But all shitposting aside, the concept of the companion quest is becoming outdated. One of the few things Mass Effect 3 did a very good job at was heavily involving (some of the) companion characters in the actual plot with very clear narrative relevance and focus. Despite making ME2 basically the companion quest game, Bioware at the time tried to improve on the formula. CRPG's by Larian and Owlcat are not hitting above that mark, they're still doing the companion quest formula where the last act has a bunch of one-and-done side missions relevant to conclude the story of each character, most of which are disconnected or optional for the main storyline>>but what if I don't want the companion!Good writing can get around the absence of a character from the main plot, but when the presence of a character isn't felt outside of side missions, that's archaic. They need to step it up for the sequels.

The "Improved Kobolds" component for SCS is mega ass cancer. It turns a level 1-2 dungeon like the Nashkel Mines into something more fitting for level 3-4 adventurers, so you're forced to meta game and go grind somewhere else instead of treating the task with the immediate urgency it deserves. Have fun spending an hour carefully navigating around the huge kobold waves tucked in various dead ends though this part is kinda fun admittedly, since it incentivizes you to make clever use of stealth and CC only to hit an immediate brick wall with a level 5+ HP bloated kobold shaman who's stronger than almost every enemy mage you encountered at this point of the game! Oh yeah, and he's surrounded by an entire posse of higher tier kobolds that fire poisoned arrows.

The systems aren't too hard and PoE1 is a nice on-ramp because character building is limited, but there is somewhat of learning curve because it's sorta doing its own thing in terms of how the stats and abilities work. Still its awesome how powerful the no friendly-fire zones of the Int based AOE-scaling can make you feel as a wizard. If you like dropping perfectly placed spell circles its great fun. Deadfire gets a bit weirder with how stuff like power level works and blows the build options way open. Definitely reference the gamefaqs guide for explanations of how shit works. I haven't played the turn based mode for PoE1 but apparently it's surprisingly well put together. All the stats do the same thing across every class, for example "Might" makes your damage numbers go up whether you're a Barbarian or a Wizard though there are some class specific effects with a high Might, for a wizard I think it increases your AoE. Of course, flavor wise this leads to muscle wizards who tear the bars off their jail cells with their bare hands in the dialogues but if you're not a stickler about that it's fine.

The empower system is super half-assed and poorly balanced with it being S+ tier op for casters and all but useless for anyone and anything else. It also goes against the philosophy of encounter based resources that they set out to do. The weapon modal system is cool, but it's largely invalidated by non-unique weapons being unupgradeable past surperior. There is a limited amount of e.g. crossbows, arbalasts, and so while you can learn basically every modal, your party comp is still limited by weapon choice. You can stack crossbow modals for perma-interrupts for example. The modals are also poorly balanced but you can learn everything and respec at any time so that is neither here nor there. They just removed upgradable base equipment for no fucking reason. Yeah, uniques are cool, but fucking why?Power levels are a unecessarily complicated mechanic. I know how it works, but it's a strange choice and it also work between classes because some of them clearly benefit from them more than others.
