I only intend to add “More” when the basic part of the game is as airtight as possible, thus allowing me to continue making more stuff for it and refining without having to worry about technical difficulties.

How come when you talk with steamies about Valve's monopoly on here they always frame the issue as if there can only be a monopoly on digital games distribution? Their argument is always "but what if the monopoly was run by a worse guy/companie", not "what if there was no monopoly". To me it's a very weird and sometimes dishonest way of arguing. It's as if they can't even comprehend that there doesn't have to be a monopoly at all.
>>
>>566928473
I’m more interested in each enemy serving a purpose than I am with having a lot of types

>>
>>566928864
The backdrop could be an fmv of dancing anime idols.
>>
>>566928668
There's going to be a monopoly because the end user hates using multiple launchers and logins and stuff. They complain if they have to use a 3rd party account to play some mmo that came to Steam after it was already out for years. Even if you destroyed Steam they would then pick one other platform to all gravitate to.

>>566928975

>>
>>
>>566929010
Once again with the disingenous arguing. Why do you assume that every store would force you to use a launcher like steamshit does? Gog and itch don't do that. They just let you download the games after purchase without any launchers.

Valve started as a relatively small developer and gradually built up Steam to where it is now. EA tried Origin and Ubisoft tried UPlay after seeing how successful Steam was but they couldn't do it despite being some of the biggest powerhouses at the time. Coincidentally gamers started to become critical of DRM right around 2011 and wary of Steam when GOG started selling modern games, this trend followed to around 2016-2017 mostly in response to GFWL ending support in 2013 and shutting down soon after making lots of multiplayer games unplayable online. This was also around the time Denuvo started rearing its head. But Steam got through that too.
So it's not for a lack of trying but other more resourceful companies just can't seem to pull it off. And now we're here, the only worry on the Steam user's mind is Gaben dying because he seems to understand something shareholder golems don't.

The actual risk is tiny, and mostly related to gun ownership. And if you have to spend 1 day a year in the Senate answering questions, that's better than the kowtowing they'd have to do to the CCP in China or to Putin in Russia.
There's a reason why rich people tend to gravitate to some countries and away from others.

>>566935836
How? The US is not Russia or China. It's not being held together by a strongman. Same with corporations. A CEO dies? A new CEO gets appointed, just like the old CEO.
>>
>>566935697
that's a more formal and accurate definition of "rich" where it is a byproduct of power.
the discussion here is of an informal "rich" you could become from making a successful indie game or winning the lottery. obviously without power they return to poverty and get jailed for tax fraud..... but only in America can that informal version of "rich" buy a pardon.
>>
>>566928668
Of course valve competing with 1 or 2 real competitors would be better for costumers, because these people would actually fight for the audience by making their products better.
Problem is, our timeline didn't go this way. Steam had free range on pc store space since half life 2, I have almost all my games on steam. A new competitor must be REALLY FUCKIN GOOD to make me open a new account. We could balance multiple accounts and libraries, we did it on ps3/360 days on console, but in pc there is nothing like that. The only exception might by battlenet for playing stacraft

Shouldn't be too hard, like a year or so
The issues would be the assets and the game design required to stand out in one of the most oversaturated genres, the supply/demand ratio is brutal

my brutal realization about gamedev in the current year
console games in the 1980s cost $30-$40 which corrected for inflation would be $120-180 now

imagine what kind of game you'd have to make now to justify that price
players perceive less and less value in games every year while demanding more and more

Its really crazy how much gamers expect from a $5 game when a big mac is like $7 in the current year.
Really a dev after taxes and the steam cut is getting like $2.70 and a big mac costs $7 but gamers expect 10+ hours of content and continual updates.
Actually laughable how entitled they are. F2p games are the worst thing that ever happened to the industry, another cancer valve normalized.

