Humans are easy to ignore compared to the brightly colored anthros, they don't distract your eye, and the kinds of humans you place in a location will tell you about that location. As others have said there is no actual cultural standard for anthros unless they're Echidnas, they're all just some vague white mix concept. In Sonic Adventure you can tell the game is in a Japan centric city because all the school children are in uniform and all of the adults are in business attire. You can tell Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog are in US inspired cities simply because of the president's appearance. You can tell Soleanna is a pretty upstanding and regal area due to the way the humans are dressed. Every single Blobian is either naked or wearing the most expressive clothes possible so they never actually tie into the world building. This is an extremely small detail but I think IDW genuinely feels lifeleless. I'll be the first to admit I don't get any value out of the "npc" unless they're sexy and if they're not sexy they're drawing my eye for no reason.Not a problem in Archie because Archie was less limited in the designs and you could have interesting freaks like Mammoth Mogul, and Archie just went the furry lorefag route with the anthro/mobian differences. In the games it's a different problems. Background mobians just objectively look like shit in the games except for Rush. I have nothing to break down there and I don't care about the lore, they just look terrible. Anything else would be better.

the funny thing about this debate is that it ultimately got reverted anyways. in all sonic media except idw and crossworlds (which just reuses assets for the npcs) humans are the main background characters again. Even Shadow generations due to the GUN soldiers. They dropped the entire concept everywhere except IDW. The Chaotix Casefiles uses humans. The manga uses humans. The channel stories use humans.
