hello
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
>>566242093hello
once my game receives a playable state (still far away at this point) would uploading it to an expo help or will people just steal my tilesets and stuff?
You told me that my trailer is boring, shit, too long (5 minutes). So I made a shorter, action packed, 2 minute trailer.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QW4QzwUWn_0Is it good now? Will I become rich now?
ui design makes me lose the will to live
>>566242269Im just going to speak from my lizard brain.Theres no drama. Why am I driving?Would be better if I was running away from somthing. No explosions?Drive on the other side of the road into traffic, see how many people you can dodge.Do no hesi streaks.Make this a 30 second tiktok short with some hardstyle while you weave in traffic.
>>566242269Where is the game? You just showed mechanics (and basic racing).Go olay GTA right now and try to figure out why it is fun. Sure, driving mechanics is a big part of it, but players need something to actually do with those mechanics.
>>566242759This, unironcially made a game that would get mogged by anything made in the 90s
I hate this cycle>Make progress on something>Feel like a fucking million dollars>Next morning, fall into deep depressive state that's only fixed when I make more progressI'm literally stuck in an obsessive loop

Lock on camera drift works for the most part, how're you?
>>566244436i made this game
>>566244436I like seeing your progress anon. Its really starting to shape up.
>>566244591Thank you!

>>566243620when your game is actually fun it doesn't matter
>>566244698Don't speak for me, I'm ashamed
>>566244804Gabe sees AI as the next jump in tech; anyone who isn't selfish is thrilled with how AI is going.
i am only interested in 1 type of game. multiplayer complex systems game. best example is Space Station 13. it has to either be 2d topdown or 3d first person only. preferably 3d first person only but those are very rare.
>>566245175and somehow, despite 120,000+ games on steam, only like 20 of these have ever been made.
>>566244804>checks Bank of Steam for it's take on thisall according to keikaku momentthere's no actual business reason to get into hardware for them, the BoS reason though is to trick more people into leaving money in their Steam wallets.... which is what anyone wanting to purchase any hardware is required to do to be in their new queue system which was enacted because of "supply issues".
Yesterday I ate donuts to celebrate finishing the tutorial after 8 days (100% time overrun), and then I spent the rest of the day working on a couple of edge cases. Serves me right for celebrating too soon. I'm now leaning toward not having the tutorial at all, and instead having a simple explanation of controls and letting the player figure it out. It was good enough for my previous games. The next few days I'll be working on some belated bugfix updates for said games.143 days left until I need to have a job. I owe 15 hours to my game.
>>566242520Good insight.>Drive on the other side of the road into traffic, see how many people you can dodge.ok>Do no hesi streaks. What?>Make this a 30 second tiktok short with some hardstyle while you weave in traffic.I already made some shortshttps://www.youtube.com/@Krzysztof-c3b8s/shortsBut your idea to drive on the wrong side of highway is good.I could also drive with truck and destroy cars.I could add police and make police chases.>>566242759No game yet.GTA? I planned this as GTA at first but I want to downscale into racing+highway game, then I want a sequel like a GTA with cities and missions.
Do you participate in thev3expo.com ?Am I supposed to send only a trailer OR 10 sec clip or BOTH? I have sent both. Is this illegal? Do I need a lawyer now?
how much does it cost to commission art assets? suppose its a low fidelity 3D game, with maps, props, weapons, characters. is it worth trudging through months of blender to do this myself for a meh result, or should i just fork up a few thousand and focus on the programming/design side of things? this shit took me like 2 hours. id love to get something similar to peripeteia but i feel like a moron at every stage after the geometry modelling
>>566245910imagine if every movie where ak47 is on screen they made one from scratch instead of just buying a prop
>>566194871Turns out most anons can't tell what's going to do well. I don't like giving feedback on demo day because they don't want to hear the truth. If you are hellbent on finishing and shipping a game that was doomed from the start and nobody could stop you then that's on you. It's good to be able to dedicate yourself to a project and take it across the finish line but I really wish you guys spent more time prototyping and figuring out what sort of games make sense to make for you.
>>566245910You might consider buying/pirating synty models and texturing them yourself.
>>566245609nta but I wouldn't wait to work up to a more interesting game. if you have ideas to make the game more fun and compelling and "viral" you should add them yesterday
>>566246041obviously modelling is faster and you can re-use the same asset. also the art style needs to be consistent between assets, risky if you need to change artists for whatever reason.
>>566246324The reason is that "GTA" game, even 2D, takes a lot of time and effort to finish. Even GTA 1 was made by a big team. This is why I want smaller game but with some "GTA" features, this is why I keep the highway mode in game. Maybe I will add cops and some shit to do on the highway, but I don't want cities and missions in this game...I need to earn some cash on first game so the second game ("GTA" game) can be made with more than one person, I need to outsource some shit, graphic artists etc.
>>566245910With each one you make it will get easier. 2 hours doesn't even sound that bad though it is clearly unfinished. Could work for a top down game but not an fps. Making 3d games is a lot of work. It comes down to the question of do you wanna do that work yourself or pay someone else to do it for you. It is not cheap.
>>566246396the ak47 is so common that you can get it in any level of detail. don't hold yourself to standards that big studios don't hold themselves to. you'll have all the time to commission all models to be perfectly consistent when you pass 50k wishlists.
Figuring out how to make my game look graphically acceptable is actually harder than coding it. It's all placeholder assets right now.
>>566245883v3expo has about 4k views each edition. Is that much?
>>566242254>>566242254>>566242254
>>566247874For example this is what my game looks like right now. Completely indecipherable placeholder assets that nobody can even tell what's going on, despite the code already having quite advanced systems. First, it's fully multiplayer, and those objects with wireframes around them are pilotable motherships that can carry many players inside them while moving, and those other objects are space stations and a "biodome" terrain, each having NPCs with varying behaviors like hostile, fleeing, wander, etc. Typical first person combat. Ability creator. Item creator.
>>566247874it is always the hard part unless you're an experienced artist with multiple games behind you
>>566246167It's not most anons, it's most people. And people in general. As another anon said, if you were good enough to get a 60% good stocks, u'll be a millionaire in no time.I give out my pure unfiltered (maybe shitty) opinion on dd because it's also a good training for myself. You can see a shitty game, and think it's shitty for a number of reasons... But sitting down and write up a concise statement of the hows and whys of your opinion does take time and effortAlso there is big difference when you are judging a game the dev is making to fuck around and build up skills, and a game he wanna sell and escape the wagecage

