I think I'm going to have to do the thing I was dreading the most from the moment I started this project:

I know how to do leaves without doing it manually, via a particle system and vertex groups.
Buildings?
Only thing I've been able to model was a fucking door

Heralds of Heroism
>Feedback:
I played it to the end and it was fun, replayed the last level trying to max out all skills but stopped short of actually doing that. But in its current state this is NGMI. It lack's something I can't put into words that other similar games do better. It doesn't help that the art quality is so low. And even then if the art was suddenly 9/10 it still lacks something deeper that would probably limit it to the 100-900 review range.
>Bugs:
There is a memory leak. It became noticeable early on but I kept playing. If I read it right, near the end of playing the sole Firefox tab for the game was taking almost 8000mb of memory. Even when I'd go back to the main menu the problem was not resolved.

I'll pay for sound effects, I wanted to include like .25 cent payments on my site to reveal content but small hats hate small payments. I honestly think if we could use micro transactions for shit like sprite sheets or whatever the NEET economy could flow a little better. Paying $1 for a song when you have thousands of songs just isn't feasible. You should pay like a cent or something. That way musicians aren't getting stolen from, they're getting thousands of cents on the dollar

My game is my opus magnum. Certain people write books. A certain man named Kant wrote the Critique of Pure Reason. It's a giant internally-consistent machine that runs on its own. A pure product of his spirit.
My game is also a giant machine running on its own. It's also a pure product of my spirit. It's my own Critique.
Nobody will look at the underlying code, but sometimes I imagine some fat nerdy type will look at it and gasp "Wow, that guy's a truly a genius." This alone is worth one hundred times more than one thousand Jeet and Troon or other non-sentients' reviews on Steam.

I take methylphenidate, since it doesn't have as much euphoria as vyvanse or adderall, and mix it with pregabalin.
It works pretty good, I'm able to concentrate for like 10 hours a day, sleep like a baby when it wears off, and pregabalin has, other than the relaxing properties, creativity and concentration enhancement too, also puts me in a good mood for the rest of the day.

Kinda wish I would have taken the drug-enhancement pill 10 years ago, I would have made it by now.

Have you all realized a difference between games and other software is with other software people gravitate to the most mature established one but with games they prefer, if possible, the newest ones?

That's one advantage games have over other software at least. Seems like all downsides in every other metric though, except that games are fun to use but in general other software is not.

Have you guys realized people treat potatoes and games differently? It is very interesting, both are made of atoms, yet people treat them so differently...
>>
>>565615292
And some may say that they do not gravitate to the newest games, that's why so many people play old games now, but actually that's because hardly anyone is making GOOD new games anymore, and people playing those old games is called "survivor bias" because those old games they play are the best old games that's why they survived. Another factor to old game's popularity is they're very cheap to buy. But if you account for all those other factors people still prefer new games when all other factors are equal.

Spent 12 hours nonstop to get this done today. I hope it's mostly bug free.

Input remapping works, but doesn't save the config if you restart.

If you experience slowdowns. There's a setting that changes tickrate from 240 to 60.

Also. I don't think anyone is beating this on their first sitting if at all. If you post proof of doing so and want to have a (SFW)name or some other little easter egg in the game, I can make it happen.

I'll try to play some games tomorrow.

Has anyone here has used any html5 tools? because I'm undecided between Phaser and Construct

>>565616303
If you already know HTML5/JS from a webdev bootcamp, I’d lean Phaser unless you specifically want a no-code/low-code editor workflow. Phaser is basically “make games with JavaScript,” so your existing skillset transfers directly, you can structure things like a normal code project, use npm/vite/typescript if you want, and you won’t be fighting the tool as much once the game gets custom. Construct is good if you want to prototype fast, make small arcade games, or avoid writing tons of boilerplate, but it can feel limiting if you actually like coding and want full control over weird systems, build pipeline, source control, custom shaders, etc. My advice would be: make the same tiny game in both, like a one-screen platformer or top-down shooter, and see which one annoys you less. For your background, Phaser is probably the safer long-term bet, Construct is the faster “get something moving today” option.

