Looks like I wrote it as the thread was ending
Not sure if this is the right place, I want to start a passion project, I've got this idea for a video game but the thing is that I grew up playing Roblox when it was safe, these days all of Roblox is plagued with MTX and a bunch of systems that I have no idea if they're reused code or not but in any case I wanted to make something simple and fun, has anybody tried Roblox studio?
Sorry for the repost
>>
>>568170387
Just bite the bullet and learn unity you'll thank yourself later
>>
>>568170425
I have done Unity before but I want to make something that is easily accessible, I want to make a free game on a platform that has a lot of players so that's why I chose Roblox for it because I also had fun in it back when it was just random games you'd play for 2 hours instead of joining an IRL cult
>>
>>568167858
depends from person to person. me for example i end up struggling on the "what am i supposed to do next?" part even when i have clear outlines of what i am supposed to do. it's like i'm being indecisive about some choice so i kinda just don't do anything while i stay undecided on how to design whatever it is i am supposed to be working on. i guess that counts as game design? i mean i've got a drawing on my phone that covers the general idea of my game and i've got it partially set up yet it feels like i get stuck on random nuances ie the lighting and how i want it working.

as for your game. mmm balancing is a hassle. but art/animations maybe if you want a certain minimum quality level that you're unable to achieve. if you can achieve it then maybe the level design. getting a good looking level is hard and i don't mean the art. if you don't have sound and music then thats another hard one, assuming you can't make it yourself, then finding stuff that just fits feels hard or perhaps that's just a me problem.
>>
>>568170387
I'm too unc and chopped, so never interacted with roblox. Have you looked at S&box? similar, but you'll be able to release standalone games using it too

I really wish I had somewhere to post my progress in, however I still haven't started a social media account for the game, and feel like if I start posting it here it will bite me in the ass whenever I release, as someone can easily pretend to be anyone in here and frame you for being a pedo, racist, antisemitic and would find some way to get my game removed from Steam. There's just too many vindictive/jealous schizos in here who have way too much free time.

Am I overthinking things?
I yearn for an actual game dev community, but the only other ones out there are filled with trannies, or have some other cringe aspects to them.

Henlo fren. I think for the time being Roblox would be fine for you at least it feels like you'd have an easier time finding an audience even if it's a small audience at that. Whereas something like Unity you're pretty much up to the whims of randoms willingness to play it and if it's web browser capable you're better off cause some people will not download it.

Certain engines give you better luck ie
>Pico8
Imo it looks good for tiny games with an extremely limited artstyle and browser compatible seems to be built in so as long as you post it on the pico8 site and maybe itch you'll probably get an audience. Just very limited on the type of game
>RPG Maker
By far the most active community I've seen so it shouldn't be too hard to just be a little bit active on their forum and then one day post a link of your game and get easy plays out of them.
>Roblox
Due to the design it's easy to get many people just churning into your game out of the slightest bit of curiosity.

As for coding idk the difficulties on any of them but I have read RPG Maker is a hassle to work with. So if this is the only community you are in and post it in demo days (like once every 2 months and on itch.io) then you better hope your game is of very good quality to draw a crowd from outside /agdg/ or the amount of people playing will be low. Personally I think you should just use Roblox Studio no need to go min maxxing your choice for future potential only for you to end up making 1 game, getting your fill, and never making another.
>>
>>568171996
Hey fren, I think Roblox is probably your best bet for now since it seems like you'll find it easier to attract even a small audience, whereas with Unity you're more at the mercy of whether people are willing to try out your game and if it's web browser compatible, which is a big plus since many won't bother to download. Certain engines tend to give better chances, like Pico8, which is great for tiny, pixel art-style games that run in the browser, making it easier to share on their site or itch.io and gain some visibility, though it's quite limited in scope. RPG Maker also has a very active community, so if you stay active on their forums and share your game, you'll likely get some plays without too much hassle. Roblox, on the other hand, makes it easy to attract curiosity-driven players due to its design, so you can get a lot of traffic quickly. As for coding, I’m not sure how hard any of these are, but RPG Maker is known to be somewhat tricky, and if it's the only community you're posting in, you’ll need to make sure your game is pretty polished to draw in players from outside, or the audience will stay small. Personally, I think sticking with Roblox Studio is the simpler choice, especially since you’re not looking to maximize future potential but rather to make a game, enjoy the process, and maybe move on after that—no need to overthink it.
>>
>>568171703
nobody has ever had any ramifications like that for simply posting their game here. people might pretend to be you here, but there would be no proof it's you, so no way you'd get anything removed from steam.