>>566249507>I'm gonna use your gameplay clip not the trailer alright? No! I want the trailer. I made 2 minute trailer specially for the expo! I had 5 minute trailer and worked hard on 2 minute trailer.I though you are supposed to submit trailer and the clip.
>>566249957NTA but if it's that "short" trailer you have on your YouTube that's a hard watch right now because it's just two minutes of some car crashing into things from like 50 feet in the air. The game is a little under baked at the moment and you'd want to make a good first impression.
>>566249353My nigga its a youtube short use whatever music you like no one will care. As long as its not a trailer.Remove the Destructor2D its goofy. >>566250248Yes but the v3expo is only once per year. I would prefer to have people watch this trailer even if it has flaws. One year later it will be too late, the game might already ship to Early Access.

What I don't understand is why /agdg/ believes raising the Steam fee is gonna fix Steam. It wont, because the promotion algorithm is shit and only promotes the same highest earning 50 games on rotation. The user navigation on the store is also shit, and trying to find games in a genre you like is impossible because the UX is so shit and janky. Plus, the sloppening has already happened, so the store is already ruined in that regard. It's almost as if anons here do not want to see the underlying issue and are only trying to treat the symptoms.
>>566257665By the time the show airs I probably will have bought about that many. Better make it two dozen then
>>566256263>>566256516why haven't you made a game with AI then?
>>566257836see people think Apple's walled garden is more insidious but i think objectively Steam's metrics blackhole is far far worse. you can send metrics in but they will take any measure possible to prevent metrics leaking out.... literally every other storepage will just embed a video and let you keep your views.
>>566254647Dud games need to be played. From that webm I don't even understand if your xcom squad is moving on their own or you are inputting commands. My evergreen tip is to think what's fun about your game, and what makes it different.

>>566258404i've seen them spit out the near exact same remedy hundreds of times over the last decade. you'd think at some point they'd get wise to the fact that there's been no attempt to fix the problem because it's not considered a problem by the policy makers.

