It's simplistic, but it works well as garnish in service of the actual narrative. Point is, Reed isn't really meant to be taken seriously as a character in his own right, but he's a fun bit of seasoning to be enjoyed alongside the main dish. I can't imagine ascribing to be a genuine Reedfriend unless you happen to be really into either cannabis, raptors, or the colour pink.