I'd recommend Phaser too before AI Coding Assistants got so incredibly effective. But now I recommend just asking your AI Assistant to get ThreeJS running for you and going full 3D instead of Phaser's 2D. But of course if you -want- 2D yeah Phaser is still the go-to
>>
>>565616650
how do i use ai?
>>
>>565616482
if you want to compare Dark Souls and Ableton Live while pretending to be deep, you go right on ahead
>>
>>565616476
Not to mention JS/HTML5/WebDev is what AI Coding Assistants are currently the best at.

I think Construct (and other things like it) should be avoided now because AI Assistants nearly render anything it provides redundant. Other things that render it redundant is you can just make your maps/levels in Tiled (or that better newer one I can't remember the name of, LDTK?), and that you can instantly test your pure HTML5 games in the browser with instant hot reloading etc. At that point, what does Construct/etc even offer? An AI Coding Assistant won't even be as familiar with something like Construct as compared to pure HTML5 which it is best at, and you will run into roadblocks more often.

The best one in my opinion right now is install Codex CLI and use it to with GPT 5.5 xHigh model (which it comes with. but you need a $20/month ChatGPT Plus subscription). Then you would open whatever Terminal is on your operating system (i use powershell since im on windows) and type "codex" which opens an AI Chat Window just like when you talk to it on your phone or browser except it has direct access to whatever folder you tell it your game should be in and so you talk to it like any mobile/browser AI and it will directly build your game for you and it's insanely effective.

Then if you ever want to manually tweak or view the game's code yourself just open that same folder in VSCode and do whatever you want to it

Why even have this setting if they are going to write Borderlands dialogue anyways.
>>
>>565616706
And the AI already knows to set up some easy to use commands to allow you to easily test your game, for example it will probably create an "npm run dev" command which means you just type "npm run dev" in a terminal and your browser opens with your game and you can play it and test it. it's much faster than unity for devspeed
>>
>>565617420

except unlike Halo from Halo the space marines are not purely technological, there's technology and "magic" from The Warp dimension so they also possess Warp empowered gear/relics.

they're kinda like a blend between Jedi/Sith, Space Marines, and Halo from Halo

when you whittle down to what a publisher actually does it's: bundle all their games to put on sale for peanuts, collect earnings.

it's some kinda karmic irony that the most antisemitic people in this thread want a publisher and to be on steam, the embodiement of a happy merchant rubbing it's claws together.

>There is a memory leak.
I have found the source of the memory leak and it fucking sucks. It is a web build only memory leak and it is caused by how I am creating the spell sound effects. I have a singleton method that creates a sound effect on a location with some pitch variance to spice things up. The problem is that on the web builds the sound effects were getting quieter and quieter as the game was going on. I was able to fix this by duplicating the sound effect before creating it. But unfortunately this looks to be where the memory leak is.
So I have a choice between a memory leak or sound effects getting quieter and quieter each time they are played.

I don't understand why it's hard for them to add NPCs. They made complex pathing and targeting code for zombies, but can't work that into a human trying to survive? They just needed to start with the basics and slowly add more futures to the NPCs.

>my artist needs another break
>but i'm totally about that healthy chungus life
>xer can take a year long break
>please be patient with me
lol he probably pays the artist a salary while on a year long mental health leave

i know a very, very based dev (won't disclose whomst) that unironically mocks the woke and dei shit and has it associated with his gamedev persona. i will tell you this, he is GMI. ironic he has more balls to call out woke stuff in video games then most successful devs here. we've had what Peripeteia dev call out yuri shit. who else has called out woke, dei, and or degenerate stuff in games?

