More like some folk with a chip on their shoulder and a vendetta against gsg for whatever reason turned the general to utter shit, like over 90% of posts now are obvious low effort offtopic bot spam. I still recall a few years back when it wasnt utter shit and still hosted on /vg/, it was constantly under raid by these same twats, with citing "X isnt a grand starategy" one of their most common bait rethorics. Its most likely because the general was an hotspot for historically knowledgeable autists who would tell you whats what instead of giving you a politically correct reinterpretation of things (ie would tell you exactly what weimar germany was like before the nazi came around, instead of kneejerking the taboo subject away), which obviously rubbed some folks the wrong way.

Pretty much all of them are necessary. If you have to ask this question you should either be a) pirate and just buy random DLC according to how much you want to tip paradox or even better buy extra copies and give them to your friends or something or b) use the subscription when ever you feel like playing.

Do you have any idea what that would cost? Not that anon but even buying all stellaris's dlc for yourself is expensive.
>>
>>570956442
Currently stellaris goes for 15 deutche marks on steam. The ultimate bundle goes for 140 marks, that's little over 9 full games you could shell out with the price. So for the exact same tip you could have the full game yourself or you could have the full game and share the game with 9 of your friends.

Sorry to bring up a youtuber but in a play through he did recently Potato McWhiskey spent a bunch of time talking about why he thinks farms are overrated if not bad for your empire in 6, since turbo growing your pops ends up causing you to hit the housing cap and not only making that food worth less, but also causing you to need more amenities and dropping all your yields from losing happy or ecstatic city status.

6 is the one I never really learned/got good at and I'm thinking about changing that soon, but yeah that sounds right. Hitting the housing cap in 6 is basically like hitting the happiness cap in 4 and 3 and you only wanna tolerate it if you can whip the excess away with slavery in 4

Age of Empires 4 is a bit underrated.
I do appreciate that you can pick a tileset independantly from the map's layout. This is the map "dungeon" with the fancy "enchanted grove" tileset.

>Are you saying you can make the map generate as a fairy woodland?
Yes, but it's only cosmetic. I think I explained wrong, so let me restart.

What you are referring to is a game mode. AoE4 has a few of them, you know them: sandbox, nomads, fast start, but also monster hunt, and the one you mentioned, the Full Moon mode.
Then there are different maps, who are layouts. They're essentially the maps you know from AoE2: black forest, arena, fortress, araby and what else. I like the one called "dungeon" because it's a bunch of high mountains acting like walls to separate the map into rooms.
THEN you have what I call tilesets, which might be the wrong word. It's just cosmetic stuff, and it influence the trees, the terrain and the animals you meet, but it's just cosmetic, and every DLC add some of these. You get the usual ones: European, Mediterranean, Winter, Taiga, and with DLCs, you get the Yellow River, the "enchanted grove", and the "hallow's end" one who has dead trees and a spooky atmosphere.

>What civs do we have fighting here
I was attacking Malians with a DLC faction based on the vanilla Byzantine faction, called Macedonian Dynasty.
AoE4 seem to follow a pattern where most DLC factions are subfactions of existing factions: the French get Joan of Ark, the Holy Roman Empire get the Dragon Order, and Byzance gets the Macedonian Dynasty.
And why play the Macedonians? Because they use the terrifying Varangian Guards. They start with lame spearmen to counter scout rushes, but then they get the actual Varangian swordsmen. And they're hilarious: they have a skill where they put the sword and shield away, pull a giant two-handed axe, and come rushing the poor hapless enemy.

I always made a big deal to grab the empire size pop reduction bonuses everywhere, even the tradition trees that only give -5%
With nomads it feels less useful. My sacred path megacorp got FUCKED by colony empire size with building ark ship 2 and 3, and it was a near Dark Age with pitiful tech progress until I reached the point my priest specialists generated decent research in the origin chain
That and getting the tech that lets way lines automate resources trivialized everything. Now I outpaced the galaxy

Good lord that was a tough one. It was a 2v2, but my ally sat on his hands for most of the game, and I ended up fighting both Mordor and Gondor at the same time.
Which could've been manageable if Gondor didn't spam cavalry while Mordor spammed battering ram: whenever I rolled out a catapult, Gondor was here to destroy it, and whenever I left my base, Mordor's battering rams were here to attack my buildings. I was forced on the defensive for most of the game and only slowly chipped away at the AI, all of that because the AI cannot adapt to harassment and has trouble rebuilding lost buildings: once it loses the fortress, it's very hard for it to rebuild it, since it prioritizes making more troops.
Also I love the banter if the Master of Laketown dies.
"The Master is dead! He won't be missed, I suppose."
Also the Master died against a dragon, so... at least he died bravely.

