I've got a Japanese friend who kept urging me to play Dragon Quest, but I never really cared to.
I tried the demo for VII Reimagined the other day, and I get it now. The enemies are so cute. I'm almost tempted to buy a Switch 2 so I can play it and the I, II, and III remakes.

Seconding Abel. It's not amazing, but it feels a lot more like DQ than Dai does. It feels like DQ8 took some notes from Abel, and there's an episode that was very directly copied by DQ11. It's a shame the back half kind of sucks, but it's worth a try.

Have fun anon! The remakes of the 1, 2 and 3 are a bit different compared to the older versions but I still enjoyed them. Can't talk about the 7 remake because I didn't play it yet.

My main criticism of DQ6's job system was that you only really get to the top classes about 10 minutes before the end of the game. I would have assumed DQ7 would ease the requirements but somehow it manages to be worse about it despite being twice as long.

It's a shame. VI's system was cool but left a lot of room for improvement, and then VII made the absolute bare minimum tweaks without really improving it at all and then cut the available party members in half. Maybe Reimagined made it somewhat better but I still want to see a new game really try to do something cool with that system.

Reimagined is kind of better in some ways but overall not by much. The pacing of vocation EXP is way better, even with the option to reduce vocation EXP on, and skills being vocation-locked mixed with the dual-classing system means characters actually still feel different and the small cast feels a lot less restricting. Having no skill carryover is kind of a double-edged sword for obvious reasons though.

Honestly that's the only way you can make your emulator stand out these days. I'm generally not a fan, but I do like what it's doing with Mode 7 enhancements. The native widescreen mode doesn't look as bad as it usually does in other custom emulation forks either.

Where? All I caught was that he said he didn't think a modern remake or HD2D version wouldn't do Chrono Trigger justice, and that he was excited at the possibility of fans breathing life into the game with new graphical mods.
It sounded like he was just praising the ability of Super ZSNES to let people to go in and make graphical mods for games on a much higher level than what was ever possible before.
I think that, if the capabilities of SZNES mods were combined with an MSU-1 hack that adds the FMVs and Orchestral soundtrack, you'd have a run for Chrono Trigger Definitive Edition right there. Of course, that would all depend entirely on someone taking up the task of properly remastering the graphics.
And even then, it would still be subjective.
I think it's funny that we could potentially be entering a new era of romhacks that only work on ZSNES.