Feedback for Perish Parade.
>minor nitpicks regarding the character menu selection in pic related. I heavily dislike t any sort of menu that doesn't have all options immediately visible/or if there's alot of options, then isn't paged
>movement traversal seemed irrelevant? Pretty much could just walk up to an encounter without issue barring one encounter, so I didn't interact with it other than viewing out of interest. I'm not really sure how you'd make this system more prevalent without just being annoying/forcing you to spam dice just to not get ambushed; even as an avenue for 'resource management'

Not a lot here, it's barebones to the point any issues I point out are likely known. It was entertaining despite there not being much to do. Sat there for maybe 10 minutes playing. NTA, and I haven't played it so idk the situation exactly, but this is the exact kind of thinking that a kenyan helicopter dev utilizes. Just like how a kenyan thinks that attaching any random propeller and airfoil to an any random engine will make a functional aircraft, you think game designers should just slap any random NPCs into any random video game because "video games are supposed to have NPCs". It's not a question of whether or not they *can* implement something; it's whether or not they should. Every mechanic in a game should serve some purpose. Instead, ask yourself this: What holes are there in Zomboid's gameplay, and how will NPCs fill those holes?

Consider looking at incrementals similar to yours and see what gives their gameplay that "I want to buy this" energy. Yours is addictive and has balance done well, just find the missing piece of the puzzle to clear this hurdle and improve the art should you achieve that.

Does gameplay matters more than the theme/story of a game?

Because most videogames are just clones of other games in the same genre, and there's really very few games that can be really called original.

Most videogames gameplay boils down to just combat simulators and kill enemies simulators using 30 year old mechanics.

So I don't think gameplay is what matters in videogames.

lets talk about loss aversion. I recently added the ability to call for airdrop supplies, but enemies could also get them if you were too slow. turns out this sucks so much, the pain of losing the supplies was worse than the joy of gaining them
>>

are you going to submit your game to this demo day kannaCHAD?
>>
>>565644649
yeah.

but my point is that by example, most games now fall into genre templates.

>Wanna make an FSP
You add a FPS camera, a raycast, you add a shotgun, a knife, a pistol, a rocket launcher, a machine gun, a laser, a grenade, a wall jump, a dash, a shield, a flashlight.

That basically is the recipe for a FPS.

and most fps wont deviate too much from that formula because is what the fanbase of the genre expects.

I think it's a bit too incremental with nothing to do. The first dozen runs are gonna filter most incremental enjoyers because the pacing is slow and there's nothing to do during a run. Maybe it would be different if the game was entertaining to watch but it isn't. Much better autobattlers have done quite badly on the market. It feels like Branno is copying that other game, trying to change it to make it different and failing at it. Hard to say if it gets better as you get further in. I quit at the second map when I realized I'd be looking at that same run for the next however many runs it would take to beat that map.

I have made an observation with these incremental games that combine it with autobattling. You basically cannot avoid the player getting bored. Making it an autobattler removes the engagement from the game effectively turning it into an idle game. Branno even recognized this by adding the autocast option but it is also not embracing the idle game aspect as you need to be doing that incremental progression between every run. It's like the worst of both worlds. Trying to be incremental and idle and failing at both.

That's not to say you can't make money with a game like that it's just that it's not doing it well enough to do that imo. Loot Loop was more satisfying and something like Legends of Dragalia has more interesting progression systems and also has the option to loop the dungeons for a bunch of runs. Heralds of Heroism right now is worse than Slay All Bosses which did quite poorly.

Game is honestly kinda shit. It is set up like a survival building crafty game but the skills you have to progress through the building crafty part are lost when you die and the game is extremely deadly with jank enough combat that you can't consistently avoid getting infected without sneaking around everywhere. The game can't decide if it wants to be an extremely deadly zombie survival game or a longer term crafty buildy survival game. The ruleset is very customizable but at the same time doesn't have enough options. I'm sure there's mods that fix it but that's a hack solution for a dev.

The sheer amount of content in that game is what makes it hard to make a competitor.

148 days left, I owe 15 hours to my game.
This morning things were looking grim but then I simply disallowed any such thoughts and now things are looking like my to-do list. I'm not allowed to think outside the list.
I'm on the fifth day of working on the tutorial which was supposed to take 4 days but I did spend hours fixing unrelated physics bugs, so I'm not too far behind schedule. The tutorial is now good enough to teach anyone how to use the controls. It's janky and doesn't handle unexpected cases well but I'll do what I can today and then leave polish for just before release.