You know what, Cris? You really do make me feel bad for you sometimes, not because you're completely off base all the time, but because you're actually quite competent for 80% of things. Your problem is that you're extremely foolish for the remaining 20%, and that just kills your ability to produce anything of value. The worst part is that you inject your 20% foolishness into everything that you do, and so you end up not actually good enough at any one skill. I often see my younger self in you, except you're actually older than me. e.g. I also made a similar procedural music tool about a decade ago.

I think its a good game and I loved the first one; but theres still a lot of drama from angry players wanting more solutions to monsters than just swimming away.

The devs just dismiss it as violence is bad and games need less violence; but violence is good humans need to fight and kill things that will kill them otherwise. You cannot reason with demons and you're causing more harm trying to spread anti-violence messages that will get entire populations of people if followed KILLED with them becoming cucks.

That’s a coherent satirical design philosophy, and a lot of games already lean surprisingly close to it. It echoes critiques of how violence functions as the “default verb” in mainstream game design: movement exists to reach violence, progression exists to enhance violence, and narrative exists to justify or dramatize violence.

A few games and creators have explored versions of this idea:

DOOM turns nearly every mechanic into momentum toward combat.
Hotline Miami strips interaction down to rapid cycles of stylized brutality and aftermath.
God of War III frequently uses cutscenes to depict violence too elaborate or cinematic for direct player control.
Spec Ops: The Line uses constant violence to criticize the player’s growing desensitization to it.

Your phrasing about cutscenes depicting violence “which can’t be accurately represented in gameplay” points at an interesting tension: games often reserve their most emotionally complex or physically detailed violence for non-interactive scenes because gameplay systems simplify actions into repeatable mechanics. A sword strike in gameplay may be a damage calculation; in a cutscene it can become choreography, spectacle, horror, or tragedy.

There’s also an implicit argument here about honesty in design:

If combat is the core activity, why pretend otherwise with filler?
Why include crafting, fetch quests, dialogue trees, or traversal unless they meaningfully transform the violence?
Why not admit the game is fundamentally about domination, destruction, survival, or conflict?

Violence in games often becomes more impactful because it’s framed by quieter moments. Even highly combat-focused games rely on anticipation, recovery, exploration, or reflection to make the action register psychologically.

As a manifesto, though, it’s sharp. It sounds like something between a design doctrine and a parody of blockbuster game trends.

I struggled with the theme of no violence for more than 5 years.

I eventually learned to use a timer to create tension and a game over, and turn the game towards collecting, speedrunning, gathering, finding hidden tokens, gaining territory as main alternatives to combat.

Ironically, I think such style of combat is closer to a female type of combat, which reminds me more of picking tomatoes or coffee under a time limit rather than the more male traditional combat style.

Pretty sure you could make a procedural dungeon where there are wild berries or bushes and there's a day and night system as timer, until there's a certain time pass, like a month to provide a game end.

i have a theory that the ad revenue crunch on video platforms led to the mass uptick in "content creators" joining "talent labels", whose main purpose is to launder advertising money so that it wont be labeled as an #ad.... the direct result being that these label lepers no longer organically/independently discover what they play, instead they use a shortlist handed to them by their labels made up of games who have given the label an advertising budget to pay out to their talent. And that this scheme has further had a knock-on effect to lepers not on labels just by virtue of them finding what to play from the label lepers as well as being algorithmically rewarded for jumping on the bandwagon that the label lepers seed..... i have no first hand experience though which is why it's a theory.... if anyone's used one of these label to push a game i'd love to hear a fuck-NDA explanation of what they're getting.

That's a possibility.

But I can't practical to everything. I can code faster than making art, so it's a compromise to move things forward.

Also models can be swapped later when the game is near complete and playable.

Blog post of no value below.
126 days left and the player can finally die. It's pretty late to be implementing that feature given how hard the game will try to kill the player pretty early on but I just never got around to it before. Death will be one of several game over states, the other being running out of money. It's like my life is seeping into the gameplay.
Otherwise I achieved very little yesterday. I decided it's time to implement player death and then I did it and then I kept "testing" it by dying over and over and that's how I spent 5 hours. Today I'll make a list and try to finish everything on it. I need to be more intentional and practice urgency. 126 days is not a lot of time.

flow is when repetition meets novelty. doing the same thing over and over and each time it's novel enough to be interesting.
i don't think difficulty is that important in flow, unless the difficulty is so low that it messes with novelty. and i think difficulty is more exclusive to flow in a competitive context, not in non-competitive activities.
without repetition you get stressed because you have to adapt from scratch over and over again. without novelty you get stressed because of boredom.
mining quartz in the nether is a nice example, cause the difficulty does not go up, you just gotta learn the basics until you are good to go, then it's basically the same every time, but proc gen etc. makes it slightly novel every time you go into the nether.

