I have no proof, but an autistic force is telling me that remakes of Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 are in active development. They'll be packaged together and share mechanics between games. To really sweeten the deal, they'll also have fun new bonus missions where characters specific to one game are playable in the other. Like, Rouge will be playable in Knuckles' SA1 levels, Gamma will be playable during the Tails/Eggman levels in SA2. and they'll make new levels specifically for Big and Amy in SA2.

Knuckles is just a fundamentally confused character. He was made as a friend to Sonic but they forced him into being a "rival". They didn't even want him to be playable first but then they did. The result is a character that had to have an excuse to oppose Sonic, so they came up with him being tricked.In practice, he was never really a rival to Sonic. He was just tricked. But the "idea" of Knuckles as Sonic's rival is coveted by fans for some reason.To make him thematically contrast Sonic, they made him stay in one place...even though they expected him to be a friend to Sonic. How do you make him be a friend and ally to a guy that is always on the move? And make him oppose Sonic while doing that?So he kept being tricked over and over.Sonic Adventure comes along and its all about the echidna lore from the Sonic 3&K manuals but Knuckles doesn't meaningfully contend with any of it. And he ends the game basically saying its for the best he doesn't know, at least things the way they are aren't complicated. We have story and dialog with them in things like the comics. I don't see having story as something inherent to the nature of Modern or being in a 3D game.