Yeah it's just a skeleton of a bigger system I'm still working on, didn't put much time in the QoL for that one except preconfiguring the party and stratagem
>Traversal
The map will be populated with events, when you have an enemy actively pursuing you some of these events' trigger conditions will change, and some (like traps) will actively hinder you as a result. Outside of that, you'll be rewarded when you fill out and explore the map
>Fights
You might be just goated at the game or you didn't get the golem seed. It seems like everybody else died to the golems. Not that there's much to the combat yet because I haven't fully implemented the passive and relics
>Momentum
Momentum works. Fighter gains momentum for every hit landed, and extra momentum is awarded when she crits. You can test this by doing shield bash into burning hammer which buffs the damage more than usual, or brave assault into brave assault which gives you a bigger hit/crit rate on the second cast. Displaying the passive effects (when there's more) is my next homework

Thank you for playing!

Dude did you forget 2014 and the time everyone knew about Tumblr being a shithole?
Japanese fans are the ones that embrace shit like doujin culture sincerily.
Western fanbases is where you get both the irony/self deprecating aspects and people being anal about politics and harrassing a girl for drawing a Steven Universe character wrong.
You didn't even need to watch Metokur's Tumblrisms series to know this.
And ever since the Tumblr exodus of 2018, you see Zoomers carry these aspects.
Mexicans who used to just go "wow Goku is cool" are now arguing over One Piece character skin tones because they saw it done by people that used to be contained on Tumblr.
If Japanese fans are hopeless it might be because they got that Tumblr influence as well.
>>
>>565666772

Unity DOTS might be able to. At least a few hundred should be doable. Synty assets look fucking hideous so you should edit them if you're gonna use them.

The current meta is absolutely to do a demo usually a month or two before you participate in the nextfest and use that time to improve the demo for the nextfest.

Since this thread has a lot of Steam defenders (for some reason), I want to ask those defenders something - why doesn't Valve do anything about key reseller sites, like picrel? We already know that a lot of their keys are sourced unethically. But okay, sure, Valve doesn't care about the devs and how this harms them, but key reselling also cuts into their OWN profits as well. They lose out on the 30% from a sale this way. And it's not like ALL of these sites are hosted from some russian shithole, a lot of them operate in the West and G2A, for example, is in Hong Kong. They get very angry with indie devs who try to sell Steam keys outside of Steam, but an entire organized storefront of keys, that is KNOWN to use stolen keys for games is fine? How does that make sense?
>>
>>565669370
Because Gaben straight up doesn't care.

They're not beholden to investors and so have no reason to fight for maximizing profits by plugging small leaks lest their stocks drop or some such. They have more than enough money and growth as is.
>>
>>565669370
my problems are all related to my game taking too long to make and unable to compete with so many great games already out there. I can't get upset about something so beyond my current problems. I'm just glad there's a low friction way to sell my games and that I don't have to make a website and deal with processing payments
>>
>>565669617
>They're not beholden to investors and so have no reason to fight for maximizing profits by plugging small leaks lest their stocks drop or some such.
Is this why they threaten any indie dev with litigation when they try to sell steam keys outside on their own storefronts or anywhere else?

Besides, key reseller sites such as G2A frequently sell keys at way lower prices than what proper licenses on Steam go for. It's their primary way of winning over game buyers. How come Valve has no problem with that?

>They get very angry with indie devs who try to sell Steam keys outside of Steam
No they don't. You are free to do it. They just say that if you are pulling off shit where the overwhelming majority of your sales come from selling keys for $5 in private while it's $20 officially on steam, they might deem that your game is not worth hosting on Steam because you don't bring them any revenue but are taking advantage of their hosting of forums, mod workshop, cloud saves, etc.
Most of the games whose keys are being sold on those sites still bring in normal revenue through steam. I reckon if you sell 1 key for each normal steam sale, no one will bat an eye.
>>
>>565670259
what thing? organic island.. this is conjuring up some crazy imagery in my head.
>>
>>565670103
Because stopping devs from selling key is a preventative stipulation that was already part of the agreement and can be taken away with a button press. You agree to not sell keys for less.

