That's not how it works. Good games will continue to be filtered by the userbase. AI slop games are not good games and so will continue to be buried, forever. AI slop will never overrun or take over any systems that are curated by users because PEOPLE are sick to death of slop. Only totally unmoderated systems can be destroyed by AI.

Even really loose systems like youtube still have comment sections that say "THIS IS SLOP" and users are able to quickly discern from the shitty AI voice acting and slop imagery that they stumbled into a slop video. They click away immediately and the video loses placement.

All curated systems destroy AI slop. It doesn't matter how much infinite AI slop is shoveled out, it's never going to change things. AI slop is dead. AI is officially a joke and everyone knows it except the cult members.

Just finished researching. Funding isn't based off something like in game ads, it is completely arbitrarily decided and the money comes from, the devs previous game Garry's Mod......yeah this doesn't sound good. On Roblox funding came from stuff you sell in your game, microtransactions. This on the other hand relys on Garry's arbitrarily decided metrics and how much he will choose to give you based off said metrics. I don't like this one month you might just need an average of 20k users playing for 20 hours to get $1000 for the month. The following year you the same amount of users and playtime generate $100. Why even take a chance with this???

years ago when I was young and didn't even have a bank account yet, I made an interesting game mode for a source game over a weekend simply from wanting to, not greed, not any selfish reasons, and setup a donation link where donations went straight to paying the server fee for me
people played, and donated to a free gamemode all on their own simply from me placing "if you want to help keep the server alive" in the chat infrequently
having said that, despite not making any money from that, people donated quite a lot and the server stayed alive

Nta but yeah except the problem for this is that this reduces the long term viability of this engine/game. If you filter between people who got it for (they are quite positive about it for obvious reasons) compared to people who paid a full 19.99 (sub 50% positive rating). This isn't a good sign for it and risks the entire engine just failing. People mess with it for a bit, leave, dont come back. Now youve got what 10k people who had access prerelease just goofing off in it screeching s&box is the future while people just go play on roblox instead lel

Gmod was the greatest advertisement ever made for source games so of course he has a lot of pull but the problem is Garry didn't actually do that much to earn his success. JBmod came before gmod and did most of the same shit (which is really just making it easy to use console commands). Garry just took the idea and got lucky by getting valve's endorsement and resources.
Jbmod never got officially sanctioned by valve because it was built using the leaked hl2 beta build and valve was completely ass blasted about everything related to that to the point where they didn't allow jbmod on steam for decades.

Blog post, don't read unless you're happy with your progress for today and don't have anything better to do.
So the last few days I was benchmarking how off my predictions are by taking items from my to-do list and comparing how long it'll take me to finish them vs what my estimates were. And it turns out I'm faster than I predicted. I did in 2 days what I thought would take me 3.5 days. Pretty good, right? The problem is in the last 2 days I added 7 days' worth of items to my to-do list, like "make game icon" and "make trailer" and "allow player to forfeit quests" and "support for multi-page documents".
So I don't know, there can't be an infinite number of items I could add to the list, right? I'm bound to run out eventually, right?
The current estimate for the to-do items is 84 days, I estimate I'll run out of money in 127 days.
I was hoping Steam would send me $100 this month but I got email from them telling me I'm a loser, so no bananas or other luxuries until I get some money from somewhere.

Sadly, a lot. Not with fidelity, but with how appealing it is.
Consider, the first time someone will see your game is from a screenshot or a trailer. So your first barrier to get a player is to intrigue with what you see.
Gameplay is primary, and "the only thing that counts" but if no one wants to even try your game, you lose before you even go into battle.

Don't let survivorship bias blind you or give you an excuse to be lazy. You need every trick you can think of to succeed. If you think the art of your game is shitty, you need to fix it, somehow.

3D is easier because it's more forgiving and less work but 2D might be easier to start with because you only need paint and time, it's a tradeoff. Alternatively if you don't care about mixels you can render from 3D to 2D pixelart. Unless you need a game asap I would try 3D because it gives you more leverage in the long run.

unity is an extremely stable engine and the reason why playing games made in unity is such a pleasure, because even if something fails in C#, the game doesn't immediately crash. also it makes it very easy to debug code. and ofc the engine itself gets thousands of bugfixes per year (bugs you never notice, yet they get fixed anyways).
yet, unreal engine has all those free assets, way better tutorial channels doing advanced stuff (seems to attract a specific kind of dev) and some really useful features out of the box, e.g. that you can easily update the navmesh at runtime and it does it in chunks, so it's very performant.

I think the trailer needs to reflect the actual "game" part of the game more at the front, the different game modes and objectives and stuff. I would also STRONGLY recommend making another map with a desert theme or something to provide visual variety. right now it feels more like a technical simulator than a game

I think the collisions should be more "explosive", a car slamming into the truck a truck at 40 should result in more than a little dent for both vehicles, at least for the camera

you're missing the forest for the trees. i never said that all publishers are bad (just most of them). if you find a good one that actually does marketing for you and even finances your dev then it's a good deal.
same with the engine(s), unity and unreal make you pay a tax, but that tax is at the expense of you not having to make an engine yourself or having 0 support.

my point is they're not NECESSARY to succeed. you can fairly easily succeed without both. without steam, on the other hand, success is only possible on paper. but to do that, you have to be a 1% of the 1%, so realistically this means nothing to most devs, since the odds are too improbable. and that's the problem.

Unfortunately the longest-lived games are the games that require multiplayer. Without the input of other humans it just isn't possible to stretch a game out very far. The most you'll get is maybe Terraria or Minecraft or Dwarf Fortress. Building sorts of games.
