Surely Garry will let people go standalone with their games rather than protect his engine from falling into obscurity r-right? Surely Garry's, Garry's Mod sequel isn't really a low quality Roblox knockoff for monetization that he probably regretted not adding to Garry's Mod r-right?

And wtf.

It generated something that is professional and much much better than what I can fucking do.

And the best part is that It has everything modular, with a nice architecture and with a plan to generate more prompts to create each module.

I want to make toribash but more autistic, so this is basically an editor to put together the ragdolls with all the joints and muscles. Lets me slap together a creature with all the muscles and tendons needed to actuate it way faster than fucking around with a config file. how to finish a game and make money when you ain't got no time:
a game where you have no moving characters/physical control. if you have characters at all, they are standing on the side of the screen, not physically involved in the scene.

Strangely enough when I play on desktop I don't really get immersed that much in my game
But I've been testing mobile builds recently and it really caught my attention and began to suck me in and I noticed feelings I didn't notice before
Weird
I think it's because my UI is generally more favorable to mobile than it is on desktop
Tapping shit on your phone is more fun than tapping with your mouse

I might have been wrong to shit on mobile players so much
I should really optimize and think about my mobile build in the future rather than just outright dismiss it or view it with disdain as I always have

Weird little bit of a learning experience for me

The idea is that I'm gonna make an AI that learns how to move its body by using all those muscles, and then the users basically compose their fighting game moveset by composing small movements the AI has learned to do, like "punch towards X direction" or "take steps towards there" and such, and then the whole thing being physically driven hopefully leads to emergent gameplay or something.
I mean the real driving force behind this is I wanna fuck around with ragdolls and ML, but don't tell the publishers that.

Dream revenue is pretty spot on.
In movies you spend 1 on making, 1 on marketing and then your net earnings starts from 2 onward.
You don't invest 100k in a project only to get back 110 a few years later, it's expected to make double the investment.
I won't see this last so story, it's always the same and I'm in a great mood, so fuck that noise.
>>
>>567180139
>98% positive
>9+ hours average playtime
it's a shit game, that's why it flopped
just make games with 100% positive reviews and 10+ hours average playtime, bro. how hard is that?
>>
>>567180139
So to earn a little more than minimum wage you need to make one game every year with 100 or more reviews.
Seems pretty easy to me! ;^)
>>
>>567179159
Right now the idea is to unlock classes as you progress in the story. Although im not sure how long the game will be, so it might end up not happening, or only be 1/2 alt versions for each character. The 3 main chars are rather set in what they are. But if possible id like to give them all different ranges in what they can do that you can decide on. With typical roles like dps to be available to each with different flavours. I also wanted to implement identities, basically buffs to your playstyle that you can equip depending on the decisions in the game. But that would most likely end up being hyper delusional, so it will most likely not happen.
Id be surprised, if i finish the first chapter i have planned. But ill still spend 8 hours a day and just see where it takes me. Worst case theres always the rope ahaha.
>>567180494

Sure it's easy. Or maybe don't spend 100k to make the fucking game.
>>
>>567180880
gaming is so wide right now review score doesn't matter much, there are games on steam with a 99% positive score but if it's a game about cleaning a garage i would never buy it. I'm assuming this particular game is an idle game, which is why the play time is so high, which is another genre i would never buy.

Are there any British men who like the time period of 1650 to 1760? I have an idea for a game, but I'm just an idea guy, unfortunately. >Did you miss the part where the game made 35k? It's not gonna make back the costs ever.
My post was not about that. I quoted >>567179423 and that post talks about dream profits being hilarious. They were not, as explained in my post.
I don't know what that game is, and if those 100k were well used or not. That's a whole other topic we could talk about.
As an outside pov, if you wanna invest 100k in a game you must aim to make double in profits. As a median revenue on steam, you get 30k for every 100 reviews. That's the basic math.
If you wanna make dev a job, that's very useful info.