Chasing resellers is reactionary and requires stamping and stamping and stamping and more resellers will pop up anyway so there's no point. It's like trying to stop piracy. Valve just doesn't bother.
>>
nodevs upset about Steam's business practices is like the homeless upset about property taxes

>>565669370
keys (whether sold or given) are a benefit for the monopoly, that's Steam's primary asset: the belief that they have a large active userbase.... that's why they don't care about middleman resellers of keys.

the customer for that monopoly asset they have is the devs. so obviously if they find their customers trying to circumvent their monopoly it is practically their duty to flex their power to shut that down.

there's your answer.
>>
>>565670512
So Valve willingly lets large scam networks to parasite off their store sales because... There's no point? That doesn't make any sense at all, especially for a company that goes after way smaller devs for doing that. That still doesn't make much sense. You can also circumvent this monopoly by having your game up both on Itch and Steam for example, and ask all your fans to buy the game off on Itch to "support you" or some shit. As far as I know, Valve has not gone after this particular practice.
>>

>So Valve willingly lets large scam networks to parasite off their store sales because... There's no point?

What a strange thing to say.

Tell me, do you think that if Valve let devs sell keys for less at will that it wouldn't grow to be a problem greater than resellers?

I mean, I wouldn't know, I've never bothered trying to set up online payments. But people have been doing it for a long time so I doubt it'd be hard to do, especially with the benefit of making 30%~ more profit by directing more people to make more off-steam purchases.

Hell, I'd wager that a new 3rd (4th?) party would slide in to make off-steam purchases easier to siphon more money from Valve. Likely multiple of such fronts.

No no, it's hell. First you need to get (and safeguard) contact info of all customers, you need to send them invoices, you need to pay a cut to your payment processor, you need technical support for payments, you need to handle refunds, or disallow them in which case the customer can simply dispute the payment and too many of those will have your payment processor cut you off.
There's a reason why almost every PC game is sold on Steam even if the developer/publisher have their own platform.
>>
>>565671395
>Tell me, do you think that if Valve let devs sell keys for less at will that it wouldn't grow to be a problem greater than resellers?
There's no real difference between an indivudual dev selling keys outside of Steam and a reseller doing it for them. They're both equally damaging to Valve's own ecosystem. What doesn't make sense to me is that you're trying to argue that preventing a single dev who only makes up a small minority of sales is somehow more important than key resellers who make up a very significant part of ALL total game sales on Steam. Many turd worlders use key resellers exclusively, for example.
If Valve has gone after both then it would make sense, but this selective targeting of small devs is just weird.
>Hell, I'd wager that a new 3rd (4th?) party would slide in to make off-steam purchases easier to siphon more money from Valve. Likely multiple of such fronts.

That I can understand. But to go out of your way to lick Gaben's ass and attack anyone who ever criticizes steam, and not even try to refute their arguments but simply use attack of a character? Okay, so you're telling me that being banned from "one of many non-mandatory options" is comparable to being diagnosed with cancer. Maybe not as bad as, but comparable to it.

Personally, I wouldn't be too fussed because I'm making a game that doesn't need steam, but it would certainly be a pain not to have the option. Many anons here would be completely unable to make it in gamedev if they couldn't use steam. They'd have to move to a completely different part of gamedev (like mobile games).
I think that says all we need to know about this "non-mandatory" option.

