Since I've been refactoring stuff, I decided to go back and change a few things for the sake of it. The leiomano now causes bleed. I don't think any enemies have any sort of bleed resistance for now, so it's pretty dangerous. On the other hand, I gave bleed to a few other enemies as well. I also decided to make it so this tentacle guy's grab builds up dizzy on you. Because it's a build up over time as you're spun, if you can break out of the grab quicker, you're able to become less dizzy.

I hate to be that guy but the problem is your workflow. There isn't actually must wrong with your piece. You're getting myopic because you're looking too closely. In pixel art for any region of color you're basically only going to use 3 colors of different value between black and pure white.
What I would do it more or less restart but in a very fast way, pull out the silhouette and then block out the planes of light, consider edge light and light that will bounce back, if something is very round like a peak it's having a lot of gradient in light and the face closest to the light will often be bright for example hold out your thumb if you move it around from your eye you can see the apex of light moving along the surface, that's the light source which is fixed. Look at the sprite zoomed out, then for the blocked out silhouette fill back the colors.

I would say shift your hues, but I can see you're already sorta doing that, just make sure it's a conscious effort. Try not to just use multiply or darker values, always shift your hues for brighter/darker colors, it looks much more profound on pixel art.

Generally, I think black lines look better only when they're reserved for the outline of a character's silhouette (exterior lines only). The internal lines, you can play around with their colors a lot to mix and match them to the base colors of your character. But I like using blacks for the outlines because it gives it a very Konami game Super Nintendo main character look.

I did a quick sketch on ms paint of the game I want to make /agdg/. The idea is to have fixed camera angles in the general overworld, and free look camera, party based combat transitions with similar gameplay to FF7 Remake or Summoner 2 for the PS2, where you can pause the game and swap party members on the fly whilst still having an engaging action experience. It would also have a lot of text, cut scenes, multiple spells to be used inside and outside combat and a unique leveling/progression system. Would you consider this hard for an indie dev? If you could cut off some fat to make it more feasible, what would you change? Do you know of any good tutorials for these features (action game with multiple party members, fixed camera angles, possibly pre rendered backgrounds for the overworld) and what engine would you recommend? Happy worst of the month to fellow rentoids. I did a summary of my finances this morning and it was a mistake. I'm going to be distracted for the rest of the day.
119 days left. This won't be enough to get my game into a shippable state, I'm going to run out of money. The only thing I can do is work more time every day, but I can barely work the 5 hour quota as it is. Actually I can't even do that because I owe almost 20 hours.
Today I'll try to not think about any of that and do some writing and fix some bugs if I have the time.

This feels harder to me. The others were 128x128, this is 64x64. I am used to pencil on paper so trying to make good use of every dot is really hard.

Finally giving the dodge some actual iframes, but it's kinda tricky and attack dependent to use. Basically, for wide sweeps like these guys use, if you dodge away from the attack, you have iframes. You're going to have iframes when dodging sideways through things like projectiles and stabs. You won't have iframes for AoEs unless you do the super man dodge (dodge while sprinting, which makes you leap on the ground.) Getting the iframes is pretty tricky though. Here I've only got it a few times, shortly after the 45 second mark.

be careful using anime or superheroes as a reference. its not always bad but its definitely a pitfall
if youre going to make realistic human characters you might want to study fashion both how it has changes from culture to culture and era to era.
probably tons of tutorials out there but the better tips i've heard are:

Shape/Silhouette: you'll see this more in older western cartoons. you dont always need to be that dramatic but defining shapes help keep a character different from one another and help them standout. it can also help a character relate to another if thats what youre looking for

Palette: limit the amount of colors you use on one character. once again this help will separate(or relate) the character from the others when you have a larger cast.

Repeating patterns: anything from shapes to color to motifs and themes repeating through the design will help unify the different parts of a character. this doesnt mean you cant create contrasting elements. sometimes that can make the elements complimentary. like a character whos half fire half ice

Readability: how easy it is to make out a character for any given amount of time. this changes depending on the medium and genre. If youre game is fast paced you should have something a bit more simple or standout so as to be quickly understood(slave rats from vermintide). slower story games dont always need that and can relax the design more (gears or war). Though in games like call of duty where you usually just shoot at anybody who isnt your team, designs can also relax. just keep it in mind what your players will have to deal with

superhero comics do skin tight suits so that its easy to draw all the anatomy in the actions scenes that they are desired for, forcing them to rely on the color and patterns on the suit. cartoons usually work more with flat shapes as drawing high detail is a pain from frame to frame. video games are quite nice in that they often reuse assets instead of remake them

You can either render it into a downscaled texture or you can render it into a fullsized texture and have either a pass in your texture materials that checks if a pixel position (i choose the middle) is inside the light. Or you can do the same in a deferred pipeline. I calculate the light in my pixelgrid at the end and just overlay it. Although i abuse the shit out of unitys in built pipeline within the render graph and rendering stuff onto different textures with the lightmode tags. I mostly use unities shadow maps for that and have a low poly 3d representation on a different plane.

The game feels a lot better with bots filling the dungeon, although PvP is way to fast and deadly right now.

gemini is fine for idea spam but it’s the wrong shape of tool for final textures. don’t ask it “make seamless” and trust the output, force the seam yourself.

take your photo, crop the most boring useful square, then offset it 50% x/y so the edges meet in the middle. now use AI inpaint only on that cross seam, not the whole image. keep denoise low so it doesn’t hallucinate a new material. then tile it 3x3 and fix any obvious repeating rock/leaf/stain by inpainting those too. this gets you 80% there.

for actual game materials, use AI for albedo only, then derive height/normal/roughness after, or use Substance Sampler. its Make It Tile / tiling filters exist specifically for this and beat random chatbot image output most of the time. Photoshop Pattern Preview is also good because you can see the repeat live while painting/inpainting.

if you’re comfyui/sd-pilled, use a tiling workflow or latent tile node, generate at 1024+, then downscale. prompt like “flat scan, orthographic, no shadows, no perspective, uniform material, tileable texture” and negative prompt “object, horizon, lighting gradient, vignette, depth of field”. AI loves adding composition; textures need anti-composition.