this is what i'd call optimal experience. and it'd explain why gamedev is so hard. because gamedev is not repetitive. it's 95% new things all the time. you gotta draw and draw all sorts of stuff instead of focusing on only drawing specific things. you gotta program tons of different things from pathfinding to shaders to ui to stat systems. you gotta animate all sorts of things.
it's just too much different stuff to create optimal experience.

at least that's a massive problem in solodev.

another problem is that ai will take over all those "optimal experience" jobs and you'll only be left with jobs that are complicated and multi-disciplinary as fuck. i think boomers solved that problem for themselves by creating a massive government and providing themselves with jobs that are frozen in time, because they just make a law to protect their jobs.

flow is when you no longer need to actively process inputs, just bypasses your cognition straight to reptile brain in a reflexive sort of manner. this frees you up to think about anything you want while still performing excellently. cognitive multitasking

i recently thought about fishing. and i think the whole point of fishing is the atmosphere. the frogs ribbiting, the wind blowing through the trees, the beautiful nature, animals passing by on the other side of the pond, seeing a fish swimming by close to you etc. etc.
if people really only wanted a fish, they'd just go buy one.
that's why turning fishing into an action game is not working, cause it's not an action thing, it's an atmosphere thing.

the crafting in my game is very flexible. anything can become anything else because under the hood it is ecs + blueprints (not the unreal things i mean something completely different). so a character can be turned into a sword, a door can become a character, a shield can be turned into a laser rifle. etc. of course i wont let players go that extreme in game, the UI will enforce limits that make logical sense but "underneath the UI" literally anything "could" happen if i wanted it to.
>>
>>568203165
i tested it with 200 (fake) players (connections that spawn characters and run around) and 5000 npcs in the open world along with about 5000 random pickups on the map and the server was able to run at 120 ticks per second even though the target for release is 30. so got plenty of overhead to believe "mass multiplayer" (Rust or Ark style meaning 200 players on a server) is possible.

In my case, I had the benefit of parents willing to wait around and accepting of whatever I do even if it's making no money making games with this idea that maybe some day it'll pay off.
... and it did. Give it some years and I now make more money than my parents ever did put together.

I don't know if they had faith in me as much as they just can't be bothered to parent anymore because I know someone is getting the same treatment but failing to make any money, but hey. All's well that ends well.

I was never living a lavish lifestyle. I would buy nothing, own nothing, my only means of transport is walking and occasionally a bus or train or bike. I would visit nobody, take no vacations, buy the 75% and 50% discounted food. The greatest luxury of all is having a place you can crash at while you grind, because no amount of penny pinching could preserve that. If you have that, you're all set.
Now I don't know what the fuck to do with my money. I've learned to never spend and now what the fuck is money even good for??

Do I stay in my home country? It's fucked, we have draconian laws and no future. Even if I did, where are the people I want to hang out with? Do I just rent houses all over the place until I find one? I already live in gamedev central but nobody fucking talks to each other here, it's lame as fuck

I still remember the days where I gave absolutely no shits about politics because none of it seemed to matter and it was completely uninteresting compared to the US
now it's a massive shitshow. You know the stories you've seen about the UK lately? They happened just down the street from the last place I lived.

It's not actually that terrible for gamedev because the taxes aren't as bad as the rest of the EU while still providing healthcare, though the healthcare is slipping (the local GP shut down, pharmacies are shutting down, you now need a car to get to these places whereas you could take a 5 minute walk to get to them before)
the best part is you can average your income over 2 years if you're a solodev. I've been able to use it to not have to pay tax for the first few years because I was technically within the 12,500 or so threshhold for no tax.

Rather slow progress. Couldnt find anything im happy with, so ill just stay with these character proportions and designs. Fixed and cleaned up multi tile characters. Added a healthbar for context that ill spawn when people are damaged, when the player wants to inspect the unit or display on some hotkey press. Once i have modifiers ill have to add logic for displaying them around the ring. Might have to change it to a normal bar if units consistently are too close to each other.
Also added generic movement that adds an exhaustion stack per use, making the move cost one more. Each interval the cost gets reduced by 0.2 as a placeholder. When no unit or attack is nearby i want it to be replaced by a move that can go farther and doesnt exhaust the unit i think. Still have to display the stacks in the information window. I think i should also add a combat interval count on the screen and display the length of a selected action besides it for feedback.
I think ill ignore the character animations for now and try to implement combat features and ui + ux until dd.

