There's a macguffin quest but there's no more big progression checks gating off areas aside from the final dungeon(s).It's pretty funny in games like FF3 and DQ5 though, where you get several boats/airships because some suck shit and some suck marginally less. Appreciate DQ5's final travel method being a giant flying castle though.