Yeah think about how rare getting 1k reviews is (only 2% of games on steam reach that) then realize that 1k reviews isn't even "make it" money unless you're in the third world. Its just enough to survive for a few years after valve's cut and taxes.

no not for any of the art, maybe for concept art i have privately but no assets. most people probably won't believe me when i say it but i am a professional 3d artist working at a big game studio so i can already do art fine myself. ai is not good enough yet but it's fun to use as a toy for quickly generating concepts much faster than it takes to draw them and for making porn

minecraft
vintage story
voices of the void

and so on and so forth. nice attempt at arguing in bad faith however. or let me guess, these games all "don't count"?

making money selling PC games outside of stores like Steam (GOG and Epic aren't much better) isn't impossible but it's a lot harder and has its own costs and downsides. it's why almost every game is sold on Steam, even games published by companies who have their own stores
>>
>>567187242
this is a far more reasonable (and realistic) take but that's not what steam fanatics and shills believe, they think that it's quite literally impossible to sell games outside of steam and that there is zero benefit to do so.
>>
>>567187447
When people say that, it's implicit short hand for: it's pretty much impossible to have any chance at a reasonable career (making livable money) not on steam.
Yes, we know we can sell 5-10 copies on itch, that would be cool if we were still 14.
>>
>>567187773
>it's pretty much impossible to have any chance at a reasonable career (making livable money) not on steam.
from numerous examples posted on /agdg/, with one posted in this very thread, it's impossible on steam too. not sure where you're going with that one.
>Yes, we know we can sell 5-10 copies on itch
i mean yeah that's what happens when you don't market your game at all and just dump it on a store.
what, you think that selling only 5-10 copies doesn't happen on steam?

for someone saying others post "nothing worth reading", you haven't posted any arguments as to why this is the case. you only said that games sell nothing on itch.io whilst ignoring the ones that do sell a lot. you've just straight up ignored my point about marketing (which will work regardless if you're on steam or not) and instead just began dogmatically claiming that steam is the correct choice. stop arguing in bad faith, or as you put it, "stop posting drivel".

Do you understand the concept of "self-evident"? As in, standards are standards for reasons you shouldn't have to tediously explain to an autist?
Steam is standard became it's the place with the most amount of people willing to spend money on games.
itch isn't standard because it's mostly a place for devs to dump shovelware, and the greater populace who like video games barely use it.
But sure, go become a professional itch dev and prove me wrong, i sincerely welcome it.

does that automatically mean it's objectively without faults and the best? youtube is the platform where everybody goes to watch non-shortform content but that doesn't mean it's free of any faults. the argument started with the fact that valve takes way too much money from devs and how devs don't stand up to that at all, and you went for whataboutism in regards to other stores.
if steam is standard because it's the place where everyone goes to, you don't think they have a responsibility to treat developers just a bit better, especially when they provide such an enormous share of profit for them? the devs do jack shit to defend themselves and just let a big corporation walk right over them, and you're acting as if this is fine?

for me it's not just the 30% cut that's a problem but the 10% they pay for VAT at your expense.
the numbers are from this video posted here >>567179423
according to the data, only 60 people refunded his game. at full price of that game, that's 1200 dollars max (it may have been lower due to sales but let's assume the highest number)
but the difference between the gross (35k) and net (30k) is 5000. so that leaves 4800 dollars that disappeared somewhere, according to valve they paid VAT with that.
that's 10% of your revenue that valve eats BEFORE THEIR 30% CUT. this is fucking insane. why the fuck is nobody talking about this???

so why isn't the 30% cut adjusted to reflect that? why is it not 20% to account for the 10% that go to VAT that valve pays at your expense?
because otherwise this means that valve's cut is not 30%, it's 40% (or even 50% in some cases) but if you were honest about the cut on steam, many unwanted questions would begin to arise, now wouldn't they, jeet?

valve will market your game actually, but only when you hit a basic anti-shovelware threshold. And if you have big returns, they'll market your game more and more to keep the money going.
>>

I don't know what to tell ya. The current Steam-meta is not sustainable. Either changes happen, some alternatives become more viable, or we are headed for collapse. No cap. Some have their head deep in the sand honestly.

it's literally more money for them, so they do. Once you hit thresholds, they start offering you more spots, discovery queues and invites to steam events.
The reason you always see successful games push out updates forever instead of the dev making new games is because Steam heavily favors momentum-based games with strong sales and word of mouth.

>The reason you always see successful games push out updates forever instead of the dev making new games is because Steam heavily favors momentum-based games with strong sales and word of mouth.
do you not see the problem with the way this works? if the games that get the most visibility are games that already released ages ago and just have infinite updates being pushed out, this erodes consumer awareness and desire for new games, effectively cannibalizing any new dev on the platform. why should you release your game on steam, if by your own admission, valve only promotes already well-established games that already make them millions in fees? that sounds like a ponzi scheme to me.

