In fact, it's never even stated that you can time travel using them, it's only ever said that they vaguely affect time in some way. They also only exist on Little Planet anyway. The signposts, like other game items (rings, item boxes, etc.) are of dubious canonicity, and either way for all Sonic knows that's all something specific to Little Planet. Time Stones being some time travel device / alternative Chaos Emerald is made up Archie fan fiction thing.
Ian's issues were written on the wall if you read his Archie stories. It was a meta and about making corrections and having "Wow! Is that a thing from an obscure Sonic game that you could find on the wik?!" moments, but the comic was so ass for most of its run that nobody cared.

When Iizuka calls the older cartoons off brand he has to be talking about romance. I'm not saying romance in Sonic is bad but that's the only substantial difference between Satam and the later series. You could argue that Satam is more in-character than Sonic Prime and the movies. I think Blade of Courage is really flat so far.