>>566258510>>566258816>>566259000and to state this even more plainly (for precisely >>566259119 who clearly wants to understand it and make it broadly known)by taking over video deployment for their store, they prevent devs paying $100 to get whatever minimal amount of steam users browse new products from benefiting the views (and thus metrics and thus algorithm support for futher views) to direct;y prevent contributing to any virtuous cycle for their products so that they do not personally contribute to their store's products having middleing outcomes, anything that isn't a massive success is more profitable to them as a complete flop. server costs of running their own youtube is paid for by each game that doesn't reach it's monthly threshold or direct rrecoup threshold.
>>566260078>more organic discoveryhow exactly do you imagine that, when the algorithm already prefers already established titles? the discovery queue won't show you a game that is older than 5 months unless it made like a trillion dollars. and browsing the store outside of the DQ is even worse because most of the "top spots" are also only for the top earning games, not new releases.the newest releases tab is purposefully hidden away and an ass to get to. valve won't change that shit even if they raise the entrance fee
>>566259396>why do you even care about your game getting attention?it's the same reason Valve pays you 2cents per post, attention underpins the entire market.no one can give money to something they don't know exists.

>>566264695I want gaben to send me chocolates at christmas. There is a tipping-point where Steam considers your game worth promoting, falling short of that critical point but still claiming that you 'succeeded' is cope. Maybe the amount of money you get from a 300 review game is life changing in the third world, but you can live in Iraq and still afford to have a house and a family while being a taxi driver. Here in the west you have to be in the top 10% of earners to afford to buy a basic family home, we have real first world problems that can only be solved with big money and that means being successful enough on Steam where Steam itself decides your game is worth showing to people on the platform. 300 reviews is just some nice bonus spending money, it's not even enough to live on for long enough to make another game.

>>566265650>300 reviews is just some nice bonus spending money, it's not even enough to live on for long enough to make another game. The solution is to steal gubmint money, investing in crypto and stock markets, make money in scammy ways while spending little. Then you can make a game as a hobby or do whatever else you want.

>>566265993>Im pretty sure my game will be a success if we get to release it as I envisioned.See that's the problem. You might realize that the way you envisioned the game requires you to spend 10 years of manwork on it, which you can't afford, so you have to compromise on some points. Sometimes more than you can bear. And the end result is a bad game. And you know it's a bad game, no amount of feedback can help you because you know exactly all its flaws and how you pretty much had to cut off away limbs and important parts of its body just to fit it through the release door.
>>566266529You’re kinda proving his point desu. A lot of gamedevs tunnel vision so hard on “make game -> get rich” that they never look at literally any other skill with better risk/reward. If your goal is stable money, there’s boring shit like software dev, enterprise IT, cybersecurity, trades, CAD, finance, sales, whatever. None of those have the “0 income for 4 years then pray Steam algorithm notices you” problem. Indie games are basically like trying to become a musician or streamer now: survivorship bias everywhere. Doesn’t mean don’t make games, just don’t pretend it’s the rational wealth-maxxing path unless you’re already cracked at marketing or got lucky timing.

The only job here that actually really could be a path to making stable good income for anyone is trades/blue collar work but you will basically work yourself to death and not feel like being alive.
>>566266308>Isn't indie dev one of the least profitable pursuits? It doesn't really matter at this point, I'm a minimalist lifer and during covid my rent went up 30% and my food expenses doubled while my salary increased a total of 10%. >>566266872People online massively overdoomer the job market. Yeah it sucks compared to 2019 and entry level white collar is oversaturated as hell, but acting like every programmer/accountant/IT guy only got there through nepotism is cope too. The difference is those fields at least have an actual salary floor and predictable progression instead of the Steam casino where you can spend 5 years making $800 total. Trades absolutely wreck your body if you’re doing hardcore physical labor forever, but so does sitting in a chair stressmaxxing over wishlists and algorithm updates until 3 AM. Most people who actually get financially stable do it through boring incremental gains, not hitting jackpot careers.