I played cookie clicker for a little while years ago, but otherwise no idle or incremental games.
Scritchy Scratchy is actually pretty fun. The main thing I noticed was that the music perfectly escalates as you go through different phases of the game. And the pacing of upgrades is such that you're never bored.

I agree with that but this >>567195593
>You're not competing with AAA titles and the throughput of these games getting released remains largely unchanged and would only shift depending on more AAA studios getting formed (which do not) and not by the user count increasing.
is just a nonsense statement because it implies that amount of yearly successes on Steam hasn't gone up because no new AAA studios are getting formed. We get new indie hits every year from new creators so that can't be the limiting factor. Either it's that quality devs are exiting the industry at about the same pace as new quality devs enter or that there's something wrong about Steam in the way that it's limiting exposure to roughly a fixed amount of new games every year.

It fully makes sense to me that the amount of shovelware is growing but I'd still expect the amount of games that do well also grow even if at a lesser pace. If Steam user base keeps increasing and spending should be going up with it why aren't there more games succeeding every year? That's a bit strange to me.

Currently driving myself insane trying to figure out how I can depict adaptive elevation contours on a hex map. Latest bright idea is to include settable elevation points in the map editor at every hex center and edge midpoint, then generate line segments based on how those values map out. Pic related is scratch paper where I'm trying to figure out how everything should look in my 2d war game, aiming for very crude 80s computer graphics
>>
>>567204128
this thing obviously want to die
>>
>>567204712
Don't hand-place center+edge midpoint spaghetti unless you want editor pain; make it a scalar field and run marching triangles. Hex centers already form a triangular lattice, so store one elevation per hex, then for each junction of 3 touching hexes make a triangle from their centers, pick contour levels like 1/2/3/4, and where a level crosses two triangle edges, draw that segment. If you need more local control, add vertex samples later, but start with center heights only because it's dead simple and continuous across hexes. Quantize the segment endpoints to a few pixels and clamp the line direction to your 6 hex-ish angles so it keeps that crude 80s CGA/TRS-80 map vibe instead of looking like smooth GIS output. For gameplay, keep contours cosmetic and derive movement/LOS from the actual hex elevation integer, otherwise players will chimp out when the drawn line and the rules disagree.

has anyone ever managed to get rid of a negative review from a "curator" who reviewed the game on a personal account?
2 years ago I sent a few copies through steam curators, when the game was only 30% done and a russian guy posted a negative review in russian from his account instead of the curator account
I just sent a reply asking him to replay the game but I bet he won't care since he mass reviews games he gets for free
it doesn't count for the overall score but it bothers me that I have 100% positives from buyers and then this one, and the game doesn't even have Russian translation

Getting this to VP8 under 4MB kind of makes it so you can't see the tool in the IDE, but can still see the maps being generated.

Took the idea from this repository: https://github.com/audinowho/RogueElements

I have a MapGenerator that takes a MapContext and runs MapSteps on it. The map steps are shown one by one in the video but can be combined. The steps I have so far:

init step - just makes a grid with walls
room step - places individual rooms
bsp step - uses binary split partitioning to make a map
directional step - caves that can be horizonal or vertical
drunkards step - uses drunkards walk to make a map
cellular automata step - uses cellular automata to make a map
terrain noise step - perlin or simplex noise to make terrain maps
directed graph - uses directed graphs and MST's to make a dungeon, has it's own propagation that doesn't play well with the other methods (yet).

I still need to implement Voronoi and a few other algorithms. If anybody has any they like and want to share I'd really like to get a lot of options into this for level generation.

Yes, these are all different techniques for procedurally generating different types of maps. It can be used for lots of stuff though. Voronoi can be used to make glass shattering effects, Perlin noise is good for wood-grain textures etc. Lots of possibilities with procgen.

Most of my professional career I was able to incorporate some of these concepts but never for anything fun. Felt it was time to learn a game engine and do these things in a way that brings me joy.

And now, that's running inference on the trained model. Works pretty good actually, maybe I don't need to switch to DEP-RL after all. I might need to increase the penalty for extra muscle activation, but I think that might be mostly oscillating on the passive springs components, so maybe I gotta buff the stillness reward instead. Good enough to try training another skill and then think about skill composition either way.