when making music i always noticed those stages:
a) i just start making something
b) its somewhat ok but could be better
c) i listen to other songs
d) i try to replicate the sound, but it doesnt work
e) get frustrated, also now i have only this one sound in mind and become close-minded to everything else
f) i listen to other music too, but become even more chaotic and confused
g) i quit

i wonder if this happens in gamedev too. you try to take a shortcut by just looking whats popular, yet it makes you close-minded, it makes you lose touch with yourself and your own ideas/experiments, and also it frustrates you because your stuff is not the same or as good as the others, because you directly compare stuff all the time to the reference.

Clearly you are if you think the Jewish banking system works in your favor. If you run a business in a country with no tax treaties, or if you live in a country that has explicit tax for non-domestic sources of income (like Americans making money outside of the US), then you are subject to double tax.
>>
>>568214519

answer the question retard
the business is located in ethiopia, the money never leaves ethiopia as far as anyone else knows, so why the fuck do you think you'd be paying taxes to germany or whatever?
this is why I don't talk to poor people
>>

have fun living in ethiopia because there will be warrant under your name for tax evasion in your original country
>>
>>568214735
I accept your concession.
>>
>>568214735
Also, not to mention, even if you were exempt from double taxation, the statement that you don't pay income tax is still false because you will still pay income tax in Ethiopia. Not only that, but for lower income brackets, Ethiopia has higher tax rate than any of the countries it has treaties with, at 35% compared to 20-30% range for any other country, meaning that your if you actually committed to your retarded plan, you'd pay a higher effective tax rate.
>>
>>568215259
During my steam tax interview it said 35% total
>>
I know you retards are trolling, but tax treaties are actually about preventing double taxation when you're earning money in both countries

LUCK that somehow a hidden gem was allowed to just sit there, unnoticed, likely because nobody wanted to point out that it's right there.

Not luck that someone decided to steal that free bar of gold. You would not call that luck, you would call that inevitability.

If you'd asked me the same thing a year ago then yes, I would go with the other argument
>okay, so it's not successful, why is it not successful?
which is pretty obvious if you look at it. It's a solo hobby project with graphics more like a "line graph" than "game graphics". The way everything spawns in is also incredibly janky and it gives the impression the game is just a meaningless sandbox, that unlike sandboxes like Minecraft, has no real permanence to it.
Compare to Lucid Blocks, which iirc only released a couple months ago and got instant success and is now standing at 2x as many reviews.

What I'm saying here is that something being successful doesn't mean it's a hidden gem.
Luck exists in gamedev in the opposite way to what was being implied earlier. Almost any game can get 'lucky' and get a cult following but if you chase this luck you're just admitting that you can't make a good game.
That's right. That's what I'm saying. Luck is an excuse for being a nodev who can't make a game that is guaranteed to succeed.

The language is very basic and easily embaddable, making it easy for anyone to pick up modding and to add support for modding.

I don't know, I kind of just started on it this evening, I just made some sort of a platformer sandbox (physics, lights, movement, spell system and some other crap). Kind of stupid autistic question:
For those of you who do hand-drawn assets, what is your process for exporting? Like do you draw with a white canvas and erase the background? Alpha layer and fill in with manual touchups?
I always find myself missing something. Some transparency in a character or background asset that shouldn't be there. Or a few stray color pixels outside the lines or seeping through the outlines' outer rim in the alpha/anti-aliasy areas.
I always feel like my methods are just retarded and caveman-esque.

I guess there are some advantages to waking up early. Yes 8 AM is too early, especially without coffee, god.

I'm not even 100% on what we have this month. April was such a blur with everything going on that I'm lucky I even remember my own name. Looks like we got a smattering of Star Wars, a drizzle of Kingdom Hearts, a heaping pile of all things Disney, and a sprinkle of some Mario content, among all the other submissions we have this month. Great job as always, guys; you continue to make this site amazing, and keep me on my toes.

This month's advice: beware of erroneous headers in your WAV files! Sometimes conversion tools like to sneak in headers that don't jive with this site, leading to files not being able to be played in our browser player. A good way to check for this is to make use of Dazz's Audio Analyzer under The Spriter's Toolkit! If your WAV file has a header it shouldn't have, it will kick back an error letting you know. Usually this can be wiped out by running the files through Foobar2000 converter, but not always! So be sure to run the files through the Audio Analyzer again just to be sure!

That's all from me this month. Remember to love yourselves as much as you love others, and I'll see you all next month.