>>566943154
Around 4-6 hours a day. I'd say my biggest time sinks were 1. Top down pixel art animation, since it's 8-directional and 2. Figuring out things along the way. Like, now that I know how an action roguelite is being made, I could probably redo everything in 6 months and have it better than what I had before, but when you're tackling a new genre you've never coded in, there's a lot of pitfalls and unknown unknowns that waste a lot of time, regarding unit acceleration, smoothness "feel good" stuff basically, how to code projectiles that can be influenced by items in ways that add additional behavior like spawn X on death or deflect on hitting walls or whatnot. Handling poise/stun states, dash states when a projectile hits, enemy AI behavior so that they don't do a konga line after the player but rather simulate realistic swarming behavior and dozens of other stuff I didn't know I had to implement back when I first started working on it.

atheism is cringe but religion is cringe too. people should develop their own personal spiritual beliefs from philosophy and experience instead of just taking one from an old collection of desert fairytales. I seriously cannot believe how anyone is a Christian when you can look at the history of the Bible and clearly see that it copies stories from other works like the epic of Gilgamesh. Input and keybinds should be rock solid as soon as possible for keyboard, mouse and gamepad.
If you already have rendering then you should consider tackling skeletal animation sooner rather than later.
Don't wait too long to add physics and collisions.
If you have all that stuff? Then start thinking about editor and asset packing.

So I tested it out and it seems like Windows and Linux will have a divergence occur at some point if you continue to feed in Unity generated random vectors as forces or if you rotate vectors on the Unity side of things. Using Box2d's own rotation functions doesn't have this issue it seems. Surprisingly enough assigning a reflected velocity vector in Unity and then assigning it to the Box2d body doesn't seem to cause a divergence, but I don't know if that's just because I didn't test long enough or what. Maybe a longer simulation would prove that it doesn't hold up, I'm not an expert in these matters.
Thanks for reading my blog.

Newfren here, debating having a go at writing a game engine as a side project, simply for the challenge/experience, and by extension I suppose that means I should make a game for it as well.
Figured it could be interesting to try and make a game I actually wanted to play (likely an isometric turn-based CRPG of some sort), only thing is I absolutely suck at creative writing, and to a lesser extent art as well (limited experience with 3D modelling tools but never actually made anything of my own).
Music I can do to some extent (though I'm far more experienced with synthpop over vidya soundtracks, so I'd have to try and adjust and familarise myself with it) and as someone who enjoys coding in general I doubt that aspect will be too much of a problem.
Am I being overambitious/unrealistic or is it actually worth a shot? Writing is probably my main bottleneck but I'd like to hope I could figure something out.

It's honestly quite easy to identify games that gamers are begging to play. The problem is that the solodev here have neither the skills nor resources to make any of those games. Instead, we're forced to tow the very narrow edge of games we are capable of making and games that people want to play, often at the expense of neglecting the games that we want to make. The best thing you can do is to develop your skills in order to expand the range of games you're capable of making.

I think thats part of it another thing is that it just does not strike me as weird enough. The sims is a weird place, they speak a weird language and even in game text reflects that.

Somthing about the text on buildings and things being in english is uncanny to me. Also the animations are too boring and safe, they exaggerated the animations in the sims, the same way a voice actor exaggerates their voice for a role.

The base world also seems too clean for my liking. In the older sims there were people living in trailer parks talking about ufos. In paralives it looks like a typical nordic country but with less white people.

No dirt, no danger, as controversial as a pillow.

Its a game that will probably do well with gays and women but then again that was the direction of the sims for a long time.

There's a lot more interesting(and on topic) things about eric than his marital status, like his new statement on AI:

>To Barone, the humanity of artistic expression is core to his work, whether he's talking about Haunted Chocolatier or Stardew Valley. As a former solo developer, he has been able to bring his own touch and hand to every aspect of his work, whether it's learning pixel art or composing music. He mentions this when we speak about the growing role of AI in game development.
>"I think anything's lost when you use AI for any creative thing, any step of the way - unless it's being used for very specific zoomed-in cases, maybe. You're offloading creativity to an algorithm, which I think is always gonna undermine the pure and authentic human element of what you're doing. So for me, as someone who wants to express myself in an artistic way, I wouldn't ever want to use AI for any sort of creative thing, because it's beside the point of what I'm doing. My goal is to express myself in a creative way. Why would I let an AI do that for me? At the very least, let another human being express themselves if you need help.
>That's probably what I would say. There are plenty of humans out there that would like an
opportunity to express themselves. I feel like that should take priority over a soulless machine."

I have multiple weapons attached to a Godot node and I want to have them all fire at the same time.
The way I have it set up right now is like this, and then I have the shoot function call current_weapon.
The problem is that right now it's only firing the last gun in the node list, when I want it to fire all of the guns attached to the node.

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? The project I'm using has a switch weapons function and when I use that it does properly change between each gun in the node list. The function is only setting one of the guns as current_weapon but I'm not sure why.