>>5662671539 years experience and still getting filtered is exactly why people are blackpilled on tech right now, so I get it. But I still think “only nepotism works now” is overstating it. What happened is the industry went from infinite zero-interest-rate hiring to companies realizing they overhired, so now everybody from juniors to seniors is dogpiling the same openings. Retail ghosting tech workers is also a meme at this point because managers assume you’ll instantly leave. The market’s bad, but bad markets aren’t permanent. >>566267737Even if you believe immigration hurts wages, that still doesn’t magically make indie gamedev a rational backup plan. You’re talking like the choices are “become millionaire indie dev” or “eternal wagie damnation,” when most people who end up okay financially just live normal lives with stable income, realistic expectations, and long-term planning. The whole “get rich and escape neo-serfdom” mindset is what pushes people into ultra-volatile paths in the first place. Making games is fine if you actually enjoy it, but treating Steam like a lottery ticket that’s supposed to save you from modern life is how people end up burning years chasing a jackpot instead of building something sustainable.

Void War is one example. There was a game that released really early on in AI that got 'decent' sales, perhaps because it was unique being one of the first games. Can't remember the name though, it was extremely forgettable. You'll also see some AAA games get mentioned because they've no doubt got AI going on somewhere, since corpos are all trying to push AI into everything regardless of if it helps or not. Usually this AI isn't visible though, unless they fuck up and accidentally leave in placeholders. Civ 7 has AI on loading screens, I believe? It got a lot of backlash, and I wouldn't say the success of a game like that depends on whether or not they use AI.There isn't a single /agdg/ game that we know uses AI and is successful, however.

Which types of fantasy races are worth adding as playable? I've been thinking about it recently and trying to come up with which fantasies or aesthetics are preffered by players. Humans or a human equivalent is a given as they're the most popular race, and having some beautiful idealized sexy human variants like elves or humans with animal ears is probably also worth it since they can reuse the same mesh with minor tweaks and are popular. Some big buff race like orcs might be worth it due to the power fantasy they provide but making them actually stand out takes a little effort in making a unique model. A short race like gnomes or goblins might also be worth it. Anything that's even less human shaped and would require completely different animations and rigs feel like they would never be worth the effort because they just won't be popular enough. It would be good if there was some scientific research listing the most popular races or fantasies in a variety of different RPGs and comparing them.
>>566279447When considering which fantasy races to include as playable options in your game, it’s important to balance player preferences, design feasibility, and the uniqueness of each race. While specific scientific research might not be easily accessible, many surveys and studies within gaming communities (like those conducted by game developers or publishers) often report on player preferences. Popular gaming platforms like Reddit, forums, or gaming magazines can provide anecdotal evidence and trends.Ultimately, your selections should contribute to diverse gameplay experiences while catering to popular aesthetics. Continuously engaging with your audience and collecting feedback can also help you assess which fantasy races resonate most with your player base. Adding layers of depth, both in lore and gameplay mechanics, will help make even less common races appealing.
>shota game allowed on steamWhat's the deal with getting porn games onto steam, just hope the steamie reviewing your game isn't the malding troon who rejects anything with flat-chested women?
>>566279692Steam has specific guidelines and policies regarding the distribution of adult content, including games with sexual themes or nudity. While some adult games are allowed on the platform, they must comply with Steam's rules, which include avoiding explicit sexual content or depictions of nudity that are deemed pornographic. The review process for games can sometimes seem subjective, as it relies on the judgment of the reviewers. Developers often express concerns about inconsistencies in how games are approved or rejected based on content, including themes related to the portrayal of characters. It’s important for developers to thoroughly review the guidelines and present their games in a way that aligns with Steam’s policies to increase the chances of approval. If you're a developer of adult-themed content and want to distribute your game on Steam, it's essential to understand these guidelines clearly and possibly seek feedback from the community to gauge how your game might be received.

>>566245910Peripeteia did eventually get two dedicated art guys who made various environmental and weapon models, but initially all of the models, levels, and textures were made by one dev. His work started off rough and improved as he went along, with worse earlier models being replaced over time with better ones. The important thing wasn't getting the art perfect initially, but having something there to work with in the meantime and improve upon later. There is another important part: for every current ingame map besides Memorial Tower, he used a BSP level editor (in his case, Hammer++) instead of taking the usual slopdev path of Blender or ProBuilder. BSP level editors have a way better workflow for mid to low-fidelity game maps, and the results feel more authentic because the level geometry is literally shaped by the dev tools. You should consider learning one alongside Blender. Even if it's an extra tool to learn, the producitivity boost is absolutely worth it.It might help if you look at the original /v/3 trailer and maybe some old demos (there's archived versions on the Internet Archive, GameJolt, and IndieGala) to get some idea of what the devs initially worked with. The game's development process obviously had a lot of problems, but how the devs made assets was not one of them.

