In my pipe dream custom server, druids have beast pets, not hunters. The restoration talent tree would have a few talents for the pets. The beast mastery talent tree would be replaced with a melee talent tree, with survival retooled to be a tree for utility, movement and "RP" stuff like building camps and tracking.