For better or worse, having mass appeal means you need to take the oatmeal approach to your assets. bright, bubbly, clean, low-poly, smooth, etc. You have a lot of "texture" that looks cool but will make those people turn because they want the boxy line art.

Didn't he release a game last year
>>

I wouldn't know. It's not on steam.

well yeah
most of that stuff in the pic is not intended to be in the game. its all experiments as i said
but I think stuff like the lower right pumpkin, the flowers, and the ground could be kept & homogenized into one style

>You have a lot of "texture" that looks cool but will make those people turn because they want the boxy line art.
I think texture on sprites is the next big thing but actually doing it is really hard. seems to walk a very thin line.

what an odd thing to say

Idk. I have seen him post a thousand times here in the past year and never once was it of a game. He literally doesn't post or talk about games anymore. He needs to be put in a retirement home and unplugged from the internet.

this image has a lot more going for it. Could really just have been the overall color scheme of the other picture throwing me off. Big fan of the teapot and what I'm guessing is a vase.
>>
>>567223987
Yeah don't do that. I already saw a couple games from here that I think looked good flop.

Wasteland Bites and Nuns and Guns won with achievable art styles, sensible. Gamey. Not trying to make something beautiful. Gameplay first.

kino gameplay thoughbeit

they're paid to defend steam per post so they have to keep coming here every day to earn for food

Yes, ALWAYS start with an MVP/prototype that implements the core of your idea. Everything else is secondary.

I wish I was paid to post here... why is that a bad thing?

oh nice, I knew about an xbox emulator called xemu, I never tried it thobeit
>>
>>567225769
i think it's a pretty fresh/new approach but the idea one guy can figure it out over a few months is insane
which is why i should probably settle on one approach towards it and scale that out to a short project, release, then repeat
hopefully the rest will work itself out during development

She's old alright, old piece of software. been tested and tried. Golden oldie. Maintenance mode, bugfix only, they've moved on to SDL3 but we still like SDL2.

i was thinking of having a lot of shaders going on while the game runs, just random stuff to animate it like having waves that are upscaled so they look like pixel art but fluid. that kinda stuff

Dating myself, but this reminds me of some of the artists that contributed to Sesame St. in the late 80's and early 90's. If you haven't heard of them and are looking for some source material for inspiration, check out people like Vince Collins, Ishu Patel, or Lesley Keen.

By the way RETARD, you've spent literally everyday in here all day doing what? Crying about steamies and gabe, spamming AI... how many games have you made?
How many will you ever make?

Zero.
Less than zero.
You amount to nothing. And that is
literally
all you will

You will
literally

never

make a game.

Big jams are tough these days with so many entries being scammed... devs just take finished games they haven't relased yet and and tweak them. Take a channel with this many viewers and you are competing with hundreds of fake entries.
>>
maybe instead of arguing you guys should team up and make a game together
>>
>>567229571
>implying there is an argument

They cannot.
Will not.
Ever.

make a game and they know it. And for that, you will see them post the exact same thing everyday for the next 10 years. It's your fault after all, not theirs. It's gabes fault too actually.

>>567229851
I blame women. People in here need to have sex

Honestly how dare you even attempt to make games when a retard can't. You deserve to be punished.

It's pretty common to blame anything and everyone around you or in the past for your current self and lack of ability. These people are so incredibly worthless.
>>
>with just $175 you can make the next MOTORSLICE

Well? What's your excuse?
>>
>>567230948
I know. It's a relief though. I don't actually want everyone to be capable of doing what I do. Fuck'em.

But that's the thing, they aren't willing to admit that they aren't capable. This is why they're capable of shitting up a general thread for 5 years and not make a game and justify it. They WOULD be a gamedev but boomers ruined it, steam ruined it, etc. and everyone needs to hear them cry about it. They're making a change by crying to us on 4chan about gabe and steam. That's practically as good as making a game, in fact it's better, because gamedev isn't even a noble pursuit. They actually think like this.

Those are jeet things (in their cope mind). Trying to succeed in life or have any success, wanting to work? That's jeet hustle culture to them. Making games to sell on steam? Absolute pajeet indian from india tier. This is how deranged the mind of a permanent failure neverdev is.

Back in my day our autistic argument about making fun of people for using godot or enginerdevs, and no one gave a shit about the unreal devs.. Except that one time when unity tried to retroactively charge you per download and all the unity devs got real salty revealing that they couldnt take the bants they had been dishing out because they are all babies. Ah good time..
