I think the aesthetic similarities between Catti and FRIEND aren't because of any tangible connection between them, but because they'll be parallels to one another. Catti being "irrelevant" will actually be a plot point, she'll be jealous and frustrated because Noelle abandoned her in favor of Kris and Susie, who get to be the protagonists of the prophecy which her whole family and the town worships while Catti is left on sidelines. Even Jockington gets to be important to the prophecy somehow, but she doesn't. FRIEND will be an entity with a similar type of resentment over being left out, but who forced his way into the story at the expense of others. This also ties into FRIEND likely possessing the vessel.Kris is demon-themed and also forced themself into a narrative role they don't belong in, as another parallel. (Kris is a cat pretending to be a dog.) Susie has a similar desire to be a big important hero, but in her case she moved from an antagonist role (the dragon) to a protagonist one, rather than from side to main character. Still, a lot of parallels all around.

Something unexpected is going to happen with flower darkners in chapter 5. We've never seen a plant darkner before, which makes sense because plants are living things as opposed to inert matter. But we know that dark fountains can animate them in some way, because of the cactus darkner in chapter 3 that's kept hidden from our view. I don't really get it, but it's building up to something.