Pretty sure empire size is only a real problem if you expand too quickly without ensuring you have the infrastructure to support it all, or go out of your way to specialize your capital word for one specific purpose ie disregarding unity for science so you can upgrade shit quickly but have abysmal unity prod for a long time as the wait time become way longer over time, even if you stay a small empire. Basically its meant to prevent snowballing early game, not that it is truly preventable since stellaris is at its core a number game so its just about outproducing the demand and using the excesses to support other parts of your economy or society.

Like the incremental augmentations are barely felt if you build stuff with long term viability in mind.

You could claim and conquer the state with the claims on your land, annex only their planet systems (and a path between) to save time, then create a new sector out of the new territory only to release it as a vassal immediately, and perhaps even just release them fully with a promise of sovereingty, or just abandon them to their fate. The advantages are numerous; You get a loyal new vassal or ally or buffer who will manage the territory for you and have the same government types, making good relationships easy, while stripping the claims from your systems (as the nation ceased to exist) and removing all titular rights from the stations in unclaimed systems. So basically it become free real estate, so either let the ai expand or do so yourself with little opposition but be quick as the ai will jump on the opportunity to expand.

>>571157762
>Basically its meant to prevent snowballing early game
It's there to make sure an empire twice as big doesn't just research at twice the speed and just completely overrun the game in favor of mindless blobbing. Basically it's there to enable "tall" and to ensure that efficient and well managed empires stay relevant to mindless but large empires. Empires that are bigger already have a linear advantage in production they don't need a linear advantage in advancing in tech and unity trees to keep up. It actually matters the least in the early game because there's a minimum empire size and the first few things you expand to are "free" and the first few after the "free" are "cheap" because going from say 4 to 5 planets is +20% but it may increase your empire size by only 10% due to aforementioned base values.

Even with that though increasing the size of your empire so long as you maintain the same efficiency means you do everything better than you did. So long as you maintain the same research/unity per pop doubling your pops is always going to lead to faster overall progress in those categories and linear increase in material production so bigger is in fact always better. Of course it can be hard to maintain that but that's the challenge of the game.

how's AOW4? I want to try a new 4x game and it looked interesting. Any dlc worth getting?
>>
>>571217104
Perhaps you had initiated it while under a research agreement with them, shifted the research focus to something else afterward, then between the then and now that specific nation ceased to exist for whatever reasons. So it could explain why you're still getting the bonus despite no longer working with them, like the research amount required already got calculated and the game dont refresh these values and/or retroactively scale them up.
>>
>>571200550
what game
>>
>>571222991
AoW4 is really good including most of the DLC. It's a 4x game that really focuses on waging war being as fun as possible, while also making permanent allies and allied victories good in a way I haven't seen any other 4x do as well. I love being able to take over and declare victory with my buddy without having to like build the UN and achieve a certain situation or whatever first. One of the unique things about it is that everyone starts out with a unique tech tree in early and mid game, but in the late game different players can start to resemble each other a little more. Interacting with the neutral elements on the map is really fun and a game unto itself, much more interesting than the barbs and city-states in Civ, for example. Managing citizens/city improvements is very simplified and there's not much minmaxxing you can do, which frees you up to focus on interacting with the neutral factions and the warfare and stuff. Also, it's the only 4x game that has done story/campaign scenarios in a way that I like. Because they're randomly generated like normal random 4x maps, but wiht weird parameters that make them go a certain way. The games in FAR fewer turns than most 4x games, but a huge amount of development happens per turn compared to most games so they often don't feel that short. The difficulty/AI is pretty good, but you have to adjust for how much you want to play out the combats manually. If you play them manually, you will be stronger, so you'll want higher difficulty. Lower difficulty lets you automate combat more.
