Like the courier, the vault dweller, or chosen one in the Fallout games. Context there to connect your character more to the story but you still play as a blank slate. Also the Durge content you get later just add to the game. Your character feels more like part of that thing rather than just being a vehicle through which you experience the story as it happens to your companions. A character that intrinsically has something to do with the ENTIRE plot while still being a blank slate like the courier. Later it just makes it more personal for you character when dealing with the plot.

You either would have to have cheated (using wikis and guides) or already having completed the game to know anything about Durge. It's not really a problem for a new player.