A gamedev I was talking to in-person said he had a streak in the thousands.
Same result. Seemed he didn't learn a lot.

Personally, it helped me a lot when I went to Sweden. I've been before but never learned any Swedish but with duolingo I actually came out knowing a lot words. Definitely can't make sense of conversations but I can understand bits and pieces, or translate individual food items on a menu or in the shop.
I think its value just drops dramatically if you aren't actually using the knowledge. This applies to everything, including learning gamedev.

There is no point to following a tutorial if you don't put it into practice.

Feels like I'm playing a kid's game.
You eventually reach a certain point in life in which even tho you like playing games, whenever you start playing a game that thought in your mind starts raping you: "I'm wasting my time, I'm going to die, I should be doing something else".

The most the game feels like a kid's game the higher the chance this thought will invade your mind faster.
I think this is the reason why ragebait games (Souls likes), friend slop, roguelikes, or idle/mind numbing games are currently popular.
All of them either abuse the dopamine system by making you feel extreme ecstasy by making the reward/punishment cycle extreme (souls likes), lie to you by making you feel like you are doing something productive like hanging out with friends (friendslop), or a mix between gambling and letting you play while doing something else like listen to a podcast/news/youtube or even "working" and let you pretend you are being productive (idle, roguelikes, mind numbing games).
Even things like "farming simulator, restaurant simulator, prison simulator, gay uncle who enters into your room in the middle of the night simulator" let you pretend like you are doing something productive, which makes the little voice in your head that reminds you that you are going to die soon go away for a while.
Platformers just remind you of your mortality and the futility of raging against the dying of the light, Metroidvanias at least let you larp for a while.

I'm mostly done migrating from 2d to 3d. made some basic geometric shapes for meshes so I can go back to writing code. need add an extra dimension to the map fog, even though the game will be top-down grid movement. Thankfully, systems are decoupled from visuals so all of the mechanics still work.

I really like writing systems, I don't like doing visuals and art. hopefully not shooting myself in the foot too much making placeholders and calling it a day. Somewhere down the line I'll be forced to spend my time on visuals, or maybe I can find somebody who enjoys that stuff that wants to work on a roguelike

Pretty good post, the metroidvania I believe falls a bit under the souls and idle game tricks where you are "making progress" and getting new abilities to complete tasks that were previously out of reach.
It's hard to forget that games are time wasting toys when you're playing something gay, transcoded and retarded.

Metroidvanias are currently the "it" thing for a lot of reasons, most importantly the one nobody wants to admit ; Godot has a whole fucking metroidvania toolkit

The problem is that any attempt to fake it without rigidbody collisions (and therefore forces) is going to make this wobbling behavior (which is the point of the mechanic) completely impossible to figure out
But with Unity physics, putting the force high enough to actually keep the surfaces together under any stress causes the solver to explode
I think I'll try doing it with joints again, manually correcting the force to make it more like a magnet than a spring, and if that doesn't work I give up and go back to WoW

My skills are extremely limited, but thanks. I'm trying to limit myself to GBC sprite color/palette limitations. I find working with these kinds of limits is actually both pretty fun AND it sort of makes you think things through more?
Looking at some sprite resources for inspiration could help too. Some of those GBC games really knew how to work with their limitations. I couldn't even hope to make some of that stuff.
Also I'd recommend Aseprite if you aren't already using it. Really darn good program.

you're not gonna be able to do that with only physics, you should fake the travel time and use spring joints or something for the actual backpack mechanic

>make rigid body kinematic
>pick start point
>pick end point based on current backpack layout and shape of item or whatever
>pick travel time T
>move from start point X to end point X based on time
>move from start point Y to end point Y with an arc computed at launch time
>make it follow the player by offsetting it by the same amount the player moves each frame, if you do it every FixedUpdate the rigidbody interpolation will make it smooth
>once T has elapsed, snap it to the end and make rigidbody dynamic

if you want it to follow the back of the mouse or whatever it is while it's running around then add a spring joint constraint that breaks under enough pressure BUT only once it reaches the destination

t.did something similar, i wrote some really simple ballistics code for a 2d follower creature that can jump towards you in a project I can't post here. also wrote my own suspension code for this car game

Eh its not that fast ahaha. The initial commit was around 10 months ago. I think i worked in total 6 months on it though? Most of the time spent is setting up serialization, the level and config editor, and slowly getting one feature done after the other. Ideally i can make a small vertical slice room with dialogue, combat, saving and most visual features i want at the end of the year. Getting the lighting and depth right took me by far the longest because of my trial and error approach.