Hello /agdg/, can you recommend any videos on 3D level design? Most of the videos I watch about gamedev turn out to be made by nodev charlatans. They sometimes can be helpful regardless, but when it comes to an abstract topic like this I'm skeptical of how useful the advice will be.

>>566282637My honest advice is to look up stuff from outside videogames for inspiration.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtGQeLsVvI0A good resource for 3D levels is obstacle racing.3D games are basically obstacle races.Watch shit like ninja warrior to learn how to design them.A good advice is to learn about pacing in storytelling and music.

It also doesn't help that Wasteland Bites and Guns n Nuns are both flavor-of-the-week and have no unique value or staying power so they can't bank on having lucrative tails like some other (more real) games. Sadly for them they have already overmarketed and reached most of their total addressable market so there's not even opportunity for much expansion99% of our local devs don't actually gain any advantage out of experience. Most of them just do blind shooting and two or three of them get lucky every year. They can't replicated it because it was never skill in the first place.

>>566269104>>566269941Honestly Void War's usage of AI is such a nothing burger. They got some portraits and made them look like pixel art and it's such a small part of the game. I bet there's a bunch of games pulling similar things when it comes to static images like that. I can't name any game that made major use of AI generated assets be it 2d or 3d. AI for 2d animation still seems quite shit and the 3d models still got some ways to go. Maybe there's some poorly selling games out there already. I'd be interested to see them. I've been meaning to try the 3d generation stuff as I've seen there's been some advancements in topology and even UVing. It's just that I'm currently making a 2d game so figuring out that 3d gen stuff has felt like an unnecessary distraction.

if ai replaces all jobs, doesn't that mean it doesn't matter what you do now? it means you can do whatever you want, because it will all be replaced anyways. and if not this or next year, then in 5-10 years. and doing something new than ai doesnt replace, just to have a job for a few years, isn't even worth it.so thinking long-term basically means doing what you want, right now. cause this will be the future.and if there's no neetbux, then it means "everything is equally hard to make money with" anyways. therefore do what you want, because it will be hard to make money with everything in the future. at least you'll have the advantage that you like what you are doing.

my brain can't come up with normal games. it always has to be some sandbox world where you can destroy and build everything and loot everything and craft stuff and alter the world and you have many systems working together like weather, light, temperature, npc needs, plant growth, day-night-cycle etc. etc.this is probably why i have such a hard time with game dev. i can't comprehend how to make a fun game with a static map. i'm just not used to that way of thinking, unless it's a competitive online shooter.

lmao i wasn't prepared how complicated it is to play a video on a 3D plane in unreal.i have to make a mediaplayer, then the mediaplayer also maps to a texture target file. then you have to use that texture file in a material. then you have to make a blueprint that takes the mediaplayer and "play source", but somehow when you call "play source" you have to manually select the video file again, which is weird cause the mediaplayer file is for the specific video. and then you put that material on the plane and run the blueprint of course to play the source. and then you also have to separate the audiofile from the video manually and also manually play the audio file at the same time.this is fucking retarded.

i find project zomboid without zombies fascinating. with zombies you settle down really fast and build a base, just anywhere where you can sledgehammer the stairs and be safe.but when you play peaceful, you just drive around endlessly looking for a nice location and you never find "the best place".why do i find that fascinating? cause you can't really loot/build unless you have a place where you store/build everything. so you have to settle down somewhere first, and then you can loot the world bringing it all to one place and build that place up.now imagine that "base" is your game. once you settle down on a game you can spend day after day building that game up, you can bring everything you learn into that game. all assets you find or buy you can bring into that game.but first, you need to settle down, before that you just roam the map with a fully packed van and you have to leave all the nice loot behind, because you have no more space to store it.the thing about settling down is: you have to accept all the shitty cons of the place you settle down on. otherwise you'll constantly think the grass is greener and move again and again and again. which leads to another big problem: a fatigue caused by starting from scratch over and over again. at some point the brain refuses to care, because it knows you'll leave again anyways. it's probably similar to people who quit dating after they were left many times before. they stop investing, because they do not believe that the commitment is real.

