifeblood of the earth in Deltarune.

YIIK is such a weird yet enduring game because more of it works than the author is often given credit for, and then a lot of the stuff that doesn't work how it was intended to actually wraps back around to reinforcing some of the game's ideas and goals.Part of why it got dogged on was the performance was genuinely really bad on release with crashes and awful load times. That has been reduced since. Some stuff that inspired outrage is genuinely baffling in retrospect. There's a grave in a graveyard that pays respects to Iwata, and people used that as an excuse to be mad at the game because it's an anachronism, but went further and acted like the game mentioning him at all was an insult somehow. People were looking for every reason possible to shit on the game in retrospect.The dev did crash out about the response and had trouble taking responsibility at first, but he was also lowkey right about some of the responses he was steaming about. It was one of those games getting lampooned by people who don't even play games but just jerk off to outrage at their computer. It's not perfect and it has a lot of flaws but the fact people still talk about it speaks to something.

I've hit ten Asgore's now with no sign of slowing down, but I'm still debating whether to disable all their "related" statuses so they can start dating one another freely or not. On the one hand I'm extremely curious to see what their kids might potentially look like (if two males even can in this game...?) with it potentially generating amusing combinations like FreshFellGore or something, but on the other hand it seems morally wrong to allow such intermingling when they're all technically the same person. I mean it's not like I'd force them to get married or anything like that and would just let the relationships blossom where they may, but even then I wouldn't really be giving them a choice regardless since so far it's only Asgore variants on the island anyway.
