The Darwin's Danger Shield is fine, actually. TF2 is a game almost entirely about close and medium range combat, and weapons like the Scorch Shot and Detonator unfairly disrupt this idea. Sniper has a unique and special role as being the only long-range class in the game, and when other mercenaries can break this rule and effortlessly bypass team fights to purposely attack Snipers this it becomes problematic. The Scorch Shot and Detonator are probably balanced at close and medium ranges, but against Snipers it becomes a legitimate issue. The Darwin's Danger Shield is a last resort to enforce the original design of the game.