the flow zone might be a useless concept, because real life is not a video game and you can't just "adjust the difficulty level". it's a main problem of all science: it always expects lab conditions.therefore i must assume that trying to find the "flow zone" is a fallacy, because it might not even exist in real life. you have to find an approach where you get stuff done without being in flow
>>566310056>real life is not a video game and you can't just "adjust the difficulty level"Yes you can, it's called ambition, if you want to play on easy mode you lower your ambitions. Of course resources scale down when you do but that's typical

Unreal only does render culling PER OBJECT / MESH, and will not cull faces within said mesh, even when pointed directly away from frustum. So I'm cooking up a new workflow to use instances on a provided base mesh to generate the level geometry, using PCG system. So far so good on columns, easy enough. Having a tougher time with getting a good edge detect for walls. May just have to slightly modify the base mesh to have known quantities for some tris extruded from edge. After that, some testing to ensure the new render culling is working correctly, and performance should go through the roof. Ideally this will work on a particularly well endowed non-flying toaster.

i'll never understand why everybody is a programmer nowadays, yet i have never met a single programmer in real life. actually sometimes i believe we live in a simulation, because so many people own cars and houses yet i can't comprehend what job they are working exactly. i just cannot comprehend what all those people are doing for money. a town has over like 70k people, i don't know what jobs they do all day. i understand that there's some jobs we all know, the classics basically, but if i try to make an estimation only like 2-3k people could be in those "normal classic jobs", there aren't 100 barbers in a town. there aren't 100 doctors. there aren't 1000 cashiers.
>>566333836Yes, this is the Sims but bigger.
>>566333836>posts in a gamedev thread>shocked that programming is frequently discussedfell out of the shopping cart one too many times as a kid?
>>566333745and yours?
as i get older i just want to play simpler games
>>566333836They drilled it into kids heads during the obama days that you needed to be a programmer or you'd be left behind. So a lot of those kids learned programming. That's why I did and some of my friends did for the same reason. Then when those kids grew up and got out of college they pulled the rug out and flooded the country with H1bs and now AI >_<
>>566333836>yet i have never met a single programmer in real life. That's because you're a loser and a failure at life who never goes outside to interact with anyone unless your single mother drags you somewhere.
I've been shopping this idea for a setting around and just wanted to get some opinions: Basically its post-apocalyptic cyberpunk world, where these giant corporations take over after a boom in neural net tech in the 90s and keep the world stuck in the sort or aesthetics of that era of cyberpunk fiction using larger models, but then as the companies grew they start getting into violent conflicts, the workers feeling exploited and the system overall started to collapse.this led to what's called "The Crash" which left the corps destroyed and the world in ruins. now one of the safest places is this giant tower arcology that they built and the survivors are fighting over control of that tower. The player is an artificially made human, manufactured by the Corps to be basically a drone. So the main thrust of this game is the player making decisions based on whether they think our ablilty to rationalize or empathize make us human while deciding the fate of the Tower. The game itself will be an ImSim RPG eith the key feature being the NPC and factions system that acts agentically to other factions, NPC, and the world according to their needs and ideologies. I just think maybe there's not enough here. I have pillars written out for this and those are a bit messy too.
>>566334068Kind of same. I still want to make more complex games though, so my gamedev mind seems to be lagging my gamer mind

maybe managing expectations with gamedev is so hard, because other things are easier to get into. i can start learning to play piano and just in 6 months i can already be playing really good-sounding tunes. in gamedev it takes way longer to know everything it takes to even just make a basic game.ofc mastering music also takes a lifetime, but your initial results are way faster.also playing some simple, but nice sounding piano tune to other people is instantly rewarding. showing your shitty platformer to people is something nobody cares about.
>>56633496790% done might as well be 0% done. A game that you cannot release and let other people play might as well not exist at all. That last 10% can easily end up taking 90% of development time.