They do, they delete/revoke games bought with stolen credit card information when it gets kicked up the chain high enough. This is why grey market sellers go to great lengths ensuring their fraud is very hard to prove

That's a pretty dramatic claim — here's the realistic picture:
Why people say this about imageboards/file-sharing sites:
Sites that accept user-uploaded images, videos, and files have historically been vectors for malware embedded in files. The concern is legitimate in general, but the specifics matter.
What actually protects your site:
You're using FFmpeg to process videos/audio — this re-encodes files, which strips most embedded payloads
You have file type validation in your upload middleware
Images served from your domain can't execute code just by being viewed in a browser
You're not serving executable files (.exe, .zip with payloads, etc.)
What "zero-click" actually means:
A true zero-click exploit requires a vulnerability in the browser or OS itself — that's not something you introduce, that's on Apple/Google/Mozilla. Your site can't cause that unless you're serving malicious JS, which you're not.
What you can tell concerned users:
Files are processed server-side before being stored
No executables are allowed
The site runs no third-party ad scripts (which are the actual common malware vector)
HTTPS is enforced

What is illegal about reselling keys? They're just store fronts who use the same online payment processors as anyone else, sort of like Amazon or Wish/Temu. If someone gets their credit card stolen and they go through the channels of their bank and payment processor to cancel transactions and ban the scammer then the system is working. It's no different than if Valve approached Stripe or whoever to handle it except they lack all transactional data. If Valve started doing it proactively at the slightest suspicion you'd be able to kill studios by spamming chargebacks this way, but you're saying that they should just ban select store fronts from listing third party key sellers on their site? How would Valve even know which site the key came from? They can't just shut down entire third party stores and websites however they want

I thought it would not get more than 50 reviews and I have been trying to understand why it did so well. It is really not a good fps. Maybe it was the right combination of marketing with the anime girl mc and the nun thing which was new and different. Thematically a nun taking up arms to hunt demons works well. A better made game with that theme could have done over 2000 reviews.

it is illegal to sell licence's to IP you do not own and have not been given permission to sell on the IP owners behalf in most of the world under international intellectual property compacts.

but i didnt even mention it being illegal, i mentioned that Valve could easily shut down their business (mostly) by simply telling their payment processor buddies to stop providing them service. if they really wanted them shut down but they don't because steam is just a collection of scammers working together to run multiple scams.
>>
>>565683746
>Maybe it was the right combination of marketing with the anime girl mc and the nun thing
it's literally this. nundev has repeatedly stated in these threads that the reason it did so well is because his game went viral on tiktok and instagram. his tranime girl was appealing and sexualized enough to get all the normalcattle apes to salivate over her which is what helped it snowball into success on steam.

Don't mess with the base engine, just use modern idiomatic C++ wrappers around existing or in-progress game architecture.
Also keep within the scope of your compiler/platforms, if the compiler cannot make sense of C++23 features, then don't write with C++23 features in mind.
Keep the standard high enough for quality of life, but low enough for portability.
Coordinate with your team about these issues as well so no one's too in the dark.

both, this is where people go after death but people also figured out how to step into the realm of death, you can choose your own fate at the beginning of the game, you either die and end up in void and you work your way out or you're a soldier who ventures into the void and fight the big bad in there

We've simply dispelled the illusion that posting game = progress. The only thing "progress" posters ever accomplished is entertaining nodevs by allowing them to experience game development vicariously through others. Of those anons who posted their game, how few of them ended up releasing and actually achieving their commercial goals? Conversely, how many more anons found success by not posting their games here and instead just quietly finishing and releasing their game from behind closed doors?

Except for potentially making nodevs passive through such means, is that really such a bad thing? My long abandoned goal was inspiring others through my own work.
Low finish rate is the sad reality of gamedev regardless of posting unless there's some mechanism that ruins your chances.

The event that changed /agdg/ the most was the Great Floppening of Marmoreal. Marmoreal was the wake up call for any 130+IQ yesdev a dream game with 3D anime girls complete with action combat, tons of levels, and animated cutscenes can and will shitted and flopped bigly. It has forced yesdev who fully intend to make it into an extended period of soul searching and project hopping.

Nah. He made way less. Less than $5k IIRC. His review count is extremely skewed because retards here (myself included) bought the game just to leave a positive review. Too bad the Steam algorithm does not actually care about review count. Also, it took over a decade to make.
